lol don't mind KKF, he's jaded

thai families, IME, think positively on having a foreigner come into their family. they like the idea that you might provide well for their daughter and your children, and also as thai children care for their parents (as opposed to our culture where our parents care for us) they want her to be with somebody who can help to provide for them.

as long as you are not with the wrong type of girl, and you like her family and know and are comfortable with this...

that said, i've never gotten that far into it, maybe somebody i will be old and jaded and wise too

well, i use the term white loosely, and i don't mean to offend anybody who is not white.

Farang is the thai word for it. It means Foreigner and is applied loosely to most people who are not from thailand.

Basically they look up to those who are not from Thailand who come to Thailand to spend money. They are such a poor country and have such a poor culture that they are just a bit fascinated by us I guess.

The one caveat to that is that some don't like black ppl

You cannot 'move' there really, at least not so far as the gov't is concerned. You'll be a tourist there forever.

Thailand is known as a haven for criminals wanted in other countries, so I'd imagine you wouldn't have much trouble...though I don't know specifically what the laws are on that.

If you are an American citizen you owe taxes on worldwide income. That said if you live in Thailand (or anywhere) you can qualify for an $80k per year exemption. Consult a tax professional for more info.

haha ya www.stickmanbangkok.com and other sites have been saying there are gonnna be a bunch of marriages now because of the new tighter visa rules.

dunno i just take a mandatory vacation every three months and its not a big deal.

you can pay $25k and become a member of Thailand Elite and get a 5 year visa and conceirge service from the airport.

it all comes down to money, if you have it, you can do whatever you want. if you don't, things might be harder.

Presumably it pisses you off in America because there's all that competition that you have to stack up against; either that or being into money just to make you more comfortable instead of escaping noble poverty just doesn't seem as cool. Seems pretty straightforward.

I was just wondering how much of what they find attractive in white people is $$$ and how much is looks, personality, diversity, whatever.

Is seems weird to me that they want to have sex with you when I would think they know full well they have almost no chance of coming back to your home country with you.

Also thanks a lot for the info everyone. I'm getting really excited about going.

Until you get over this western way of thinking, you simply will not be happy in a relationship with a thai woman. You can bang them to your hearts content and all of that, but you will never truly be able to be content and understand her and her family etc.

It isn't about $$$. It is about security and providing for your family and making your parents proud and saving face and a ton of other things. Yes money is a factor, but to word it that way and put that sort of a label on it is unfair to them and ultimately, to yourself.

1. I'm really just looking at the objectively. If I felt strongly western thinking was right I wouldn't be going

2. Everything else you said makes a lot of sense. Even if she is pretty sure she is not going to be your wife, it still looks good on her to be with a guy who is very successful and desireable in the eyes of her culture. Plus theres always that chance in her eyes..

DEGEN, THIS THREAD IS AWESOME. TELL US ABOUT THE ORGIES.

First I need to explain the Go-Go bar industry.

So they have go-go bars all over, in most major cities. It is sort of like a club mixed with a strip club mixed with a whore house, but different.

You go in and its dimly lit and they have a stage with poles on it. Some places are huge but the standard is like 20 girls and 4 poles. You order drinks and chill. Lotta guys just go there and look at the girls. They are usually in bathing suits or some sort of sexy outfit, rarely naked.

They have numbers on their tops like cattle. A mamasan comes over to you and asks you if you like any of the girls, if you do, you tell her the number. They bring the girl over to you and she sits down.

She is always 19 and has always only been working in the bar for one month and she is always a student. This is almost always bull [censored], but its fun.

So you can pay like $15 and take the girl home with you. Beyond that you pay them for their services, usually $25-50 depending on how long she stays, how much you like her, what bar, how hot she is etc.

So ya, it is fairly common in some circles to go to these bars in groups and pay the 'barfine' on a bunch of chics, take them all back to your place and bang their [censored] brains out.

I've seen pictures and video's of up to 19 people (5 guys, 14 girls) and have taken part in up to 6 people (4 and 2). 4 is a fairly common occurance, 3 is like getting breakfast...if you so desire.

The chics are cool with this, it is insanely cheap. Ya, thats pretty much it. Searching for pics...

My perspective is different from Bills. I married a Thai woman while I was in grad school, and we are here living in Chiang mai. So, I'm not after the baller lifestyle.

As I mentioned in another thread, I was electrocuted, or experienced electric shock, the other day while I was in my own shower. So, while things are cheap in thailand, you always have to keep some things in mind.. They're cutting corners where ever they can, and people aren't making sh*t for money. So, while I'm here, I'm pretty cautious, and when I'm out I usually throw people an extra buck or two, and that totally makes there day.

As far as my lifestyle goes, I live in a huge beautiful house in a great neighborhood. we paid cash for the house, I won't say how much, but let's just say i'm a sh*tty poker player ( a winning one, but i still suck),and I could still afford to do that. I have a woman in my neighborhood that delivers me food each day for about $1 each time, as well as a woman who comes to my house and gives me a massage for $2.50 an hour.

Yes, the women are absolutely beautiful, and its ez for any "farang" to score one.

If anyone would like to ask me questions in this thread feel free.

I don't think everyone is understanding a fundamental point here. I've never been to Thailand, I have however been to various other 3rd world countries. These people completely idolize Americans. All they see on TV is beautiful, rich, and happy Americans. For them to meet us (Americans)is almost like meeting a celebrity. I think this is what is happening to Degan in Thailand. It's not neccessarily that he is white, I think it is more so that he is 'American'. At least thats the way it was for me in India and Malaysia.

ahh yes, the dive shop culture.

anybody into this type of stuff checkout Koh Tao. They have this one area where you seriously don't see Thai ppl that aren't like cleaning things. All the workers and business owners are European, Australian, Canadia, American etc. Great culture. Lotta fun.

OMFG...

Here is how it works on planet earth....

Girls like guys that are handsome and they like guys that have money among other things.

If you meet these characteristics, than women will like you.

In Thailand, there are poor people who want to marry a farang because they like money. Amazingly, the same thing happens in America!! Who would have thought???

If you are 18 years old and have a six pack, than girls will like you more than a fat bald guy, unless the only thing she cares about is money inwhich case your looks dont matter and she probably perfers old guys because they cum faster.

trying to say all thai girls think this, or do that is not possible. Deg has given you numerous examples, both of well off rich girls, and of prostitutes. What else is it about thai girls that you want to know?

just reading some of the stuff you guys are asking, you guys are going to be FRESH MEAT for some hungry prostitutes!

actually not the best

best time is november, december, jan, feb. after that starts to get unbearably hot.

before anybody think about moving there, i'd say take a trip. spend a month over there. worse case scenario you have a trip you'll remember for the rest of your life. best case, you might find a new home.

1. How much do plane tickets costs to go there?

2. I'm assuming that one can go there for 3 months at a time? Is it possible to rent balla mansions by the month?

3. (most important q) As you know, I'm not white, but I'm American. WILL I HAVE ANY PROBLEMS GETTING LIKE 5 GFS???

ps: PokerFink, Alex Levin, and I are going to Thailand for a while in 2008 after WSOP.

Degen,

1) I know about the 80K tax exemption, but what about taxes to Thailand? Are there any? If not, you basically get 80K of free income per year?

2) Are there any B&M casinos or poker there?

KKF,

My girlfriend has a very close brother, i came over to her house one day and they were in bed together. he got up really quick and put on his clothes and then asked me if i could buy him a new scooter, he said that their mom is very sick and they need it. should i buy it for him? i already gave him $20 yesterday to buy whiskey and condoms, he has some girl that he's always going to see, but i've never seen her. wtf?

hey all,

for those of you not in the 'know' (probably everyone save maybe KKF) I'm half thai, born in chaing mai in northern thailand...not trying to take over degen's thread here *though im cut i wasnt invited * but i hope i can help with some of the cultural issues..

someone asked abt how similar countries like thailand, the philippines and vietnam are, and as i've lived in thailand and the phils for extended periods of time and visited vietnam, i feel qualified to comment. my father met my mother when he was a DEA special agent in chaing mai (part of the golden triangle of drug trade), and was later head of the DEA in the philippines and in charge of training their narcotics agents. my parents got divorced, and both remarried (my mom to a german man and my dad to a filipina). i currently live in Australia, but have lived in Manila, BKK, Chaing Mai and Phuket.

Anyway;

vietnam was/is by far the most impovrished of the three, and because of the socialist gov't, there were quite a few oddities like university professors taking jobs as tour guides for better pay, etc. that said, the country is beautiful and the people are gorgeous - very similar to the thais in attitude, but alittle more 'chinese', both in appearance and character.

the philippines is different altogether - its more 'european'(?) for lack of a better word. i mean its still an asian country, but for one thing, everyone - even the homeless on the street - speak english. its also a very roman-catholic country and is therefore quite conservative. not that this changes anything, cuz there are still bar girls aplenty, im just trying to emphasize that its not thailand.

anywhoo, on to thailand

everything that KKF and Degen have told you all so far is by and large true. i feel i should point out (my mother is of the thai upperclass - i mean she was a classmate of the princess at uni and many of her friends were/are ladies in waiting. she was also the only one in her family to marry a foreigner (or two), everyone else having married well-off thais) that thailand can still be very class-based. depending on where you go, you'll see several things like poorer people not looking richer thais in the eye, bowing their heads, or with maids - if they're in the same room the maids are sitting on the floor. now this is somewhat out of date but if you travel to somewhat-rural areas you'll still see this. i think this is what accounts for the 'politeness' of many thais - its been a part of the culture for many years to be subserviant to those who are superior (and with many of the poorer thais, thats what white people are, but this isnt as common with the upperclass who see themselves on equal footing as the whites).

also there is alot of stigma attached to bargirls, so if you plan on living there and mixing with any form of thai society outside of bars, expect some attitude. oh another thing - the isaan ladies can be verrry good looking, but are usually darkskinned (as are many of the bargirls). this is also looked down upon, they consider people with darkskin to be of the poorer classes, so fair skinned thais and mixbreeds are envied (lucky me) - you'll probably notice many of the actors/models in thailand are this sort of thai, either mixed or fairskinned ie some chinese ancestory.

in response to the guy that got busted with weed in northern thailand - not a good idea to carry weed around in northern thailand! if you want to smoke do it in BKK (and dont bring it in to the country for gosh sake) or in the south, where the police are more lax about this. i know that they still have random inspections of (for eg) trains in the north that are heading to BKK, so be wary. most of the stoners in thailand have migrated south. koh samui (i think, i honestly can't remember which island it was exactly) is a good example of this, people (farang and thai alike) will spark up a joint after dinner like you'd expect to see people sparking up cigis, seeing as there is no regular police stationed on the island. also amphetamines are used alot, security guards will often resort to this on late nights.

ok i think i've rambled enough, but if anyone has any questions, i'll be happy to help.

-pug

PS im gonna be in BKK for a few days in late november before heading to the states, then a few days in early feb on the way back to aus, if anyone's gonna be there.

Air Tix can be bought here : VERY Cheap Tickets

The tickets here are $700 round trip from a lot of places in US, and this is on the best air carrier, Cathay Air.

I'm paying $740 roundtrip for the one I got in November. If you go on short notice or at peak season, it can go a bit over $1k. $650 will be about the cheapest you can ever find it. www.gatewaylax.com is a pretty good site, thats who i use

Are you wanting to travel around or stay in one place? I'd reccomend playing from laptops and internet cafe's and traveling around for awhile, and maybe the whole three months. You can go for three months, or longer, yes. Just have to adequately prepare first.

I think you mean 2007, but sweet. Going with a group of close friends is the nutty nuts.

November 1st-20th I'm going with my three best friends that I went to UCSB with. I'm 26 now, after college and when people get into their lives, its pretty damned rare for people to clear they schedules for something like that. I'm stoked, should be a lot of fun.

No, gambling is illegal. I've heard of an underground low stakes card club in Pattaya, but thats about it.

There is an APT (Asian Poker Tour) event and some casino's in Singapore.

SEE GUYS...THERE ARE OTHER THINGS IN THAILAND TO DO BESIDES HAVE SEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a scuba course on Koh Tao. Amazing experience. There are english courses all over the place. I'd checkout www.ajarn.com (the forums) for the other schools.

I would think learning from Thai people would be an amazing experience, as they are very nice and warm and have a very positive reaction when you try to learn things about them and their culture.

I might even be up for one of these classes, particularly Thai Massage or a Language Course.

I've never had thai food, but I love chinese food and I'm ok with japanese food. How similar are they? Thai food is very spicy, right? Keep in mind I mean American "chinese" food.

You said there isn't really American food in Thailand, but what about chinese/japanese food in Thailand? If so, is it similar to what's here, or more like real ethnic chinese food? If that makes sense.

I'm also guessing that you eat a lot of seafood?

the seafood is amazing, far better than in america.

its kinda hard to describe thai food if you haven't had it. some stuff is gonna seem very weird to you...like a whole fish cooked and set on a plate. you got the head and the eyeballs and all the skin etc. you just cut it open and eat it.

i love it, go to a thai restaurant to try it out. The Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas is a pretty amazing Thai restaurant and is as close to authentic as I've seen in the states

Nation, to be honest, being Indian may be something of a strike against you, although I'm not sure. It should easily be countered by speaking english, and having money.

Bruiser, u should be able to do all of those things that you listed. I've met many farang's who have studied muay thai while here.

As far as the cooking and massage goes, you may think about just hiring a private instructor. I'm sure you could hire those for $20 a day, but i'm not sure about communicating with them.

One thing I would recommend for you, is that you learn a little thai. Get the Book and CD from Benjawan Poonsam Becker "Thai For Beginners." You can put the CD on your Ipod and learn a little but each day.

To be honest, I'm a little tired of the food. You're always eating chicken or pork, just prepared a little differently. I mean, Thai food is great, I'm just getting a little tired of it. Although this chef that I have working for me here in this neighborhood is amazing.

Degen's right, the seafood is great. Very fresh. If you like shrimp and calamari, this is the place. But I still miss my american fried clams and Maine lobster, something Degen prolly hasn't experienced much of.

Degen, where are the good places to study muay thai??? I'm wondering if BKK is better than Chiang Mai.

Daryn, the good part about meeting the women isn't just the fact that you can get laid any time u want.. Its meeting a woman from another culture who has a different view of what it means to be in a relationship. someone who is willing to give more of themselves to make you happy..

Pug, where'd u live in Chiang Mai? that is where I am staying now.

Who is KKF posting as now?

One other thing. You can get pure bred dogs here really cheap. I got a Golden retriever for $65, and that was paying a lot. If you go to the dog market you can pay like $40.

One thing that's kind of annoying about thai culture is that people are always asking how much you make/how much you paid for something.. "Tao Rai" means how much. I always hear my wife's family member's saying this crap. For those of you just visiting, it should't be an issue.

First, I like the fact that this thread is growing about as fast as I can read it. Best OOT thread I've seen in a long time, and although I don't post I'm a religious lurker, thanks a million Degen. Makes me want to visit for a month or two, especially considering the cost.

I have come up with a few questions as I read through, but since I'm unmotivated I didn't write them down. I would have remembered them, except I'm a recovering pothead and I'm a bit drunk at the moment.

My closing comment is that I find it pissyourpants hilarious that at the moment, the bargirls.com site is experiencing difficulties due to excessive bandwidth.

By no means does this mean that I have tried to peep this site, and I know that none of 2p2 has either.

viva la biba, and go thailand

Hey, there's the adventurous bruiser I remember from a post asking what to do with his life a few months back. Cool -- there world is way too full of cool things to be bored, especially with the kind of access poker money affords you.

PokerFink,

You will find very authentic chinese food. In fact, a lot of Thai's are of chinese descent, and take pride in that.

I'm not really sure about Japanese food. I eat at a chain restaurant called "Fuji" and its really good food, i'm just not sure about authenticity.

ill feild it - generally speaking chinese and thai are similar but different. while the chinese use lots of noodles in their cooking, thais use more rice..however there are plenty of dishes that are similar (lots of the stir frys for eg). if your not into hot food, but like chinese, you'll probably find most of the thai noodle dishes to your likeing.

if i had to describe thai food generally, i would say its sort of a cross between chinese, malay and indian food, but its not really similar to any one of those in particular.

someone asked abt whether or not you should worry abt islam in thailand - i would say NO. i lived a good amount of time in the south (where a the majority of the thai-islamic population is found) and have never had any issues, as most thai-islamics are only loosely islamic and despite news to the contrary, you'd be hard pressed to find any radicals living in thailand - more likely they live would be based in malaysia but of thai origin or whatever.

southerndog, its never been an issue for me, though politically i'd have to agree. again, my family lives there and i see nothing that affects day to day life.

i dont actually remember where i lived, it was near that university, and it was a big mango farm...also near some sort fish farm. i lived there from when i was born till around 4, and we're renting the place out atm. many good memories of chaing mai, but i havenet been in ages.

edit: i think it was near maejo university (at least i remember we had to go through maejo at some point), and it was around 20k outside of the city. also, there was this awesome italian place, run by an old gent who insisted everyone call him granpapa (he was italian married to a thai i think).. hope its still around.. (this wasnt near the house, just a random memory)

Edited second time for attempted clarity

Edit #3 Found the restaurant i think

'Piccola Roma Palace Italian Restaurant, at corner of Charoenprathet Road & Sri Donchai Road near Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel +66 53-820297 / +66 53-271256 - open lunch & dinner. An unforgettable dining experience amid beautiful surroundings. Serving residents over 15 years.'

travel around man, then find a spot you like.

nobody should move to thailand without ever having been there. i love it. many people love it. some people hate it. the third world sucks sometimes. you will either learn to love it or yearn for home.

so go there, arrive in bangkok, stay in a $10 a night hotel and check things out. then go to the islands. [censored] some hot isreali chics and get really really drunk. go to a full moon party and take some e. go to koh tao and learn to scuba dive.

along the way you might meet some cool people and do some other random stuff, maybe you'll go to Cambodia and Angkor Wat, who knows.

IMHO it would be silly to book a place to live before you go. it is rediculously cheap to live out of hotels and you do not need a car. just go.

I haven't been there since June. I heard tonite that somebody cannot access Party at all right now. KKF is this accurate?

When I was there last we had to use a proxy server to access Neteller and PartyPoker. We could play on PartyPoker but we couldn't deposit or cashout.

I am certain there is some kind of workaround where I'll be able to play when I go back, and yes I'll be playing.

Guys, I think there are some issues with using Neteller and party in Thailand. For cashout issues and other banking matters, it may be best to have someone in the states you trust that can handle these things. Just realize you can travel here with $10k legally which would be a TON of money to have for a visit.

I am married to a Thai woman, so we have a bank account and stuff, and we are able to transfer $$ from the US.

Have you heard about the new policy about the visa on arrival ? It basically say that they will not issue more that 3 30 days visa with the borders run within a period of six months. So you cannot stay more than 90 days in Thailand this way in a a 6 month period. It was the way to go for the long-time tourits to stay in Thailand and it seem like it will not work anymore. You can apply for a 90 days tourist visa from out of the country, but nobody seem to know if they will issue them more than one time in a six month period. It concern me a little because I'm leaving for Thailand in one week and I was planning to stay there until mid-winter.

lol just break up with her. it isn't 'cool' to have multiple girlfriends in the sense that like you'll all have dinner together. if one of them found out about each other she would be very upset. it is just that it is much more accepted there than it is in america. here it is like instant breakup and a huge ordeal...there the chic would most likely cry and that would be that.

IMO, the way Thailand handles visas isn't optimal.

Here's an underdeveloped country with people wanting to visit and spend their money OR work here and help people learn english. In return, they make it a MAJOR pain in the ballz. I am married to a thai woman, and I have to go through a big friggen hassle to stay here. I believe if I get a work visa or show them that I have money in a bank account, I am ok, but overall their process makes a lot of people unhappy.

i don't use thai banks for this stuff. gambling is illegal there, i'm sure it wouldn't be cool.

with the unstable nature of the Thai Baht, i wouldn't reccomend storing lots of money there.

You can get a 'passport savings account' at some thai banks, i have one of these, but its generally useless. you don't get interest, you can't do anything w/out going into the bank w/ your passport etc. i just have it as a fail safe in case i woke up naked one day on a beach or something, and everything i had was stolen etc

Just a note - doing this sort of thing from a foreign country as long as you have access to a machine in the US is truly trivial. There are probably some legal issues, but with enough anonymizing you can get past them just fine. Someone who can ensure that you have a PC on US soil may well be enough, but if you can trust someone enough to have them do your actual banking that's certainly an option.

I think Thai women are fairly dramatic, and breaking up with them will not be easy.

In the thai news, all of the time you hear stories about so and so killing themselves or someone over relationships etc. It makes the news, and turns them into martyrs. Bill may not be aware of this cause its usually in the Thai language and he may not hear about it. The women see all of this, and it fuels the fire.

I was under the impression that all the gov't was trying to accomplish was to keep out the srub's who had been using the border run service to live in thailand for years on $500 a month.

I had this information on thaivisa.com. But, If you can fly to a close asian foreign embassy and renew indefinitely your 90 tourist vise there is no problem at all, it will only cost a little bit more to stay in Thailand. Also, theres always this option : www.thailandelite.com or the investor visa.

degen - i believe southerndog is right, having several girlfriends could lead to something very dramatic. of course it depends on the type of girl - if shes something akin to a bargirl (not actually a hooker say, but hangs out in bars for gifts) and you've been seeing her regularly, no problem. ditto if they know you're a farang looking for some fun, but if its in anyway serious ala southerndog, you could be missing a penis if/when they find out.

by the same token, alot of older thai businessmen have mistresses that their wives sort of know abt and thats generally ok..

Do you know a good tailor who could make me a quality custom suit? I imagine it would be the price of a good off-the-rack suit instead of the $5kish it would cost anywhere else. I'm a little short for an American so it probably wouldn't be that out of the ordinary for him.

Have you tried to learn Thai?

I know it is not easy but you can get a hang of it. The grammar is super easy. I learned quite a bit having a college student come to my place about once a week to tutor me. Along with going through instruction books on my own and making flash cards. And my main Thai buddy and I would only speak Thai to each other for the most part, which helped a lot.

You will get a lot of respect from Thais if you make an effort to learn it. You will also eat much much better if you learn how to read menus in Thai so you are not limited in where you can go eat. And also learn directions so you can ask anyone how to get somewhere if you are lost.

Sure you will not be able to analyze things with folks but in my opinion if you are going to be a guest in a country, you should learn the language instead of expecting everyone to speak yours. I am not saying that is what you have done, but I knew a lot of other expats who made no effort whatsoever and I think their experience was much less rich, culturally speaking, than those of us who learned Thai.

Looks like I am late to the party. 12 pages...damn.

Just got back from my visa run (Koh samui - Malaysia - Samui) 12 hours in a minivan but not too bad I guess.

KJS is correct: If you make an effort to learn thai then Thailand is sooo much nicer. I have a decent vocab building up and get a lot more respect now that I can communicate on my own.

OK serious question here.

When you rent a motorbike if it says "full insurance" and I pop a tire, is that covered or does it mean insurance if I run someone over? Because I rented a bike and got a flat. The place I rented it from is closed so I can't ask. Am I going to get owned by a huge fine here? Should I get it fixed before I return it? Is the rental place going to try to rip me off (Pop's something in Chiang Mai). Do they have that fix-a-flat [censored] in a can here? Where should I go?

An answer by 10am Thailand time would really kick ass here.

Actually, looking at the clock just now they might all be closed. You can get it fixed in the morning or just return the bike with the flat. When you return the bike they might not make you pay anything if you complain that their bike was a piece of [censored] and almost killed you. If anything pay them 100 baht and leave it at that.

"suits" can be had for a couple hundred up to $1,000 for high end tailors in Hong Kong. But there are various quality levels in materials, tailors, etc. my buddy just got back from Hong Kong and got custom made shirts for $90ish each. This sounds expensive, but they were made by some of the best tailors in the world.

if you want to get a lot cheaper, you can.

2+2 mansion would be awesome. It would probably come to like 250US per person per month for a super balla house.

I really want to live in Chiang Mai for a while and play poker. (not a balla though, would have to live cheap)

Also, I only read the first few pages of this thread but I saw some questions regarding the costs of living in Thailand.

Degen mentioned that for 2-3k you can live nicely in Thialand, but this is really high end. You can actually live nicely for around $500 a month depending on how much you party. My general expenses are about $400 a month (rent, untilites, food) and then from there you just factor in beer money etc

farang is right. I know some people here in Chiang Mai who are living nice off about US450 a month. If I come back to live and play poker I'll be planning on living off a grand a month or so.

If I come back it will be after tax season. As of right now I really want to do it. Hopefully the current visa situation changes

IMO, a 2+2 pad would be a bad idea.

Being well off in thailand is a big deal. Your neighbors will want to know about you, etc.. Drawing a lot of attention while playing internet poker doesn't seem like a great idea.

$90 for custom shirts is a bargain. I have a small obsession with custom suits due to reading a multi-page ad in GQ the last time I was at the doctor's office. You choose the material and every detail of the cut, then they take something like 40 measurements and assemble the suit. Then several weeks later, you try it on and the make more alterations. You try it on again and they make a final round of alterations before you actually get it. It looks better, fits better, and offers a better range of motion than even, say, a tailored Armani suit or anything comparable.

OK, there's a difference between "Balla" and living nicely.

I agree that one could live very comfortably off $1k/month. I'm not really sure what baller would be though. One thing to realize is that buying a car is VERY expensive over here. Almost all cars are 20k+ and driving a 4 cylinder honda isn't baller. A Benz will cost you +$100K, and if you're only living for a year, it will be a bad idea.

there are houses for rent in my neighborhood for $500 that are VERY nice. They are probably 4k sq foot or so.

just keep in mind that tailors are like 7-11's in Hong Kong. there are various quality levels and levels of competence, and corresponding price differences, between them. ie not all $90 custom made shirts are equal to one another.

Farang have cash anyways and thais just understand that white people will come and live in their country, spend tons of cash, and not do any work. A bunch of farang living together and having a good time will not look out of the ordinary. As long as your not being an ass and flashing cash around you will be fine.

Also, my favorite thing about living in Thailand: 80 THOUSAND DOLLAR TAX BREAK EACH YEAR - SHIP IT (Must live outside of usa for 11 months a year to qualify)

But some people cant handle 11 months outside of the USA. personally 30 days in the USA is more then enough for me to leave for 11 more months

Degen, first, thanks for doing this.

My wife and I have been to Thailand last year and have been absolutely in love with that country ever since. We also thought of moving there, but we're not certain, yet.

Now, maybe you can answer a few remaining questions (I haven't read all of the posts, just the first 6 pages, so excuse me if I'm asking double):

1) You mentioned you'll get locked out for 90 days after the third extension (total time in Thailand 90 days). Are there any ways to get around this, without getting into serious trouble (talking bribes, "favours", etc.)?

2) Isn't gambling illegal in Thailand? How do you conceal that you're earning your $$ by playing poker? Have you ever heard of anyone getting into trouble due to that?

3) If we should decide to move there, I'd like to contact you and a few other poker farangs over there. Is that okay with you? Or is your mailbox already filled with "hi i'm moving to thailand" messages?

Thanks again for this thread.

Bill:

QUESTION ONE: How hard would it be to find teen asian girls to slap me around and how much would it cost (i.e. no sex or nudity........just violence)

QUESTION TWO: The cost of living sure as hell beats what we were looking at in North Carolina. But my wife isn't too keen on the possibility of living overseas. What might entice her to give Thailand a try?

QUESTION THREE: I'm pretty picky about food, but like the simple stuff. Hamburgers, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, french fries. I cannot stand seafood, not even fish sticks. How hard will it be for me to have a simple meal like I've described (capable of preparing myself if the food can be purchased)

(edited to add question three)

Is there a reason a vacation to Thailand is out of the question? Or is that the plan once the wife becomes more amenable to the idea? It just seems weird that your wife would be so hostile to the idea that she wouldn't even want to vacation there, but you think Degen can come up with something that will convince her.

Well, she knows I've got this thing for asian chicks, but I haven't been overly impressed by the pics I've seen of Thai women thus far (i.e. I'd be more inclined towards Japanese women)

I might be able to convince her to vacation. But should I really enjoy it down there and consider moving, what things might help entice my wife to also consider Thailand (i.e. what places should I take her, or what should I show her to make her fall in love with the place)

Great thread, thanks to everyone helping out. I was supposed to go earlier this month but my cousin backed out. Now I'm tryin to figure out what's next, more and more the plan seems like it should be 'buy ticket, details later'.

1. The specific penalties if you were caught gambling online, say in a cafe?

2. It was mentioned earlier drugs such as paxil are common, do you need a prescription from a local or are they otc? Does this include adderall or other amphetamines?

3. Any personal experiences with the recent coup? Was it similar to how it was reported in the U.S. media? Any worries about it in the future?

4. In regards to the 80k/yr tax exemption, it seems there would be a potential problem. If you report you are in Thailand playing poker yet gambling is illegal there, how does the IRS view this?

Also, I would be interested in any kind of 'baller mansion' project, especially if it was on one of the islands right on the beach. PM if any interest

Oy vey, exaggerated. I take a set percentage from her check each week because I'm responsible for paying ALL the bills that come in.

She gets to have some money that is "hers" that she can spend however she wishes, and her monetary contribution towards the bills is not even close to covering 50% of expenses, so I think I'm more than fair.

I'm not a tax attorney, a CPA, or any of that. That being said...

I've got a good friend that lives in Argentina, and he's never mentioned it being a problem. It seems intuitive to me that the IRS wouldn't go to the trouble of figuring out the legal status of online poker in every jurisdiction on earth, and then, when deemed illegal, narc you out to local authorities.

If you were worried about something other than trouble from the Thai government, what would it be, when we're talking about the IRS reading "online poker" on your return? Whether, as an illegal activity in the local jurisdiction, its not exempt?

fwiw, I know my friend got his return from his first year, no problems. I do not know how he reported his income, only that he reported it.

I don't think the IRS will care. I actually think with the IRS you report everything regardless of its legality. I think drug dealers are actually supposed to report.

My understanding is that you'd list yourself as a "professional gambler" since "online poker" is still a gray area in the U.S.

Plus, the I.R.S. doesn't care about the rules of Thailand, so long as you're sending them money they're happy.

Also, I'm sure there are ways around things in Thailand (i.e. you could be an "internet entreprenuer" or something, or an "online consultant" without spelling out you're playing poker)

Which leads me to another question. Do you drink the water and have ice in your drinks there? I ate food from street vendors and never got sick. But I went to the Hard Rock in Bangkok one night and, without thinking, had the lettuce on my burger and ended up spending a night in the hospital. Does your body get used to the water, and can you eventually eat raw fruits and vegetables without fear of getting ill?

it's a good point, and someone said above "if you fear street vendors, Thailand isn't for you".

while this may be true, consider:

I ate ceviche in Costa Rica one time, got food poisoning, couldn't digest any food for a week, lost 15 pounds.

I ate a chicken sandwich from a street vendor in Egypt once, was violently ill for 3 days.

now, am I "afraid" of street vendors when I travel? in certain places, yeah. this doesn't stop me from going to those places, but it certainly causes me to buy bottled water, beware of certain vegetables, etc...while I like being adventurous with food, I'd rather not get really sick.

I've had the sh*ts about 5 or 6 different times, and in different levels of severity.

No one here drinks the water. Its always bottled.

I've heard there is one area where they are trying to treat the water so it is drinkable.

Nice thread Degen. Looks like you'll be back after I leave so I won't get to school you on the golf course hehe..

Anyway, here's my two baht:

I've been living here in Thailand for 2 years now. It's been fun. Nightlife is off the hook. There are huge clubs in RCA and all kinds of stuff to do. Movie theaters are excellent. Gold class theaters are unforgettable and have totally ruined any theaters in San Francisco for me! LOL.. The cost of living is great. I've saved money, golfed like 50 times this year, had massages once a week, live in a upscale condo in downtown Bangkok with a park view and have traveled all over the country. There are a lot of good things about being in the country even if you have to do visa runs and deal with downsides like pollution and other dirtyness. Overall the plusses outweigh the minuses. I do miss the redwoods and fresh air but I also admit that I spend most of my time in the City.

I have been coming here on and off for 6 years and things have changed quite a bit. Bar closing time is 1am these days in most areas. Visa rules seem to be up in the air and possibly getting more restrictive. thaivisa.com has tons of info on that. Looks like there are ways around it if you just get a tourist visa and then do a few border runs etc.

If anyone is considering taking the long trip. DO IT. Read up on StickmanBangkok.com for some good info too. Party with Degen in BKK... priceless!

The Tailor's are great. PM me when you get over there and I can give you a reference to mine.

A good custom made suit shouldn't cost you more than $100. Custom made cotton shirts shouldn't cost over $15

Custom made is probably the wrong term, but ya. They are all over, just don't get ripped off.

Being well off in thailand is a big deal. Your neighbors will want to know about you, etc.. Drawing a lot of attention while playing internet poker doesn't seem like a great idea.

This is easily avoided by living around other people who are well off.

Never been, don't know much about it. I've heard good things however. On Koh Samui they have them almost nightly, I know because of the trucks that go up and down the streets blaring:
'THAI BOXING, TOOOONIIIIIIITTTTTEEEE AT CHAAAWEEENNGGG STADIUM!!'

I went to one in a bar in Chaing Mai and it was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. In between fights that had a sadist come out and do [censored] like light himself on fire, slice his tongue with a razor blade, drink gasoline, etc. Good times, good times.

Side note - I also got pwned by a 12 year old pool hustler there who beat me 3 out of 3 games for a total of 1000 baht.

Try some soups.

Tom Yum Goon is a good one. Spicy shrimp soup.

I really also like Rad Na, and as mentioned, pretty much any seafood dish is gonna be great.

I have answered this in this thread multiple times already.

   2) Isn't gambling illegal in Thailand? How do you conceal that you're earning your $$ by playing poker? Have you ever heard of anyone getting into trouble due to that?

Have also answered this in depth, no I haven't heard of anybody getting in trouble.

   3) If we should decide to move there, I'd like to contact you and a few other poker farangs over there. Is that okay with you? Or is your mailbox already filled with "hi i'm moving to thailand" messages?

It would be great. I've yet to meet a 2+2er in Thailand that wasn't a grade A human being.

I setup a private forum here where we can plan trips, deal with visa issues, post pictures...whatever.

QUESTION ONE: How hard would it be to find teen asian girls to slap me around and how much would it cost (i.e. no sex or nudity........just violence)

It would be much easier to find ones who you could slap around, but I can imagine it wouldn't be hard if you were willing to pay.

Thai women are not usually very agressive.

   Quote:

QUESTION TWO: The cost of living sure as hell beats what we were looking at in North Carolina. But my wife isn't too keen on the possibility of living overseas. What might entice her to give Thailand a try?

Take a three week trip. It will cost $2k max for the two of you in travel/lodging/food expenses, along with lots of new clothes and home decore.

The islands are better than Hawaii IMO. I can't imagine she'd have a bad time over there. Though I could see her not wanting to move (not specifically 'her' not wanting to, but i could see some people not wanting to)

   Quote:
QUESTION THREE: I'm pretty picky about food, but like the simple stuff. Hamburgers, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, french fries. I cannot stand seafood, not even fish sticks. How hard will it be for me to have a simple meal like I've described (capable of preparing myself if the food can be purchased)

You better learn to love Thai food man. You aren't going to find any of that stuff that will satisfy you.

   1. The specific penalties if you were caught gambling online, say in a cafe?

No idea but I'd say the risk of getting in trouble is somewhere between minute and non-existant. I saw many others playing poker from cafe's and I've done it a ton. Many places I've been already have Party and Stars installed.

   Quote:

   2. It was mentioned earlier drugs such as paxil are common, do you need a prescription from a local or are they otc? Does this include adderall or other amphetamines?

You don't need a prescription. Not sure of the law but it is very common to just buy them and not be asked for one.

There are many things you cannot get, any kind of amphetamine is one.

   Quote:
   3. Any personal experiences with the recent coup? Was it similar to how it was reported in the U.S. media? Any worries about it in the future?

I wouldn't worry about it and am changing nothing about my plans as a result of it. There has been no violence and I don't anticipate there to be any...especially toward foreigners. I am sure both sides of that problem agree it would be retarded to make people scared to come to Thailand.

   Quote:
   4. In regards to the 80k/yr tax exemption, it seems there would be a potential problem. If you report you are in Thailand playing poker yet gambling is illegal there, how does the IRS view this?

I'm not sure what you mean but there are many people doing this. I am doing it. I don't anticipate any problems.

The IRS, by law, is not allowed to turn you in for illegal activities that you report on your tax returns. They just want you reporting income.

Also, I would be interested in any kind of 'baller mansion' project, especially if it was on one of the islands right on the beach. PM if any interest

Def not a bad idea. Again, I suggest anybody who might want to do this to checkout the forum I posted and also to first take a trip there and travel around.

Not exactly what I had in mind, but thanks.

I always have a pretty horrible case of diahrea w/in my first week of getting back to Thailand. Other than that, I think the risk of any problems is low.

Party with Degen in BKK... priceless!

Hey man! Glad you got a 2+2 account, I take it you found this thread through my blog?

I'll be back 11/1-11/20...golf is a must next time we are both there.

I've never broke one. I can say that people get seriously injured and die on those things constantly, so be careful.

It's probably best just to get it fixed yourself. A friend that I was travelling with crashed one on koh samiu (sp?) and he had to pay 2700 baht to replace everything. I'm sure we got ripped off and there were other bikes with scratches with the same mileage, but they insisted this one was newer. I don't recall anything about insurance though.

Thanks Degen. My wife understands my various fetishes and fantasies. She has a HUGE thing for guys in uniform (cops/staties and military) and it doesn't bother me. The key fact is that we're both honest and upfront with one another about what we like.

Plus, I think it's better than I want girls to abuse/humiliate me, rather than I'm out there looking to do that to them. Just because you don't understand these things doesn't mean they don't exist in a huge percentage of the population. (my explanation comments directed at the guy who doesn't get it, not Degen)

i've never gotten sick in thailand, but then i grew up there, so im probably used to the food/standards of cleanliness.. in fact, i think some of the precautions they take in AUS let alone the US are abit over the top, but thats me. And again, i've travelled to a fair few places and havnet gotten food poisoning yet, so it probably is just me.

Also im SURE you can get diet coke there.

Finally, going to muay thai fights is awesome. Muay Thai fighters are like gods in thailand, its great, and they're really nice about foreigners trying to learn the sport. You'll see 8 year olds who can through ridiculous combos (the coordination that these kids have is pretty crazy IMO - and i've boxed for more than 4/5 my life!). there are supposed to be several nice stadiums in BKK, though ive only ever been to the one in phuket. The atmosphere is awesome, people are literally screaming as every punch is thrown, and the fights are always good - action packed, with both fighters usually closley matched (there are exceptions of course). Also be wary of some of the 'matches' they set up in the heart of tourist areas, like near bars and whatnot (in patong beach in phuket and in hua hin for example). These are usually staged fights that rip off tourists (drinks are more expensive, etc.), though they're still probably worth it, cuz its a good experience.

anyone who goes to thailand definitely has to go see a muay thai fight!

tbh it has to do with the being married already thing, outside of that to each his own. If he wanted his own wife to slap him around then whatever, but to seek out teenage asian girls while already married seems to be a little, tasteless? And I wasn't equating it to wife beating.

But this is just how I feel about human life and it's my moral standards. Its something that will be scorned at by most people, but I voiced it so flame away. Just explaining my rationale. It could also be that my thinking is off base and I need to reevaluate my own character.

Take the thread back to Thailand though, it doesn't need to get derailed with this. This is the last post I'll make on this subject here.

I plan on getting slapped and doing slapping with underage asian girls while I'm in thailand. It would be immoral not to pay the girl to do this, just think about it, which is worse, letting her starve or take a few slaps to the face.

anyone who goes to thailand definitely has to go see a muay thai fight!
   -pug

I went to a muay thai fight night when i was in phuket. I'm positive it was real (tons of locals and whatnot) but was absolutely stunned by the average age of the fighters. There were probably 3 fights all night of fighters that looked over 15

Perhaps she's half-Thai and I just don't know it!

I had the [censored] for like 2 weeks when I first came to thailand. Your body will be introduced to baceria that it has never seen so it might take a week or so of experimenting with food until your body can develop its own bacteria to protect you.

Someone asked what my setup is like. Im renting a nice one bedroom house for 8000 baht in Samui ($200) and I just chill out on my dsl all day and work. There is a pool next to my house (as in 2 feet away) and if I get tired of the pool I hop on my motorbike and I am at the sea 2 mins later.

You shouldnt be gambling at internet cafes but if you do it in your home then you have nothing to worry about. Yeah, gambling is illeagal here but so is DANCING for christs sakes. Yes, dancing is against the law. So is smoking indoors, etc. There are many laws that arent inforced here. Just dont tell people you are a professional gambooler and you will be fine. I cant imagine what the fine would be anyways. Maybe you have to buy the cheif of police a bottle of wisky or something?

Another great thing about Thailand is you can have anything done for you. Service is cheap. I get my heaps and heaps of laundry cleaned, ironed, and folded for $12 a month.

The dsl is decent. If you are a true baller then you can get your own fiber line for $500 and great speed. But the $20 line is fine and I have not disconected in more then a week.

Where are u located?

This has probably been asked (haven't read the whole thread), but do N. American debit cards work on ATM's in Thailand?

It's weird, because in Poland my card works anywhere in the whole country, while when I was in Korea it only worked when I found a special "international" ATM's. For 95% of the ATM's you needed a card from a Korean bank.

degen,

When you went to thailand the first time were you by yourself? I would think it would be intimidating to go by yourself without any understanding of how bad the language barrier would be, or with no understanding of the culture.

Also however him and his wife are in their own home, as long as she is happy, is none of your [censored] business. Lay off.

Was that a joke? Forgive me but when people demonstrate terrible character it tends to agitate me. I don't like wife beaters either, I guess that might make me out of line too.
But on more pleasant notes, this has been a really good thread that I've really enjoyed reading. <3 Degen.

No it was not a joke. I'm sick of people giving him [censored] for that. The guy is about to have his one year anniversary with his wife but people keep talking about him like he mistreats her or something...if she wasn't happy i'm sure she would leave.

Your welcome for the thread, but please leave grandgnu alone about that.

Whoa whoa whoa, how does wanting to be slapped around by teenage girls equate wife beating? When is a kink indicative of terrible moral character?

I plan on getting slapped and doing slapping with underage asian girls while I'm in thailand. It would be immoral not to pay the girl to do this, just think about it, which is worse, letting her starve or take a few slaps to the face.

hahaha the underage thing is not too common. if you want underage girls, cambodia is your spot.

Tell me more about this 'fiber line'. Is that $500 per month or a one time fee? Do you know up/download speeds? Is that like a T1 or something?

If I got that would I have perfect flawless internet and super fast? Can I get it on Koh Tao also?

Thanks Jacob!

It would probably be a bit easier/funner with friends. MagicNinja did it alone and from what I know had a great time. VeganMav did the same.

My college roomates Will's adopted father is Thai. He had been going to Thailand most of his life and always told me how amazing it was. After I went pro (July of 2005) and started to get a grasp on the amazing freedoms that provides, I took a trip over there with him and another good friend of ours, Brandon, who was my roomate at the time.

We spent three weeks there. Two days in Bangkok and then we went to Koh Samui then Koh Pha Ngan. College roomie headed back to Bangkok but me and our other friend stayed on the islands pretty much the whole trip. Went to the Full Moon Party etc. It is pretty easy to just chill on those islands for weeks at a time. Such an amazingly peaceful existance. Kinda gives you a perma grin.

We went back to Bangkok right before our flight left, went back to California and me and Brandon rented a storage unit immediatly. I tried to figure out a way to break up with my girlfriend and get out of an upcoming trip we had planned to Europe. We got out of our lease and I found a place to store my car.

I ended up not being able to get out of Europe and went over with her anyway, but told her that I was staying and headed over to Thailand afterward, for an unknown amount of time.

I did that and then when she was about to fly over to see me for New Years I ended up finally breaking it off. Felt bad but, ya, I had a new lifestyle

Well dsl in Thailand is overloaded. They split a line and share it with 50 people. If you pay $500 a month they will give you your own line.

On my dsl line I get SUPER FAST speeds at really strange hours when nobody else is using my line. I imagine that if you paid the $500 then these speeds would be all day long.

I dont think you can get it on Koh Tao though. Everything is kinda shaky there. Koh Tao is very nice. Samui is decent as well and very close so you can hop over there anytime you want.
