[edit] Introduction
Resorts East Chicago (formerly Harrah's East Chicago) has a poker room with 16 tables. All tables have automatic shuffling machines. The room is located on the top floor of the casino; it is a non-smoking room, separate from the rest of the casino.
[edit] Directions
From Chicago: Take the Skyway (Indiana Toll Road) east. Exit onto Cline Ave (IN-912) south, and take that for 4 or 5 miles. Exit at Pastrick Marina, or just follow the billboards. Once you've exited from Cline Ave, follow the signs carefully to end up at the casino, rather than the marina itself.
From most of Indiana: Take I-80 west. Exit onto Cline Ave (IN-912) north, and take that for 5 or 6 miles. Exit at Pastrick Marina, or just follow the billboards. The exit from northbound Cline Ave all but dumps you directly into Resorts' parking garage.
By Shuttle Bus: If you need info on the Resorts shuttle buses, go to http://www.resortseastchicago.com/transportation.shtml. It details costs, locations, and schedules. It also includes phone numbers of the various bus companies in case you need more details.

[edit] Tournaments
There is a $200 + $30 no limit hold-em tournament every thursday at 1pm, registration begins at 11am.
[edit] Rake structure / time collection
The limit hold'em games are raked at 10% up to $5 when 8 or more players are seated, and up to $3 when 7 or fewer players are seated. Be certain to watch the dealer when a table becomes seven-handed, as they will frequently try to over-rake. An extra $1 per pot is collected for the bad-beat jackpot at $5/$10 games.
No-limit hold'em 1/2 and 2/5 nl raked as limit games. 5/10 nl and up games are not raked; rather, a $8 per half-hour time charge is taken if there are 8 or more players, $7 per half-hour if there are 7 players, $6 per half-hour if there are 6 players, and $5 per half-hour if there are 5 or less players.
[edit] Quality of opposition
The $5/$10 and $10/$20 limit hold'em games are generally considered soft by good players. The difference is that, predictably, the soft $10/$20 players are generally trickier and more aggressive than the soft $5/$10 players. Obviously, the average low-limit hold'em player in East Chicago, Indiana is not nearly as fishy as the World Poker Tour-watching Las Vegas tourist; that said, these games can be consistently profitable, even with the house taking $6 per pot out of the $5/$10 game.
The low-limit hold'em players are an eclectic bunch, ranging from sunglasses-wearing WPT watchers, to loose-aggressive gamblers, to call-anything-pre-flop retirees, to solid players. Table selection is key. Watch in particular for someone to totter over from the 7-card stud table to try his hand at hold'em. There is no such thing as domination in stud, and so these fellows will pay off a great deal with weak aces and kings.
The low-limit 7-card stud players are, almost to a man, elderly and loose-passive.
[edit] Wait time
Wait times can be long, up to two hours, particularly on nights and weekends. Unless you are insane, you will call 219/378-3558 to get on one or more waiting lists; the floor supervisors will keep your spot on the list(s) for up to one hour.
[edit] Other
There is a bad-beat jackpot for all games at $5/$10 limits and below. To qualify for the jackpot, a hand that is at least as good as aces full of tens (hold'em) or four eights (7-card stud, Omaha) must be beaten. Also, the pot must contain at least $30, the hand must go to a showdown, and in hold'em both the winner and the player taking the bad beat must use both hole cards to make their hands.
