"Anyone been to the Foreign Correspondents Club? Do I have to buy a membership to get in? Dress code?"

I went there several times, most notably for my friend Shawn W. Crispin's birthday party with Bertl Litner. Shawn worked for Far Eastern Economic Review before it was dropped by Wall Street Journal. Bertl is a Burma expert who has lived in Thailand for decades.

I don't remember any dress code. I was always invited to attend parties and I worked for a magazine so no help on membership either.

I can't believe I just read this entire thread. I knew nothing about Thailand before. Thanks for all the information.

The fact that I could live amazingly well there and still be a low-limit poker bonus whore is all too enticing for me. UGGGghhhhhhh.

Must... resist... dropping out of school and selling my car and moving to Thailand.... I don't want to live through yet another Winnipeg winter. Someone talk me out of it.

Can you imagine living on the beach, going out all the time, having a maid, etc, and have MORE money leftover than you do now, huddled in your cramped apartment and stocking up on Dinty Moore and maple syrup in anticipation of another long winter?

haha, dude...take a trip there first. don't make a huge life decision and move to another country if you have never even been there.

it is awesome, but it isn't for everybody. 3 weeks over there should let you know real quick whether or not it is for you

New airport encounters major glitch

The baggage handling system at Suvarnabhumi Airport encountered a major technical glitch yesterday, leaving over 6,700 outbound luggage items stranded at the airport. Suvarnabhumi Airport director Somchai Sawasdeepol said the automated system crashed twice, between 6.00-6.20am and 9.00-10.00am, resulting in 6,722 pieces of luggage missing their flights.

Ouch thats a lot of missing luggage

lol dont forget the fouls getting called on just about everything.

when i played there when i was in phuket, there were 2 foreign teams in the league, both from my school. on the whole they treated us ok, but some of the thai refs were alittle biased *sort of expected - they thought of us a rich pricks who couldnt play*. also if you ever play for a league there, watch out for players ref'ing games..

you're probably right - i never went to ISB, but did go to RIS, where we had some excellent ball handlers, shooting guards and centers (the starting center got a scholarship to some D2 school stateside), so thats where i drew the conclusion from, guessing that since ISB has more students now, they'd have a better team.

I've been toying with the idea of a long vacation to thailand for a while now, and have been kinda stuck on if to do it or not. Tonight I had a pretty strong finish in a freeroll mtt, and I'm trying to figure out if I can justify the trip to myself by saying it's all the money from that and not my br. Just exactly what kind of money would have to be spent for 1 month living less then 1 block from the beach in a hotel/apartment that doesn't have to be all that nice + living expenses that consist of going to the bars ~5 nights a week.

Also, yes this is a badly disguised brag post that should be in bbv

I pay $300 for a nice 1 bedroom. You can rent a motorbike for $75 for the month and drive to the beach in < 2 mins.

Food is cheap. The rest depends on your party habits.

"1. any of these places in BKK similar to USA cities? such as;

No.

"2. whats is the nices/riches are of BKK metro area? waht is poorest? "

The richest is like Compton, the poorest is like a sewer in NYC.

"3. is it relaistic for me to buy a gun in BKK and carry it w/o any trouble? "

You can only carry Bazookas.

"4. race demographic? Will I be the only white dude in every building I enter? 1/100 ratio? "

You will be the only white person in the country.

"5. any know porn industry in thailand? (ill google it, just add comments if you know info) "

What's porn?

" 6. Points of interect outside of thailand? I believe a 6-10 hour ride will take you to cambodia/laos/vietnam/burma etc.."

What happens in Thailand stays in Thailand. You are not allowed to leave.

"7. how much does a night out = ? (cab fair, cover to nice club, 8-12 drinks, dinner at decent resteraunt)x2 (for me and lady friend) "

Too much for you.

"8. If I wander the streets of BKK w/o attempting to pick up chiks; just regular 20yo white boy joe will non husseling women apprach me? or do i need to make minor atempt @ picking up women "

Even here you will have a hard time getting laid.

" 9. how do male citizens react to white dudes? Do they like us as much as the women? "

You will likely be killed if they find you.

Today I went to a shopping mall and went into a coffee shop. I am waiting online and this regular thai girl whispers in my ear "I watch TV. White man have big YoYo". She then says "Me Virgin" and grabs my johnson. I am used to this happening and just laugh, as does the rest of the people waiting in line. When I get to the cashier she says "Coffee free for you. Please come in back. I want to suck your [censored]". I look at my watch and tell her that Ive got to get going ((but in reality I turned her down because on the way to the shopping mall the Thai Taxi Driver noticed that I was a white man and called his wife, who we later picked up so she could suck my [censored] in the back of his Taxi))... These are regular Thai girls - I dont want you to get the wrong idea...

As for carrying a gun. Dont be silly, of course its common and legal. Do you want to take one in with you? If so, be sure to ask the stewerdess for a "blue gun form" while you are exiting the plane. Then when you pass through immigration they will give you a blue sticker that means your gun is registered... If you dont want to register, you can buy a hand gun in most of the 7/11's located throughout the city... But most farang do not take this route... Instead they just hire protection. I usually take two former Thai Green Berets wherever I go. It costs $50/month for this service.

Porn is non profitable industry in Thailand. The way it works is as follows. The producer walks around bangkok looking for 20 yo ave joes minding their own business and asks them if they want to make some movies. They will usually pay you around $1000USD/movie. If you do a threesome with two girls, you can sometimes talk the price up to $1500USD/movie. They only use Virgins. This can be alot of fun, but there is a huge ritual before the sex that involves scared dancing to worship the white man's penis. sometimes it can drag on for more than 30 minutes. that is the only downside.

as for the gun; figured if I have a balla pad, am a total noob tourist, and I live in a 3rd world country, I will need some security.

It is a felony to produce porn in Thailand. You can hire Thai security for fairly cheap.

Neither of those responses was a joke.

Sorry but your questions just seemed really retarded, would have helped more if you explained this stuff first.

If you run porn sites nobody will know so it wont matter. As long as you are not selling porn or making it here in Thailand you will be fine.

I make porn tapes with beautiful Thai girls on a daily basis but since its for my personal collection and Im not selling it then its all good.

haha. I dont wanna get this thread off track. Running a porn site is not what you think. 95% of sites don't produce their own conent, instead they use TGP galleries, (kind of like an affiliat scheme). Unfortunately it is the sites that produce their own conent that rake in the big $. So I was hoping I could get something like bangkokschoolgirls .com going

So right now, I'm nothing to post about, i live poor and unhealthy and rely on financial support from parents.A living, but a [censored] one. Once Im a hot shot maybe 3-5 years from now, I'll make a post about my sites etc... I'm more focused on school right now.

well, I'm running @ 5bb/100 playing 6max .25/.5nl. I usually 8 table, and squeeze in about 1,000 hands a day. thtas about 2 hours of playing. I guess 25$ a day. My sites gross about 270$ a year. I have a few sites in the making that I hope become cashflows as well. With this money.... I'd be a bum in BKK.

However, Like I said; I'm focusing on school (for the next 3 years prolly). Hopefully when im out of college I'll be able to afford a baller life style in BKK (note: I'd be sharing rent w/ friend, so 50%).

That is a point I should ad. I dont think im mature enough to live there alone. I would need a fellow USA citizen w/ me.

No but I easily could have I guess. I was hanging out with some hotties and had one of those "I have to go to bed RIGHT NOW" moments at 6am or so and pulled the sneak away from everyone and pass out within 10 seconds of opening the door moves.

I figured I might as well just chime in with my thoughts on Thailand:

Thailand is an awesome place. The food is great. If you go to Bangkok and walk around, you will automatically eat way healthier, since if you're like me, you actually really like stuff like pinapple and watermelon, its just too much effort to go buy a pinapple when you want a snack. In Thailand it's like 15c for a bag for really fresh pinapple and you can get them everywhere. You can get a guy to blend a mango, some papaya and a banana together, for like 20c. The women are hot and friendly. I recommend checking out the south, islands like Koh Pha Ngan (if you're 18-25) and Koh Samui (if you're like 26-X) have awesome night life (check out the full moon party as others have said, it is seriously awesome fun), Koh Tao has some great diving spots and is a great place to learn to dive, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi (one of the areas The Beach) was filmed have incredible natural landscapes and beaches (yeah, definitely no waves though, people kind of just lounge around like crocodiles in the water). I met a guy who was playing 5-10 limit who was living on Koh Pha Ngan playing 2 tables and he was a pretty average player, but he was making enough to live there.

Bangkok is a cool place to spend money, there's good night life, places to shop like crazy, etc. It also has the best hospital I have ever stepped foot in in my life (it's also very cheap, especially compared to your retarded American version of healthcare, and even our slightly less retarded Australian version). If you want something more cultural you can check out Chiang Mai in the north which is usually the starting point for trekks people go on with the hill tribes and there's lots of temples and such there, it's an interesting place but not my favourite.

If you're planning to move to Thailand though, I think you have to be the right sort of person. I couldn't do it personally, since I hate being waited on hand on foot for everything, I can't handle people who avoid confrontation at all costs, and also because I think the life that you can live there is almost too easy. Even if you just teach english there, it's easy enough to get enough money to buy some ok clothes, get happily drunk and hook up with some random chick every other night. I just don't feel like you progress any as a human being in this kind of environment, personally I had troubles having any kind of real conversation with anyone about anything. But the people are great and friendly. Hard to explain.

Go there for a holiday and check it out, place is mad good. Go dive on Koh Tao, get wasted on the full moon, meet heaps of whacky backpackers, hook up with thai chicks and easy going euros, go run a crazy 60 hour bender in bangkok, and then decide if you want to live there. Bit like Vegas, really. I'd get depressed if I lived there for more than a few months though, I think, but that definitely doesn't mean you will.

First I stayed at this hotel. I have stayed there every year I visited in the past too.
Grand President Topaz Suite, Bangkok: Oct 2004 it was $750/monthly rate (prices may vary depending on season)

It's not as ballin as Degen's pad I'm sure, but it works for me and my budget. It is very centrally located and has gym, sauna, pool etc.

Ah, but does Degen's pad have Milano cookies like yours does?

I just read the entire thread.

Thanks for the contributions, everyone. Both educational and entertaining.

A couple of questions I haven't seen answered:

In the U.S., almost all Thai food has peanuts or some kind of peanut-related item in it. The exception to that seems to be food with coconut. How similar is this to food in Thailand itself? Would someone with a serious peanut allergy be able to easily eat in Thailand, or would they always have to check everything they ate?

Why has no one posted photos of the Thai Pizza Hut girls?

How is the postal system there? Specifically, how easy would it be to go to Thailand, pick up some of those nice custom shirts and stuff, and just mail it back to your country of origin, instead of taking it on the plane?

The geckos eating all of the other bugs sounds pretty awesome, but people are still talking about cockroaches. Do the geckos not eat them too?

I was pretty curious about the "do the geckos eat the cockroaches?" thing, so I did some research, and found the following:

A bunch of photos of 100 baht Ranong rooms. This includes a cockroach that died and some ants show up and carry it out of the room. Also, a gecko. The gecko looks more squat than I thought it would. Guess he is eating well. The guy running that site is travelling around the world, he is currently in West Africa. I just bookmarked it, looks like a solid read. The updates go back 3 years, with photos. He's been doing it for 10. A ton of Thailand entries.

Another good story I found: Then, as Iím still processing everything, I see another, then another, then another, and suddenly, I realize that THOUSANDS of cockroaches are pouring out from any crack in the pavementÖ.

Chopstick, the Postal service is ok, and you could prolly trust it to take care of what you want.

You shouldn't have too much of a problem getting food that is not made with peanuts, but you have to realize that thai people may not take your request seriously. You could just do what I do and hire a personal chef.

its like impossible to write thai language in roman letters, but peanut sounds like too-ay. So if you were going to order something like pad thai, or sumtum thai from a street vendor you could say "mai ow too-ay krap" which would mean no want peanut please.

you will just have to know which dishs are going to contain peanuts and then tell them ahead of time. if it is really busy, than avoid those dishs becauses they might not hear what you say and jut nod. better yet, get someone at your hotel to write it down on a piece of paper.

It sounds more like too-UH everytime I hear it said.

'Mai Sigh too-uh' is a better way to say it.

It means 'without peanuts' instead of 'dont want peanuts'

Learning to write Thai is a bitch. I started to learn but have been lazy for about 2 months so I need to start over again.

Im heading for Samui in two months, and I know this has probebly been asked before but its not easy to find answers in this thread now that it has become this big.

I'm planning on staying there for two months and i would like to have reliable internet so i can at least have 4 tables running (cant really afford not playing for 2 months). Is this possible for Koh Samui, it doesnt have to be in room im renting and i can leave with couple of disconnects in a month ( maybe up to 5).

Last time i was there but i didnt played or used internet but i remember this IT Complex just outside Lamai, is that an option for reliable internet?

Thanks and im sorry if these questions have already been answered.

Whats your budget?

You might be able to find a room in Chaweng and also be able to pick up a wireless signal. Some nicer hotels have free wifi provided. Your only other option would be to play at internet cafes but I cant imagine that would be too fun.

I totally agree with you both. This is exactly why this summer I decided to head back to the states after living in Bangkok for the last two years. I'll miss a lot of things but it's all good, I had a real good run here. I'm flying out this weekend. Peace out!

When it comes to vacation destinations or even for a year, I think it is hard to beat Thailand. I have vacationed here since 2000 and every year it was fuggin awesome!

$1,000 = 40,000 baht and is plenty for a month of rent here.

What are you looking for? A decent hotel, or a private little villa?

Here is something I just found in a Local Samui magazine: 2 Bedroom little villa. 1 bathroom full kitchen TV with sattellite ADSL Internet Shared swimming Pool Daily house cleaning

30,000 baht per month.

You could also get a monthly rate from a hotel for around the same price.

$200 rent. Food costs vary. If your eating thai food then its like $2 a day. If your buying and making your own food you might spend a few hundred a month on food. If your getting Mcdonalds delivered for lunch everyday it will be more.

Booze is pretty cheap.

i've seen some $5 tourneys on the islands. dunno much about organized pool. i do know that there are lots of dudes there who take it very seriously and are very good.

also pool is a very good way to tell if a girl you are talking to is a bar girl/was a bar girl. if she is a very good pool player, chances are she used to work in a bar. lots of good thai girls wont even play pool cuz of the stigma.

To the guy that axed the question about pool .. I went to a smaller city named Lampang, and I saw that the played snooker and a sign on the front of the building said "No Gambling."

Gambling is illegal in Thailand.

John: Getting take out from small Thai shops/food carts is the cheapest way to eat. I just spend $2.50 for my girlfriend and I to eat lunch. We went to a small thai restaurant and shared 2 dishes with rice and also 2 sides.

For dinner im going to a 'korean bbq' and its $1.75 each for all you can eat. They have raw meat and seafood and you cook it all at the table yourself.

You can eat healthy if you want too but their are a lot of fried items.

When I lived in bangkok I spend about $100 a week at the grocery store and made my own western meals at home. I also used to have good sushi meals delivered for $5 each.

When you go to eat at a family run place in Chiang mai, the average dish costs about 20-25 baht. A pepsi is another ten baht. This makes the average meal about $1. But, you'll get tired of these and want to go somewhere nice occasionally. A meal at a nicer restaurant will usually cost somewhere from 5-6 dollars.

PS

Surat Thani sucks. My travel agency f'd me over and I got stuck here tonight and I walked around for like an hour and didn't see a single thing that looked even remotely fun

Anyways, en route to this beach at Phuket (Hat Kata or something) where this guy told me there are surfable waves. If it sucks I'm just gonna say screw it and go to Bali or Indonesia or whatever (anyone been here/surfed here?)

The internet says waves should be 5 feet or so on Friday but it might be windy and dangerous. Hopefully its not to bad Also best windsurfing at Phuket?

My first Thailand scam, thats how. I went to three travel places. Basically I got in town at like 5 to catch my bus at 6. So I get in this minibus which takes me to another travel agent, where I switch buses AND GO BACK TO THE FIRST AGENT (alarm bells already going off in my head btw). Anyways, I get in this other bus and go to another place where a minibus is there to go to Bangkok and none for Phuket so I'm like wtf and they take me back to the second travel agency and I'm like seriously, what the [censored] is going on? Then they say opps the real bus is coming it'll be here soon and then "so sorry, bus in wreck" (lol sure dude) and I'm like [censored] you give me my money back and leave and go to another place but it was too late then I went to a third place and it was "too late" so I said [censored] the world and got a room and will get on the bus first thing tomorrow.

And now I'm stuck in the most boring place in all of Thailand. I tried to find any bar no matter how lame and couldn't.

They have those signs in the US too - they don't mean anything usually, they just keep the owner from being hassled by the local cops. Someone else posted about being hustled for 100THB by some kid so I'm sure wagering on pool isn't unheard of.

I hope you didnt have the travel agency find you a hotel room. Seems like they purposely delayed you so they could book you into one of their hotel rooms. Is this the case or did you find a room to stay for yourself?

You need to goto phuket? Just goto the main bus station in town, should be real cheap to get there. There will be minibuses all day. Dont goto a travel agency, just go book the ticket yourself.

Dont beleive everything they tell you. There are a lot of people who are looking to make an extra 50 baht off you every step of the way. Also, if you know they are jerking you around dont be afraid to say something. Dont be passive. Speak up and tell them you wont be [censored] around with. You dont need to be agressive but raise your voice and let them know you wont be taken for a ride.

These are the situations where its good to know some thai. When they play games with me I let them know I know how it is in their own language and they shut right up.

I did so when i was in suratani and was going to Phuket last year, they had bunch of them and then comes those small minivans that take you to Phuket. That was my first time in Thailand so i went with the rest of the people who were all going to these small travel agencies.

I thought of another question. You guys have talked a lot about going to pool halls and such. Is there a big pool scene there? Are there tournaments and gambling and such? If so, what sort of stakes are involved? Please tell me everything you know or have observed.

Pool is quite popular here, almost every bar will have a table in it. There are a number of pool halls in bangkok with professional tables and simonis cloth, pro balls, cue tec house cues, imported cues for sale etc. Hustlers included. There are money games to be found. Some Thai players are very good. There are lots of expat players too.

I recommend "Ball in Hand" near Asok BTS station or off of soi nana. Those are the best pool halls in Bangkok for 9-ball or 8-ball. There is also a nice one in Pattaya called MegaBreak. They have weekly tournaments. I think you could win like 5-8k baht for first prize. Entry is like 500 or 700 baht.

There are alot of snooker halls too. Thai guys prefer snooker. It's fun to switch it up and play snooker on a 15 foot table with tiny pockets and then go to a 9 footer at the regular pool hall and play like a God for a while.. hehe.. My Canadian friends always kicked my ass at snooker. Tough game man. I prefer 9-ball.

There are some smaller spots too. This pic below is from a place called Wave bar on Sukumvit Soi 7 They have about 7 tables.

A question I don't think I've seen asked: Will I still enjoy Thailand even if I'm not the "OMG LET'S PARTAY 24/7 AND GET WAAASTED" type? This thread makes it seem like it's spring-break all year round.

I'm not a complete hermit and would occasionally like to party-it-up while I'm there, but more importantly I want to go somewhere for some peace and tranquility. Basically what I'm saying is that I want to live in a Corona commercial.

Ok. I'm thinking bout visiting in January. I've never been overseas, and I have never even organized a major trip for myself before(I do tons of road trips, normally do fine in unfamiliar places, just not used to much planning ahead of time).

What do I need to do now, 2.5 months ahead? I'm kinda clueless and don't feel like dealing with a travel agent when I have 2+2.

thanks.

Dating a stripper? Better make her pay for dinner.

Wait until more Thai girls find out they can move to Vegas and make 4 million baht a year.

How much will this cost;

  1. 1 round trip ticket from SFO to BKK. Baught 8 month in advance for "best season to visit BKK"
  1. 30 nights in a house/condo/apt/hotel that has two beds. Not a total dump, but not a baller pad. Something that would look "regular" in USA. Pool. Kitchen. Internet. Location should not be in heart of downtown. I need a few miles of buffer zone.
  1. 4 meals a day. 1 of the meals is delivered sushi to my pad. 1/2 galon of filtered water every day
  1. 30 days of transportation. (10 miles average trip in taxi/day) 10 miles by public transit/day
  1. 10 nights of clubbing. 12 alcahol drinks each clubbing night
  1. 10 nights of other non-free activities (non prostetution)Fight shows, museums, golf, etc..
  1. shopping; 10 DVDs, 2 "designer" suits, 2 T shirts, 1 hat, shot glass, 3 other things
  1. miscellaneous expenses (picking up school girl and spoiling her etc..)

Dude your asking questions that have many different answers. Prices varry greatly and we have already mentioned 'general prices' many times in this thread.

" 30 days of transportation. (10 miles average trip in taxi/day) 10 miles by public transit/day"

Where did you come up with this number?

"1 round trip ticket"

So you want one of us to do a price search online for you? How hard is it to find airfare prices?

All of the things you mentioned are extremely broad and vague questions. You can go clubbing for $20 or $200. Why do you need "a few mile buffer zone" in bangkok?

Simple answer to all of that is like a 75% discount from doing comparable things in comparable cities in America.

Roundtrip airfair is like $600 for a really good deal booked in advance, $1200 for a ticket booked the day before during peak season...thats coach.

I stay 2 years now in Thailand and I have for the whole time some roommates I really hate (no not drunken thai man):

ANTS!

After eating some chocolate or nuts my girlfriend has to clean up immediately or (in case shes working) after a couple of hours or so I have an antshighway in my room. They hide normally behind the sockets or behind chinks or holes in the wall.

What I do is to try rid of them with Baygon or some other spray but they come back.

You know a better measures to get rid of them or do I just have to live with this problem (what some expats told me)?

Baby powder works ok. Or, you can get some stuff at a hardware store that works well.

"10 miles day travel" = pulled out of my ass. Have no idea, rough estimate.

"buffer zone" = have an image of downtown BKK being a wild area with noise and action 24/7. I'd like to be away from the center where Im not a sardine squeezed into can. I guess a little more remote location, while still being in the hairy part.

"3 other things" = yet to find out. I guess 3 things I cant get in USA. We shall see. BR managment is correct; IM not trying to buy expensive stuff.

I agree many of my questions seem like im high/drunk/ not thiking clearly.

I'm renting a nice 2 bedroom appartment pretty much in downtown bkk (Sukhumvit soi 2). I'm in the end of a dead-end street 5 min walk from a main artery and its very quiet most of the time. Also, you dont want to take a 1 hour taxi ride each day you want to go out or go to a nice restaurant. Bangkok is huge, and the traffic can be very slow. The nice thing about my place is that I can go to most daily places walking, and the big shopping-cinema areas are a 10 min taxi ride.

Also, most bars close at 2 am...

Checkout the building on the corner of Soi 1 and Sukumvit, w/ all the go-go bars in the first floor. They have an open air bar on the top floor that stays open until 4 most nights. Pretty cool spot.

if you want to live in Bangkok and are worried about transportation, live near the skytrain. it kicks total ass.

Also, why are you coming to Thailand to live in an apt for 30 days? TRAVEL Go all over. In 30 days I went to like 8 places that were awesome. I had a lot more fun than living in some apt in Bangkok for 30 days. I didn't spend a lot either, less than 2k I'm 99.9% sure

i stayed at the atlanta hotel at the end of soi 2 for about a month when i first arrived. its a very nice little hotel and has a nice pool and resteraunt downstairs. if you dont know, a motorcycle taxi to take you to plenchit bts instead of the end of the soi, much faster than having to walk to nana BTS.

I have a free tuk-tuk ride to sukhumvit, I'm in Amar Garden in case you know. I may try the restaurant you talk about when I want to have a quick meal. And Degen, thanks for the tip, sometimes I want another beer at 2 am, because its too damn early to end a night sometimes.

Are both major airports currently in operation or has the Don Muang airport shut down?

Also, can someone recommend a hotel in Bangkok? A two-bedroom suite would be ideal, as would being walking distance of a lot of stores and restaurants. My housing budget will be between $800-$1,000 per month. I'll likely be all over Bangkok in my first month in Thailand but I'd like to book a place for the first night or two since I have to connect with a friend of mine who flies in ten hours later than I.

depends if you want new stuff. first time i went i brought a backpack with ipod, couple books, laptop and credit/atm cards and passport.

weather now is hot so you wont need many pants, though it is nice to have at least one pair and a nice shirt if you want to go out.

my uniform 90% of the time is short, sandals, t-shirt. all of this can be had for pennies on the dollar in bangkok, so i bought all new stuff on my first trip.

also you can get passport sized photo's on the cheap at most any travel agency.

You can pretty much just show up in Thailand with a credit card and go from there.

You can buy cloths and stuff so cheap. Even decent clothes. I have some really nice clothes that are good quality that were like $10 each. I also have a ton of t-shirts that were like 70 baht (<$2)

Best way to Phuket is just to land in bangkok and fly to phuket. There are like 25 flights a day and its only like a 50 min flight.

Isn't it hard finding clothes that fit for anyone 6ft or taller, or a bit on the heavy side.

That's what I found in Korea. Most men there are relatively short/slim.

If your buying clothes from street side stalls then you might have trouble but if you are going to stores you can usually find big sizes.

What should I bring? I'm going Nov 10th for a month. Just bringing a backpack, no laptop, just traveling and enjoying life. T-shirts, shorts, socks, toothbrush, $$. Anything really essential?

When you buy your backpack try to get one with a detachable daypack. Otherwise you will need a big hiking/camping backpack and a small one to carry when you go out snorkling/sightseeing or whatever.

Anyways, I've been traveling for ~1.5 months now and I think you would be fine with a single pair of shoes (I've used 4 times hiking/mtb biking/ect) and a pair of sandals you can walk all day in comfortably (Birkenstocks are awesome). Other than that, you could probably land with just the clothes on your back and your guidebook and be fine.

Everything I brought

backpack with daypack 1 pair pants (have not used) 1 pair shorts 2 shirts (one nice button up-have not used) shoes sandals and a PACK OF PENS (the pens here suck for some reason)

then I just bought [censored] when I needed it like shampoo and a razor and whatever

I just bought clothes as I go along.

Chiang Mai kicks ass and if I was going to live in Thailand teaching or playing poker or whatever I would do it there. Its really cheap, nightlife is OK, not as wild as the islands or whatever, good food like everywhere in Thailand, and there are lots of farangs around. I liked it a lot.

PS

if anyone remembers that travel agency I mentioned, they tried to screw me again. Me and some other people were heading to Ko Tao and had to pass through Surat Thani and the bus dropped us off there and they tried the exact same [censored] scam on us. "No boat tonight because of them monsoon" stay here and so on. I was like "I was here last week [censored]" and we all caught a cab to the pier and hopped on the boat.

haha ok, well Nana Hotel is on Sukumvit Soi 4 and very close to the BTS Skytrain, so you'll be a short distance from it all.

It is in the heart of the red light district...when you walk out of your hotel you'll be staring at Nana Plaza, which is basically Go-go bar central in Thailand.

It was a bit of a joke to tell you to stay there, but if you don't find another place, just hop in the taxi at the airport and say 'Sukumvit Soi See, Nana Hotel' and you'll be better off than whererever those [censored] at the airport tell you to go.

Another place would be to just go to Koh Sarn road and shack up at a Sawadee Guest House, they have them all over. Thats for the 18-22 year old set, or thereabouts. Koh Sarn is like backpacker mecca. If you like that scene, you may like that a whole lot better than Nana.

I live in Chiang Mai..

Pro's to living in Chiang Mai over BKK:

Weather: It isn't nearly as hot as in the big city of Bangkok.

Cost: Apartments and stuff are probably significantly cheaper.

Traffic: Not nearly as much traffic as in BKK.

Farang Factor: I'd say you have better status as a Farang. its very easy to go off to a small town and you'll be a rarity/ god. you're still going to have balla status in BKK, but it will be even stronger here.

Landscape: Its quite beautiful up here. They're having a floral expo here, and I understand they'll be having a Muay Thai fight every night.

Cons:

Boring.. I think its prolly a little more boring here..

Nightlife: I don't think there's much of a club scene here at all..

Oceans: Not near the sea.

I'd also say you can get a better feel for old Thai culture up here, and you can also get a better feel for the whole "3rd world" thing. John Voigt, experiencing the culture and stuff might not interest you now, but when you get here, you'll appreciate it more.

As far as internet and things like that go.. I get a great internet connection. There aren't any technological things I need that I can't get.

Degen,

I'm a bit in a quandary now. I'm thinking I probably don't want to go to a backpacker mecca. But then again I don't know what kind of life a backpacker lives, I get a picture of long haired dudes living on noodles, that might not be correct tho .

What about places to eat, i'm guessing they are everywhere?

Is sukhumvit soi a street where all the fancy hotels are at? I saw that the Grand President is also on sukhumvit soi.

Sukumvit is the name of the road, Soi means Street in thai. Basically Sukumvit is a very very long main artery with like 90 or so streets going off of it called 'soi's'. If you stay on 'Sukumvit' that means exactly nothing, as the street is miles long. The Soi 1-Soi 12 area is upscale and fun, lots of bars and clubs, but also a bit trashy as thats where most of the go-go bars and stuff are as well, so you'll see a lot of hookers and their john's etc.

Sukumvit soi 12-24ish is much much classier in the way of lots less hookers, a bit less to do, more shopping etc. There are nice hotels in all of this. Beyond 24 starts to decline in quality a bit overall, as well as having less to do. There are still loads of nice places to live and I'd imagine hotels, but it gets a bit more industrial and residential and lots of $200 a month apartments mixed in.

It is really hard to name a specific hotel (at least for me) as there are so many of them, each kind of looses its identity.

Backpackers are usually very cheap, so they want cheap hotels, and they like cheap booze and places to eat and shopping. You'll get all of that at Koh Sarn. You have to see it at least once, just that most ppl wanna get the f' out of the pretty quick once they arrive. You'll see what I mean.

I stayed at the Grand Inn on Sukumvit Soi 3 for awhile when I first got in, not a bad spot. 1200 baht a night or so, great location etc

and ya, there are places to eat all over, and taxi's.

a) thailand is probably the safest place i have ever been

b) electronics are typically more expensive there for some stupid ass reason.

Ok, I'm going to graduate in December.

I'm really burnt out on general life things(family, my job, etc.)

I think getting away from it all for a few months would be a good thing for me. This thread has made Thailand very attractive for a getaway.

I'm not looking to live a baller lifestyle or booze it up every night, although I do enjoy a night of drunken debauchery every once in a while. I am mainly looking to chill, play poker, and get to know a foreign culture.

I am looking at a $750-$1000 budget per month. Bangkok is probably out of the question due to cost and crowds. After reading this thread Chiang Mai looks like a good place for me to stay.

What are the other cheap, quiter, but still has some measure of civilization places in Thailand?

This thread has convinced me, and I am planning on spending hopefully 2 weeks exploring thailand in January. Im thinking half in the bigger cities, half in some remote place hiking/backpacking and just getting away from the world.

I have to give a persuasive speech in class tuesday. I think I might do it on the attractiveness of a vacation to thailand. Which means tomorrow I am gonna read a lot of the earlier posts, maybe browse through the whole thread. INSTA expert on thailand.

Agreed.

You need like 2 days in bangkok to see some sights, then you hope on a plane to Chiang mai for 3 days, fly to Samui for 2 days. Hope over to KPN for a night. Goto Koh Tao / Nangyuan for 2 night. Back to samui and fly to Phuket. See phuket for 2 days. Head to krabi and out to some islands for 4 days at various places. Head to a few more islands for short trips.

Questions:

1. If I was to plan a trip it would likely be for 3-4 weeks and it would be me, my wife and my son. Are you aware of any sort of established babysitting/nanny service? Basically I would want to hire a live-in nanny for a month. I won't ask if it's possible, since you've stated that pretty much anything is on the table for the right price, rather, do you have any ideas on setting something like this up? 18-25 years old and cute would of course be a plus, but as the wife will be along, for viewing pleasure only.

2. My wife really likes the all-inclusive spa style vacations ala Mexico or Jamaica. I don't particularly like the price/quality ratio of these trips. Would it be feasible to go to one the islands mentioned and rent a 4 or 5 out of 5 star apartment or villa for a month that has access to a pool, gym and the like.

3. Alternatly, are the spa resort type places priced at 25%-35% of US costs like everything else, or do you get the standard "This is for tourists so it will be really expensive" markup. There's nothing more irritating than paying $80 for an hour massage when you know damn well the Masseur is getting maybe $5 for it.

4. I understand that the tailors can reproduce mens suits from magazines. Is this possible for women's clothing as well? Or are the tailors for men's clothes only? In other words, do the same sort of services exist for womens clothes?

Random comment: Maybe if I go I can find a nanny/cook/housekeeper and ship her home for like $2000k a year. 4x the average annual wage for her, really really good deal for me.

You might be able to arainge a nany for your trip in Thailand. Nicer hotels might even have a service available for you.

Spas are not that cheap here but you can goto a reagular massage place and get a 2 hour massage for $10-15.

There is no way you can get a nanny/cook to come to the USA for $2,000 a year. Your out of your mind. The Aurpair program which is basically what you are looking for makes you pay the Thai girl $175 a week or more. You have to pay standard minium wage. You think just cause they are thai you can pay them $2 an hour? Do you know anything about labor laws? What your asking for is a slave.

Internet quality? Bedrooms? How about a 3 bedroom there for 200 each or so?

edit

How did you find the house? I'm about to be in Samui and I want to check out options for the future

The best way to find nice places is to rent a bike and drive around into all the little nooks and sois. Thats how I found this place and another place Im thinking about moving into.

There are 10 houses identitcal to mine on this lot. There are a few emptys as well. They were asking $400 but I got it down to $250. Its a 1 bedroom. Has AC in the bedroom. Comes with tv and cable. Cable is $10 a month but I got it for free cause I know how to sweet talk old thai ladies.

"DSL" is $20. If you spend $100 then you get decent dsl. You can use dialup for $10 a month. I paid $75 to install a phone line. I actually have a sweet hook up. My neighboor has dsl with wifi and doesnt know how to secure it so I just leech free internet off of him. haha

The one thing I dont like about my place is the kitchen. Its just a sink and a fridge. You can gas and a burner but I dont bother. I have a rice cooker a sandwhich machine and pizza hut on speed dial so I get by ok.

You might be able to find a 3 bedroom for 200 each. Id say if you spend like 3-400 each then you would have a nicer place similar in quality to my place.

Ribsauce, if you are comming to samui have a drive and look around. The house next door is identical to mine and is free so check it out. I could negotiate you a killer deal like I got too.

Degan: Me and my two friends are gonna move to thailand atleast for 3 months. This thread is SO great! Thx for this. We have few questions...

1. You said that you cant use Neteller or Partypoker..My question is: Can I play online poker there and which sites? Im from Finland and is there any differences between USA and Finland ?

2. If you cant use Neteller, how u can withdraw your money from pokers ? Wire transfer to your account?

3. I know that there is big equality differences between guy and girl but it is okay if I want treat girls like I do in Finland? I dont want that girl makes every fckng morning breakfast for me etc.

4. Tell me three worst things in Thailand?

5. If its not illegal play online poker, is there any problems with that?

6. Is there any places where its not problem to buy weed without big risks? I mean some island or something, if u know some place, name would be nice =)

7. Is it hard to get apartment with internet ?

8. I know that there is big equality difference between men and womens but if I want treat girls like in finland, is it okay ? If not, what are problems?

And one more time, thx for this thread. Here is alot of important & intresting information =) We were gonna move to Australia but not anymore ;D

I basically went through this entire thread yesterday. Im like an expert now.

I would suggest doing the same. Just click show all then browse through. the answers to all your questions are in this thread.

on the GF attempting to plz you- from what KKF said this is not because they feel forced to at all. they are pleased if they can make you happy. its not like they are slaves or anything- let them plz you, and go out of your way with other things to plz them. This would work better, right guys? trying to figure out if i understood the earlier posts.

Poker Pro!,

If you take some time and read this massive thread, particularly the first few hundred posts, you'll learn far more than I can type out now to answer your questions.

Regarding treating women like you do in Finland, you might want to date tourists. I spoke to one American girl on Koh Pha Ngan that said she's never felt so ignored in her life, as she was in Thailand. She was a pretty hot girl too.

So if you want to go for tourists (and there are tons) then you should have a pretty easy time (assuming you're a good looking guy, charismatic etc) having your pick of them.

I'll stick to my Thai girls

Not all thai girls are like that.

My girl friend isnt running around trying to do everything for me. Thats the way I like it too. But my girl comes from a well off family so she was raised under different ideals.

degen,

I've read the entire thread as it's been formed, but there's still kinda a gray area in my mind. What is the best way for someone coming into thailand to find where he should stay for a month or so. I've read that it's best to ride around and try and find a place but it's a little scary to just show up in a thai airport hoping you can pass the language barrier and figure out how to find a place to stay.

I think I might be most at home just going to phi phi or some place similar to it. I have no idea what would be best as in what airport to fly into, and how in the world to find a good place to stay in other then paying overpriced online prices. Have you been to Phi Phi? and if so, how would be a good way of finding a place to stay?

also, if there's a better place to stay then phi phi for just being sorta remote, and being able to sit on an open beach I'm open to other places.

This truly was a random comment and as such, I was not serious. Besides, there would be no reason to go to Thailand for this as there are plenty of Mexican illegals to go around.

I appreciate the information on the spas and hotel sitting services though.

you been to Pha Ngan and Tao yet? Both are pretty awesome. You could do a dive course on Koh Tao for like 8k baht. Stay on Sairee beach of you go there, Had Rin on Pha Ngan.

Other option would be to fly over to Phuket and go to Phi Phi/Krabi.

I went to Bans. There are loads of them all up and down Sairee beach. Koh Tao dive culture is great.

It is mostly white people there...British, Australian, Canadian, Kiwi etc. Lots of the Thai ppl that have been there a long time speak english with an Australian accent. Just a really cool culture that is unlike anything else in any place in Thailand, or anywhere else I've been for that matter.

You meet all of these people who went to Thailand for a few weeks and went to Koh Tao and never left. They learn to dive then become instructors and stay there for a couple years or more.

There are also no police on the island (or at least thats what the divers say) so you see a lot of people smoking pot and such.

Pretty awesome.

Ok so like I said 900 posts ago, when I first got to Thailand I made the mistake of girlfriending a bar girl.

So anyway, I think my friend is still talking to her friend or something because I randomly got an email from her a week before I'm going to Thailand. She hasn't emailed me in probably six months. I haven't seen her in at least 9 months.

This is what you watch out for! They'll make you fall for them cuz they say all this bull [censored]. Don't beleive it!

How are you doing? What are you doing? You are with your girlfriend now? Did you have time to check your email everyday? It was so long that I didnít see you but I never forget about you. You are still the first man who I love although you will not care me anymore. Please remember that I still love and miss you so much. Iím so sorry that I try to know where you, who you are with?

Do you still get mad with me?

   Kiss to you,
   Thom

Thom is a common Thai female nickname, yes it is pronounced like the male name 'Tom'. Bad beat.

So to this I reply something very evasive and like 'do you still have my watch'. When I sent her back to Isaan before she conveniently forgot to return it.

She replies with:

   Quote:
I send picture for you. How i can send watch for you? You want me go back stay with you agian? now i different not same before, i know before i rash....Bill i'm sorry about that. Are you angry me?
   ( Before i love you,..but now i love you more )
   Take Care....I miss you alway

So ya. Moral of the story.

Issan girls, ick.

She snagged your watch? What a bitch. Play some games with her. Email her and tell her to meet you in a super far corner in outer bangkok. Then make her wait there for a few hours, tell her you will be there soon but traffic is bad. Then a few hours later call and tell her that you will have to postpone the meeting until tommorrow and repeat again.

any games and she will probably just take it out on the poor next bastard that comes along.

but you could tell her to meet you in airport, then get delayed three days in a row until she figures it out. i would probably jsut leave it alone though. those chicks are crazy.

i turned my phone nff

i have never heard a women so mad before when i spoke to her the next day lol

I think they need to make this into a giant banner and hang it in the airport.

Also, Degen touched on this before but I just want to recap it a bit. There are a lot of beautiful white chicks here and they get ZERO attention from guys because they guys are busy with Thai chicks. They are used to getting tons of attention back home and now nobody is giving them a second look. This means you can go all out and organize an orgy or something pretty easily with these chicks.

Bangkok to Phuket is like 12 hours via bus. Same to Samui.

Bkk to pattaya is like 3 - 3.5 hours IIRC.

BKK - CM is like 10 hrs. Although you can fly to all of these places in about an hour. CHeck out bangkokair.com for prices. The first and last flights of the day are usaully half price.

Im thinking about going to the Angtong National Marine Park tommorrow for some snorkeling.

   Quote:
Around 42 islands make up the Ang Thong National Marine Park. Formed largely from limestone, and geographically different from the other islands in the region, many of the islands have secluded beaches, coves and caves, while others rise from the sea as dramatic walls of rock hundreds of metres high. Besides the many small coves and beautiful beaches, erosion has shaped some interesting shapes, which give some of the islands their names, such as 'Sleeping Cow Island' and 'Three Pillar Island'.

Certain parts of 'the beach' were filmed here. Actaully, in the movie if you take a look at the map that he has, the beach iteself is actually Ang Tong marine park, but that is not where the majority of the filming was done.

I came to Thailand a month after the Tsunami.

I saw some damage in Phuket in certain areas and also Khao Lak was pretty much whiped out. Id say 'everything' is pretty much 'recovered' There are a lot of poeple who lost their homes (and lives) but I think that thailand has pretty much gotten back on their feet.

my roomate took a class 5 days a week for like 4 hours a day and after 4 weeks he was pretty damned good. he took a second 4 week course and he carries on conversations with people in thai. he says he isn't anywhere near fluet but its good enough to tell jokes and get to know ppl etc.

he took japanese in college tho, and couple other languages before that, so i think he's kinda adept at picking them up.

Just to prove my point mentioned above about farang chicks being desperate, tonight the white chicks were hounding me more then the Thai hookerrs. Desperate bitches. I gave them the cold sholder and deverted my eyes back to the gorgous asian eye candy.

Shot some pool over at green mango. Played a bunch of games before I realized that the balls from 2 tables were messed up and we have 8 stripes and only 6 solids. I was stripes all night too, no wonder I lost tonight.

certain people will probably do better. i never really cared enough to take a class. i just practice with some software, books, and other people. ive begun to learn to write thai because this is supposed to help you speak it better. once you speak enough to get by i think it can be v hard to push yourself to do more. it can be really fustrating when someone is teaching you and they say "No, its not Toong, its Toong" and they both sound exactly the same to you.

the best apart about speaking some thai is the strange looks people make when you come out with.

to be honest, most of the white chicks i find myself attracted to are the high schoolers around 16 years old. i guess i am turning thai!

That thread is pretty awesome. Its called "expats vs tourists - how to tell them apart?"

Some of my favorites:

   Quote:
expat: with a fine looking olive skinned 18-21ish Thai/Lao babe
tourist:with a skanky black as coal Issan schemer in her 30s

   Quote:
Tourist: Shirt with no sleeves, dreadlocks, shorts, generally a lot of white skin showing. More colorful clothes generally.
Expat: A somewhat dispeptic look from too much Thai food, sex, cheap beer, and smog.

   Quote:
   Expat: with Thai gf
Tourist: with Thai ladyboy thinking its his gf

   Quote:
Tourist: Amazed to find small children, selling flowers in the street at 2:00 am.
Expat: Amazed to find the little urchins haven't learned to get out of his way yet.

Keep in mind that is a teaching forum so most of those people are older and broke and a little bent on Thailand, don't take what they have to say too seriously

what is the best way to go about learning to read thai? I've learned other languages before, but thai has its own alphabet which is throwing me off a bit. How did you guys learn the thai alphabet and how long did it take until you were able to read thai? Not understand it, but be able to say it

Also how much of a problem did the tones present to you?

I'm using the guide at www.teachthai.com

A little cartoonish but its ok. Once I can read the characters and pronounce the tones correctly I should be able to pick up enough to be able to convey simple ideas.

I don't want to even start learning meanings with transliterations because they are all different and some are flatout wrong.

The best approach I can think of is to learn what the vowels look like and where each one of them is located in relation to the the starting consonants (in front, behind, on top, below) and then its a matter of what sound does the consonant make/what sound does the vowel make. It seems like a daunting task to memorize them since there are so many, so I will do it a few at a time.

www.learningthai.com is a pretty good way to get started. You can click on various words/phrases and hear it spoken so you can learn the tones.

I have been going to 1 on 1 tutoring for a few months and I can speak a fair amount but I'm not great at understanding it yet. In another few days I'll have finished the basic reading/writing course. I'll be able to read but usually won't have a clue what it means!

the only thing that is really hard is pronounciation. you could learn the alphabet in 2 weeks.

Any idea if learning Thai is easier/harder than learning Korean. I found Korean extremely difficult to grasp.

I just tried the google, and I think that's maybe the first time I've seen the Thai alphabet. It looks almost like Arabic, where Korean seems like it's closer to Chinese.

they say japanese and korean are the hardest languages in the world. i am sure that thai is easier. grammatically, it is a piece of cake. it is very easy to understand for me atleast, the only really hard thing is pronounciation.
