Well dsl in Thailand is overloaded. They split a line and share it with 50 people. If you pay $500 a month they will give you your own line.
On my dsl line I get SUPER FAST speeds at really strange hours when nobody else is using my line. I imagine that if you paid the $500 then these speeds would be all day long.
I dont think you can get it on Koh Tao though. Everything is kinda shaky there. Koh Tao is very nice. Samui is decent as well and very close so you can hop over there anytime you want.

Could you get 10 lines for 100 a month and have 20% of the bandwith?

Kind of. You can pay $100 and get a line that is shared by less people so you will get higher speeds.

Ah, i have finally read the whole thread. Great info, thanks Degen!

Me and four friends are planning a vacation down there and i have a questions for you.

Where in Thailand do you recommend us to live? I think my friends prefer to rent a house, or live in a hotel at the same place the whole time(1 month at least) and then take trips from there to see other places. We need internet to play poker.

Do you got any specific houses or hotels to recommend? How do we get in touch with them if you do?

We are not only looking for nightlife, it would be cool to try things like surfing, diving and stuff like that if you know what i mean.

Thanks, Per

Was that a joke? Forgive me but when people demonstrate terrible character it tends to agitate me. I don't like wife beaters either, I guess that might make me out of line too.
But on more pleasant notes, this has been a really good thread that I've really enjoyed reading. <3 Degen.

No it was not a joke. I'm sick of people giving him [censored] for that. The guy is about to have his one year anniversary with his wife but people keep talking about him like he mistreats her or something...if she wasn't happy i'm sure she would leave.
Your welcome for the thread, but please leave grandgnu alone about that.

Hey Bill, no big, but thanks for sticking up for me. Most of the people who bring up that past thing are just giving me a hard time, in a joking way.

The person in this thread calling me disgusting is entitled to their puritanical views, however misguided they may be compared with the way things are across the world.

Anyway, sorry for the thread-hijack.......back to Thailand:

QUESTION FIVE: The club scene. The wife and I enjoy bump n' grind music, not really into dancing to the hyper-techno stuff. I'm assuming that bump n' grind music would be difficult to come by at Thailand clubs, yes, no?

Its hard to tell someone where to live.

Your best bet is to travel around different areas and see what you like. I have stayed in some cool quiet areas and also in the middle of bangkok. now im living on an island. Whatever your tastes tou will find somewhere you will like. Interent is availavle everywhere.

Also, there are clubs almost everywhere in thailand so you wont have trouble finding somewhere to party.

Time to drag my American Consumer ass to Burger King and Starbucks...

Again, I will say that anybody considering moving to a country they have never been, and choosing the specific destination beforehand, is kinda crazy.

I think you guys should go over there and travel around for a few weeks. Common places that people fall in love with, for different reasons:

Bangkok

Chiang Mai

Phuket

Pattaya

Koh Samui

Koh Pha Ngan

Koh Tao

Koh Phi Phi

Krabi

These all have their positives and negatives, choosing one is totally a matter of personal preference. There is also a huge rural section of Thailand I've never been to called Isaan that I'm sure some people are crazy about as well.

You could seriously spend several months traveling around the country. I suggest you spend a minimum of two weeks hitting the spots above and then deciding where you want to settle in.

The hardest part about actually doing something like this is just getting on the [censored] plane. The rest is easy.

Don't think too much

Just remember that anybody coming up to you in Thailand and trying to sell you something is more than likely going to charge you more money than that thing is worth. So this means that choosing a guest house or bungalow is best by walking up to it yourself and inquiring, rather than trusting this nice little thai gentleman at the airport who is so excited to show you pictures of his 'brothers' property that has such a great view.

I'd say Pattaya on the mainland, or Phuket or Koh Samui for the islands might fit the bill. Again, travel around though and see for yourself. That may well end up being the fondest memory you have of the whole experience (it is probably mine)

American music is very popular over there. As somebody said before, they are fascinated by us and our culture.

It is always hilarious to walk into a public place (McDonalds for instance) and hear loud rap music playing with full on cussing in the lyrics and little children standing their with their parents etc. Obv the proprietors have no idea what the lyrics are.

Anyway...

As far as bumping and grinding, one complaint I have about Thailand (particularly Bangkok, not so much on the islands, as its mostly farang), is that in the clubs they have amazing music and layouts and lighting and all of that...BUT NO DANCE FLOOR! It drives me insane! In RCA for instance, there are like four of the best clubs I have ever been to all in a row...gorgeous Thai college students jam packed in all of them, but you can't dance with them! Thai people are so shy that the whole club is just little tables that all the Thai people stand around and giggle and smile at each other.

Yes it is possible to score numbers here, but it is pretty difficult if you don't speak Thai.

The one place in Bangkok I really like going that does have a great dance floor is the Bed and Supper Club on Sukumvit Soi 11. Seriously my favorite club in the world, and I've been to a few.

The club is split into two halves, this half has two floors of bed's that you can lay on and have drinks while listeing to music and watching people dance in the middle of the room. The second half is a pretty standard large dance floor. Problem for you is that it is mostly Techno, though I love that.

Do you know any sites where i can look at houses that are for rent?

Lets say me and my friends fly down there and decides to travel around at the beginning, how do we find a place to rent when we are down there?

Thanks, Per

Checkout the forums on www.thaivisa.com

I've never gotten that game mastered, with regarding to finding a place. On the islands a good way is to ask around. There are lots of websites but most charge way too much.

Let me know if you find any good resources and if anybody knows of any, please post them.

Hmmm.........they would probably react like the groups of fat chicks (typically come in three's) at clubs do when Jenn and I are bumping and grinding (i.e. they piss n' moan and get all upset cause they ain't getting any)

Or, at least, we'd feel awkward being the only people bumping n' grinding (we don't necessarily need a dance floor to dance like this). It would just be weird if everyone was just watching us.

Thanks for the lengthy response and awesome info. It's not that we don't like techno music, but it all tends to sound the same after awhile and we don't pop E so it's hard to be jumping around all night (and we're closer to 30 than we are to 20)

I can do a mean running man, but I need a good 10-20 square feet of space so nobody gets hurt.

There would be nowhere to do it, not in the popular clubs. They are packed with Thai people. Like PACKED.

Ratchida area in Bangkok would probably be your best bet, you could get your own table at Hollywood bar or one of the bigger places and probably dance at your table. You'll see when you get over, its just a bit different than america...tho still really fun.

Regarding music type, you'll find lots of clubs with rap or whatever kind of music you want.

Hmmm........good point, I keep forgetting there's something silly like 4 million people in Bangkok?

Well, thanks for the info. We've got the Foxwoods trip late next month, so probably won't be planning a vacation to Thailand unless I hit big in a tourney or something.

Buy a house?

Well if you look at the fancy glossy magazines you can buy a nice house in bangkok for like 200k and up. Places like samui you have to pay 3-4x as much.

My friend got 40 acers on a small island in the south for less then $20,000 and had the house built himself for like $50,000. If you contract all the work yourself you save a ton but it is a lot of work and most people dont want to deal with all of that.

If your looking for general ideas and what rent costs check out www.MrRoomFinder.com to get an idea. But the best way to find a place to rent is to rent a motorbike and drive around. Thats when you find all of the deals that thais are renting but dont put online.

They trade small huts for lathe's in the rural parts of the country

They have homes all the way up the spectrum, just depends how ballin you want it. I looked at a redic condo in bangkok with a crazy view, all modern, door man etc. Was like 300k. Keep in mind, that is top of the market, like that place would have seriously been 2mil+ in NY or SF.

I'm sure out of Bangkok its much cheaper, I've heard of some amazing bargains in Chiang Mai but dont' have much experience.

That said, I'd look long at hard into buying real estate in Thailand before doing it. It is an unstable nation and the financial markets are equally unstable. Its a risky propostion and there are restrictions for foreigners.

www.thaivisa.com has great forums on it if you want to look further into it

I would never drive a car in Thailand and am not sure about licensing. They drive insane, like they have no regard for the lines in the road and basically just drive in such a way as to fit the maximum amount of vehicles and people and tuk tuks and armless beggars all into one space. Thai ppl are pretty good at it and I'm suprised I dont see more accidents, but you'll be amazed at how chaotic the streets are.

I didn't get a license to drive my scooter on the islands, i dont think its necessary.

Techncially you need a license to drive but not really. I was stopped once and I showed the popo my Chicago Drivers license. He looked at it and pretended like he knew what is was and then gave it back to me and rolled out.

One time I just left the bar and I was hauling ass on my motorbike and I got pulled over by a cop at a checkpoint. Had to grease his palm with $5 but I was on my way again shortly there after.

this was the same with me, though they also had a few exhibitions with 8-10 yos (2 i think)...kinda scary but they were great fighters and they weren't allowed to throw elbows to the head, so meh.

alot of poorer northern families will send their kids off to muay thai camps. im not sure how it works, whether they sorta 'sell' them to the camps or if they pay for it (the former sounds more correct, but i can't remember for sure). but anyway, they start fighting when they're very young and get food/accomodation. by the time get are 20 they could very well have had 100s of fights.

My friend got 40 acers on a small island in the south for less then $20,000 and had the house built himself for like $50,000. If you contract all the work yourself you save a ton but it is a lot of work and most people dont want to deal with all of that.

my parents are building a masssssssive house in hua hin (abt 2.5 hours south of bkk....i think, kinda sleepy atm)..like if it was built in aus it would be in the 10s of millions, but its costing them ~1 (estimate). of course, things take alot longer to do, so expect to wait a while if you want to start from scratch.

parents own alot of property in hua hin/cha am and these are developing areas where in the last year property value has gone up 3 fold (not really, but something big). but value drops almost as fast, and you usually sell to farangs who are looking for bargains if you're tryin to get rid of it, so it can be quite a risky proposition.

How sick would this be if you had handed him your Student ID or Library Card instead

So the obvious solutions seems to be this:
Degen buys or builds a giant dorm type setup, we throw in a $500 internet connection, naked thai girls, a pool table, naked thai girls, etc etc, and everyone pays rent from their poker winnings.

I'll invest in that, but I really don't have the time to find a place and set it up.

yeah i remember my stepdad getting pulled over and handing over his german license and the guy couldnt be bothered translating it, so he says 'germany thailand goot friend' and lets him off.

if you really want to, i think getting a license costs like 500 baht and as long as your over 18 you shouldnt have any problems

Take a test?

My friend got a Thai drivers licese, you pay a fee, wait a few hours and then you get a license. Its that easy.

Most street signs are IDENTICAL to usa street signs. The highways were all made my USA engineers so everything is very familiar looking.

Yes this is true as well, which is why I was wondering about the driving thing.

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I'm just trying to get a feel for this because I think I'll be going to thailand in the next 4 months and I think I'll prob be by myself seeing as non of my friends have enough money, or they have to go to class.

Something I was thinking about.. Kid Rock was talking about being a rockstar one time.. and he was like "you don't do it for the music, you do it for the WOMEN... " He was just being blatantly honest, and it was cool..

The funny thing is, with just a little bit of money, you can come to thailand, and be a rockstar for a few months.. lol

Hairs on fingers foot never lie.

That's the ultimate test after the more common ones:

- size of their shoulder: thai ladyboys have large shoulders very often - their voice - hips: they have no hip usually which is one of the reason they have amazing sexy ass. - big nose for the ones who have not enough money to reduce it. - biceps too apparent.

Ladyboys are usually tall and have giant man hands where Thai chicks have nice small hands.

I wonder how many people are serious about comming to Thailand, and how many will seriously stay here for a while to make getting a place togeher more worthwhile.

I really disagree with Farang on the driving issues.

Driving in Thailand is very dangerous IMO. First of all, I don't know if it has been mentioned that they drive on the opposite side of the road.

Traffic rules are not enforced AT ALL. People do whatever they want. Mopeds are travelling on both sides of the road. People run red lights, and I have even seen police officers doing it. Signage is not clear at all like in the US.

IMO most travel is designed for the local traveller who knows the area. You can be travelling a one way road that suddenly becomes two ways, and you will have no warning what so ever.

People do not stay in there own lanes, and cabs go where ever the hell they want.

For your first few times on the road, you will probbaly have to close your eyes. Its that bad. Even thai people are not comfortable wit hthe way people drive.

It is ez to get a drivers license from what I understand.

The good news is, cabs are very cheap, and there's not much of a reason to get a car.

Ladyboys are prostitutes.

Don't pay for sex (or at least not when you are hammered) and you wont have a problem

haha ya, chics really liked that dog.

the one bending over is my friends girlfriends sister. other two are her friends, little get together we had.

that is what normal, student age, classy thai girls look like. stick with those.

This on the other hand is your average run of the mill bar girl.

Because they just want your money. They probably all have husbands already and kids and they've been [censored] by hundreds of dudes and thats just a bad scene.

If they are any good at making dudes like them they probably have several 'boyfriends' around the world who come to see them in Thailand ever year a couple of times and send them retarded emails about how much they love them and miss them yada yada and send them money every month. It's like residual income for these chics to get a 'boyfriend'. Though when you go back home she's banging other dudes.

Go to Koh Sarn road, at the opposite end as Burger King. Take a left and there is a dive shop on the same side of the street as you, before the Sawadee Hotel.

Dave has like 12 internet stations in there all with Party and Stars on them. I played from there for weeks. Great guy too, British. Tell him you know me and he might even invite you to his home games

If you want internet ANYWHERE, then buy a cell phone with bluetooth. Then you can use a laptop to access EDGE internet network. You cant play 12 tables at once but it should be more then enough to play 1 or 2 at a time.

I havent played poker on it but Ive used it for internet and it seemed fast enough.

If you are renting a house then get dsl. If you are staying in hotels/travling then bring a laptop and plug it in at netshops.

When I first came to samui I was playing and working in starbucks for a while.

You wouldn't be going to play online poker, you would be going to be living in Thailand. You'd be playing online poker to fund that lifestyle.

There is more to life than poker.

Degen, how is the golf around there? Also, have you been playing for long?
I play to a 13ish handicap and am addicted to golf (among other things).

It is golf heaven here. There are tons of golf courses around including Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones designed courses etc. The Amata course is where they host some big tournaments and it is the nuts. One hole has an island green that you take a boat out to! Green fees including caddy are from 500baht and up. That is about $13 -$75 ish. It is great having your own caddy, it makes you feel like a pro golfer. hehe.. The caddies are often cute girls too. I recommend Panya Park about an hour from Bangkok city center. I'm going tomorrow morning actually

Check out this site for some good info on courses in thailand:

http://www.thaigolfer.com

ps. Some Driving ranges are very nice here too. All-Star Driving complex and the one at RCA are good.

pps. Killer place to buy golf stuff is in Silom in the Thaniya building. 4 floors of golf stores. All the big names and also used stuff. Epic. Golf kicks ass.

I prefer Singha. Beer chang is usually reserved for farang who are scraping their last bacht out of their pockets. It tastes like ass and gives you a huge hangover.

Heinken is made locally jhere so its not exactly the same as you migh tbe used too.

Thais drink [censored] wisky (rum) which can be purchased very cheap.

The traditional drink while parting is to take a 5th of sangsom and 1 redbull and 1 coke and mike in a bucket of ice. This is called a "bucket" naturally.

I like to goto places that server good beer though (Guiness ) mmmmmm

A Thailand checklist

- Thai street food = everything is fantastic, especially seafood, spicy - tailored suits (a quality armani copy suit + shirt + pants < $150) - fake diesel/D&G/versace/armani exchange/etc shirts everywhere for ~$3 each - almost everything you could buy in the USA + Siam Paragon = larges luxury mall in southeast asia with Chanel/Versace/Gucci/Rolex type stores, has an imax theater and a giant aquarium floor + Emporium = smaller/older version of Paragon + MBK = cheaper stuff (take on the teen thais at LAN counterstrike) + Platinum = clothes

- BTS skytrain and MRT subway to travel around downtown Bangkok = fast - Clubs = Qbar and Club Bedrock - go-go bars = Nana & Soi Cowboy (Dollhouse has naked dancers) - Cabaret Show - transvestite dancers - Golf = world class courses - Thai Massages = amazing, "Foot Massage, Sir?" - Taxis = costs $1-2 to travel long distances - Culture = 95% buddhist, extremely friendly, passive, polite, nice - Weather = 85F daily and sunny (Sept/Oct it rains a bit, Nov-Feb is bit cooler but not much)

- Beaches/Islands = Phuket & Krabi, Kata Beach in Phuket is amazing. Patpong is full of bars and go-go girls, even kickboxing matches. Take the Phi Phi Islands Tour, James Bond Tour, 4 Islands Tour, scuba diving, jetski, snorkel, swim. Use AirAsia.com to travel there for <$40 from Bangkok

- History = Grand Palace (emerald buddha!), Ayutthaya (former capital)

- Muay Thai Kickboxing = "In Bangkok, Lumphini stadium and Ratchadamnoen have matches on alternate days of the week, usually consisting of eight bouts and starting at about 6pm."

- Thai Girls!

Yeah, rentals are no problem. Nicer courses have nicer clubs of course. I have had rental callaways that were pretty sweet. If you are here for any period of time, just put the clubs in luggage. I rock Ping's too - old school Ping Zings.

Hell yeah, I am up to date with that checklist! I finally checked the out Lumpinee fights last tuesday night. I was a bit surprised at the cost though. 2000b for first class. It was worth it though. We saw two killer knockouts.

Was going to Central America from Jan-April, but now you've got me thinking about Thailand. Damn my utter lack of willpower when it comes to girls.

A few questions:

1) Are internet cafes set up so I can use my own laptop?

2) Is it a problem meeting/dating girls if you obviously aren't there for the long haul?

3) Are the girls as approachable in cities other than BKK? (not sure I could handle the noise/pollution/general aggravation of the big city)

4) Is petty theft a problem? Should I only bring stuff that won't it kill me to get stolen? (was thinking about buying a cheap laptop instead of bringing my nice one)

5) Is malaria a problem either in Chiang Mai or in the islands?

6) Is the traffic and pollution as bad in BKK as they say?

Thanks

I'm curious about this too. I took Larium when I was there and it gave me the worst nightmares you could ever imagine. Woke up screaming in a pool of sweat and decided that I'd rather risk malaria than go through that again. I was told by a doctor up there that malaria isn't really a risk unless you're within 5 miles or so from the Burmese border. Is that true?

1. I haven't had any problems using my laptop in various internet cafes. Wireless is available in many locations too. Here's a link to a big list of free Wifi spots in Thailand. http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/wifi.htm

2. I haven't heard of anyone ever having a problem meeting girls in this country.

3. Approachable indeed.

4. Never had a problem, just don't leave anything in a taxi or you'll never see it again. If you somehow remembered the taxi number, you have a chance.

5. Not a problem, but use repellent if mosquitos like you and you are outside during evening hours.

6. It's bad but I don't drive and I know to take the skytrain or subway during peak traffic times. Taxi's at night are usually no problem. Today I was down at Lumpinee park and the air was very nice. Walking to and from the park it was smoggy as hell of course. After it rains it is usually cleaned up for a while.

How is the TV over there? Can you get any western shows? Do they have SKY? In the cheaper hotels you described, do they even have TV's?

Also, let's say I decided to take your advice and just fly there and play it by ear - what's the best way to find a cheap hotel for the first few nights?

Visiting soon, have some specific q's about Bangkok.

Spa: I want to send my parents to a great day spa. I don't know if you or your lady friend has ever been pampered at such a place, and I know there are cheaper places available, but I am looking for insight into either the Banyan Tree Spa or the Oriental's Spa. I know they are 'paeng mak' but this is a gift, so I'm not worried.

Dim Sum: Ever been? Can you recommend a place? I'm willing to go to Chinatown, but anywhere is alright.

-Dim sum is everywhere. The nicer hotels usually have a decent dim sum restaurant

-Hotels with TV's are everywhere

When I lived in the south, one day Honda did this promotion for their motorbikes, I guess they had a new model ome out or something: They took a flatbed type truck with the motorbike on it and had 4 of the hottest thai chicks I have ever seen almost naked and grinding on each other and all over the bike and [censored]. I was driving at the time so I decided to alter my intended route so I could look at the eye candy for a few more blocks.

Hot chicks are all over the place. They are used to promote everything too.

In thailand there are no highering practices. So you can only hire hot chicks, thin chicks, etc. When you place an add in the paper you can specifically say you will only hire beautiful girls and request a photo right away. I think its a great system.

Spa: I want to send my parents to a great day spa. I don't know if you or your lady friend has ever been pampered at such a place, and I know there are cheaper places available, but I am looking for insight into either the Banyan Tree Spa or the Oriental's Spa. I know they are 'paeng mak' but this is a gift, so I'm not worried.

dunno about this or the dim sum, sorry.

   1) Do you guys know of any Americans doing something stupid and getting arrested and put in jail for a long time? I mean doing something stupid as in getting drunk and trying to buy drugs or something along those lines... Not hurting or killing someone or raping a thai girl or something.
Honestly this thread is making me seriously consider taking 3 months and going to Thailand.

cops don't really mess with farang IME. obviously there is variance, but it seems a bit like vegas where the tourists just kinda do what they want.

   Okay, a couple more questions:
How is the TV over there? Can you get any western shows? Do they have SKY? In the cheaper hotels you described, do they even have TV's?
Also, let's say I decided to take your advice and just fly there and play it by ear - what's the best way to find a cheap hotel for the first few nights?

TV is not so great. I just DL'd stuff. There are also tons of cheap pirated DVD's all over the streets so i watch a ton of movies over there.

Hotels usually have some form of small crappy TV, yes. Internet is pretty rare though.

Easiest spot for cheap hotel would be to just tell the taxi at the airport to take you to Koh Sarn road. That is backpacker mecca. You will grow to hate it, but on your first night there it is pretty good spot. Tons of cheap hotels, horny farang girls, dive bars, shopping, places to eat etc etc.

From there you can learn more about the city, take taxi's around etc, then find a better spot if you wish to stay in Bangkok.

The other area's i'd reccomend staying don't have such a young and social vibe to them and it might be kinda lame if you just showed up and got a hotel first night.

One thing though, I want to be able to play poker on my laptop but if I bring my laptop I can't do the backpacking around the islands and whatnot without leaving my laptop somewhere or carrying it with me which wouldn't be that fun.

So I dunno, should I bring my laptop and leave it somewhere, I mean you are the master advice giver, how will I do this?

I backpacked with my laptop for several months. You can secure it places.

I have UBC sat tv and get HBO and [censored] like that but I dont really watch tv. There is a decent amount of stuff to keep me busy without it.

Pirated dvd's are awesome. $2.50 for a dvd. Same for software, etc.

Some people travel here with kids and babies but I dont see the point. Thailand doesnt have much entertainment directed at children so I dont know what they would do.

I brought my laptop first trip. I mean on the few occasions I got to use it, it was awesome. But most of the time its just an unnecessary massive piece of luggage, and you will pick up tons more luggage as you'll want to buy tons of clothes and stuff.

Ya I was thinking about this. Mainly wanting to have laptop with me if I want to get in some hands, but probably I wont get in any hands. I mean, how many hands did you get in the first trip you took, or where you even planning on playing any poker?

My plan was to play 30k hands but I guess that could be done at an internet cafÈ, but pretty grindish 4 tabling without my DB/PAhud and stuff?

I can stay on the road indefinitely as long as I make enough online to pay my way, so would likely end up bringing the extra massive piece of luggage.

BTW: The idiot who's your new avatar is one of my Senators. I can't wait to get out of this place.
