Talk:Ocean View Card Room

From PokerWiki

Wow, I just discovered this site. I didn't expect to find my stomping grounds here.

I added some stuff. I could say a lot more about this room, but I'll leave it be for now.

I'm not sure I agree about the "friendliness" though. Things got ugly the other night! Old Billy came this close to sawing somebody's head off with the Chris Ferguson card-throwing trick.

Friendly? Maybe. At best it's entertaining when the usual hotheads like Billy, Buzz, and the rest of the Convalescent Crew lose their marbles and yell at dealers at the top of their lungs with spit flying. It's just not good for the game. Turns a fun table where the players are happy and playing loose with their chips into a quiet slow tight table. The management here puts up with behavior like this routinely, especially from their old regulars, maybe because they are regulars. But in the long run, new players (and there are a lot coming in the doors) and their money will head up to Garden City or to Marina Club for a better game. Poor business decisions like this along with often times not having available dealers when there is a long list and empty tables begs the question of this cardroom ever improving to meet the demand of a large population of poker players in Santa Cruz and more mentally stable ones at that.

The good news is: at least no one has gone so far as to piss on a dealer's leg here yet.

I Recommend bringing an ipod or earplugs and a lot of patience.

There are lots of poker players in Santa Cruz. Whoever wrote "The Ocean View is the sole living heir of a town with a once-thriving poker scene." almost got it right. Santa Cruz still has a poker scene, it's just not thriving at the Ocean View. College games, home games, and commuting to other rooms to play is pretty common. According to the history it sounds like the card room at the time back in the day used to be thriving, but let's be honest, it sounds like the management that took over drove what once was a draw to players into a back alley dive that gets as much respect to it's name as the piss that people take on it's doorstep.

Usually people that run businesses tend to want to go in the other direction, so it's a mystery to me why this one wants to skim just above the surface.

How hard would it be to open another card room in Santa Cruz?

[edit] dealer complaints
