the only thing im repulsed by is exploiting other countries and cultures while doing nothing to better their society... you stupid hedonistic [censored].

in thai culture it is the responsibility of the children to take care of their parents...and the children feel a great debt to their parents and nearly always do this if they are able, very different from america.
so like, when i give some girl 2,000 baht to suck my dick and let me play with her nipples, she's sending a good 500-1500 baht of that money to isaan and to her husband and children and parents and brothers and sisters etc.
there is some rake involved (woman has to eat right?) but i consider at least 40% of that money to be going directly to charity, without the expensive overhead you get from an organiztion such as Red Cross

the 2000baht part is pretty sad :/

baht is like play money to me. i like being told 500 baht for me, or free or whatever...but i nearly always give them like 3-5k baht if they were nice to me...thats so much money to them and so little to me...i really do look at it like charity. now maybe they can take 2 nights off and go see their family or something.

edit: lol then again whoring is like a once a month occurance for me, if you have a more...regular...habit, then possibly this is too much of an extravagance

ya this thread definitely has a way of pulling the scum bag in all of us out...sex is just so much more interesting to talk about than elephants in the streets and som tum

I just posted this in another forum, but figure this and any future info might help this thread as well.

"I currently live in Bangkok and play poker semi-professionally. I came out here almost 4 years ago after finishing college, now own a few businesses here, and play about 3-4 hours a day of mind-numbing 22 dollar SnG's.

Overall, I love it here. I look at my friends in the states and feel bad when I describe my life to them. I have a good group of poker friends out here, some professional, some just do it for the love of the game. Poker is illegal, but I have no problem getting on most poker sites. My connection is great, and I live a pretty sick life for a mere 25k USD a year (and have a great savings plan as well).

The most beautiful beaches are next door, friendly and beautiful smiles everywhere, wonderful food from all parts of the world, western infrastructure and convenience, and very relaxed people.

The good, though, comes with the bad. People are a little too relaxed and things don't get done as quickly/efficiently as one would want. Touristy areas have touts wanting to rip you off (you might pay 80 bucks for something thats worth 50...woohoo), traffic and smog is a bitch, and its a hard culture with which to fully integrate oneself.

For me, the good far outweighs the bad, however, and that's why I'm here. I have a house, a labrador retriever, an awesome girlfriend, and own some self-sustaining businesses that net me more than the average under 30 guy in the west makes. Life is good out here, and I highly recommend you guys to give it a shot while you still can."

I don't understand a lot of the posters in this thread. They respond to ur54sold by saying "Let me live my own life. You do what you want to do. I'll do what I want to do. I'm not hurting anyone." Now while the last part may be up for debate, it's a good response. But then you turn around and say "backpackers suck lol what a bunch of jokers." Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

I don't think that the appeal of Thailand is living like a millionaire without being one. Living simply among other people living simply is what I enjoyed. Of course it's nice to do that on a beach too.

I think Ski can provide more accurate information than me, but the bargirls than I hung out with during my week in Bangkok spent more money than me. We went to that nightclub Spicy and they probly dropped like 4-5k baht. I somehow doubt that these girls are whoring their way through university while also sending money back to their parents. And even if they are, I think it's unfortunate that girls who choose not to be bargirls have no realistic shot of making anywhere near the money that bargirls do.

Here's the thing about bargirls: they're like irresponsible poker players. Unless they're really stunning and can get a guy every night, bargirling can be really high variance. When things are running well, they forget about the bad times and spend all their money. They have no concept of financial responsibility--if they saved even 5% of the money they made, they would be set for life. There are no bargirl retirement packages, you either find a foreigner to marry/rip off or you end up a street vendor or rice farmer making $3/day. If you gave a girl $100k, it would be gone within months.

I'm talking here about the career bargirls and not the ones trying to put food on their family's table.

There are many companies offer treks, but some are much better than others. A lot of places talk to you then send you off to some random guy and you follow him around with 10 other people like sheep. You don't go far from Chiang Mai with those guys, and the villages are far from authentic. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to treks.

I will post more about this when I have a bit more time, but here's a preview:

On a side note, for whomever is going to be around late Nov to the end of Dec. we should hang out. I def can't wait to come.

Any 2+2 associates/paralegals/solos work in Thailand? Any associates at DLA Piper, Latham & Watkins, etc? TR? What is the quality of life there vs. cravel type firms in the US?

I'm thinking of moving there and could probably swing it just doing outsourced work but it would be pretty cool to really get into the business & legal culture out there...

also, how [censored] baller a lifestyle can you have on a $200-230k income in a place like thailand? Crazy baller or moderately baller?

Jungle treking/adventure travel might be better in Laos. You'll probably get more bang for your buck and the experience would be more authentic due to the country (especially the rural areas) being less developed. There's everything from anthropological ethnic discovery tours to hanging out with elephants to living in a network of tree houses connected with rappel lines. Try this site and google for more info.

Without knowing it, I would guess its the same as Bangkok in the way that in Bangkok you can have that for 7K baht or 50K baht without there being much of a difference...

so I tried a midget trip report: -was actually 1m45 so 50cm difference with me basically my palm is bigger than her whole hand - to me that counts as midget -non pay4play kind. told me her ex was a 40yo unemployed UK guy, wtf (she was 25) -somehow was waiting for Chris Hansen to walk in on us screw!ng someone so small is, like, weird -anything else than midget on top is just not that practical

basically, interesting but not that good.

oh, I've met several "older" girls (like 25-35) with good jobs - architect, doctor, business owner (real business, not pad thai stall) either single or dating a 50yo white dude cuz they can't find anyone suitable, this makes me sad (even though it makes things easier for "us")

You can get the "American breakfast" anywhere in Bangkok, which is like eggs, bacon, sometimes cereal, juice, coffee, 2 pieces of toast...

If those smells make you puke, this may not be the place for you. Of course you can find pretty much any western convenience you might want in Bangkok, but waffles and scrambled eggs are far from the Thai standard.

Oh and bacon is meat, is it not?

so I tried a midget trip report:
-was actually 1m45 so 50cm difference with me basically my palm is bigger than her whole hand - to me that counts as midget
-non pay4play kind. told me her ex was a 40yo unemployed UK guy, wtf (she was 25)
-somehow was waiting for Chris Hansen to walk in on us screw!ng someone so small is, like, weird
-anything else than midget on top is just not that practical
basically, interesting but not that good.
oh, I've met several "older" girls (like 25-35) with good jobs - architect, doctor, business owner (real business, not pad thai stall) either single or dating a 50yo white dude cuz they can't find anyone suitable, this makes me sad (even though it makes things easier for "us")

Shagging a midget ahah you rock! About the 25-30 good looking with good situations : middle and upper middle class woman have a hard time finding thai men. They can't marry up and they won't marry down hence the situation.

Being a 20 something white male in thailand = you can shag anygirl, anywhere, anytime except for the upper upper class which very hard to infiltrate.

you'll be fine but you'll want to take motorbike taxi to go from your place to Nana BTS station cuz it's a bit far and streets are packed full of stalls at night there so not easy to walk.

Also you don't see it but on their map http://bangkok-sukhumvit.frasershospitality.com/images/location_map.gif where soi Nana crosses water there's a express boat stop, giving you good access to interesting part of the city http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khlong_Saen_Saep_Express_Boat

cool thanks. ya would definitely be interested in more info. do you just kill animals and walk through the jungle? or what is it that you do? from people who pmed me a while back if i remember correctly they seemed to really recommend it, so trying to get an idea if i'd like it.

Oops lol no it's pure coincidence that two of the pictures involve dead animals. I suppose I just found those photos cooler than the others. The top picture was a sacrifice for an animist ritual, and the bottom was when the guy in the photo nailed a bird with his slingshot.

The guide (3rd picture down, on the left) spoke English, Thai, and Karen (the tribal languague). He also happens to be a really good cook. He cooks all of your meals with the help of a village family and other guides he brings along (who he brings along presumably in case he gets injured somehow and to pay them).

The hiking is very variable. Sometimes you're on a jungle path, other times you're out in the open.

The place I went is called Pooh's Eco Trekking, which is located on Ratchpakinai road close to the south moat. I did three treks with them, all with Tee (3rd picture on the left) as guide. What distinguishes his treks from the common touristy ones are:

1. Tourist treks always include elephant riding and bamboo rafting. If you want to ride an elephant, I'd go to the elephant conservation center so you know the animals aren't being horribly mistreated and exploited for tourists to ride on them. I didn't go bamboo rafting, but I hear it is quite the sleeper. You just coast up the river standing there. Whitewater rafting is the way to go in my opinion. 2. His language skills and knowledge. Tee spoke the best english in terms of vocabulary of any Thai person I met. Speaking Karen and being Karen himself is also an awesome characteristic. He knows how they live and how they do things. He is their friend, and not simply a business acquaintance. 3. The villages. Villages close to Chiang Mai have a lot of tourists. Tee drives you far as [censored], close to the Burmese border. In the touristy villages the villagers have coca-cola, try to sell you stuff, and many can even speak a bit of english. No pepsi where we went. A selling point for a lot of treks is the interaction with the villagers (an overnight stay with a tribal family!). On touristy treks, that interaction is likely to be limited. You might drink with them a bit, but then they go back home and you go to bed in what is essentially a village guesthouse. I stayed with a family, in a sleeping bag on hard bamboo two feet from the fire. 4. Group size. The treks I went on had 3 people including myself. Expect 8+ for touristy treks. 5. Additional guides. On every trek I went on, Tee brought along other people for certain legs of the trip. It's cool seeing them interact with their home environment (like jumping rock to rock with sandals while you're slooowwwly making your way in shoes). If something were to happen to Tee or a trekker, it also has to be a huge benefit to have people who know the area ready to help. 6. Cost. You can probably find a 3 day/2 night touristy trek for like 1500 baht or less. The 3 day/2 night eco trek will cost around 4k baht.

Ask away if you have any questions.

How is the level of the universities down there, not that I need anything extraordinary. I saw that they opened a new college of management at the Mahidol university (looks to be in a central city location) that looks to have a good international orientation and some interesting courses, so I was wondering if it could be worth to spend a period of my graduation study there, as exchange student or indipendent. Better that I look for another country to study abroad or Thailand is also worth from this point of view, with the great advantage to be a pretty cheap place and with links to nice touristic locations all around?

I think that diarrhea is often a problem, but that was the only medication I brought. Didn't need to use it the whole time I was there though.

Some people bring malaria pills.

And one more thing. I think a lot of the fun of it is not knowing exactly what you're gonna get into, so I don't like posting super specific information. I make an exception for the treks though because I really think that Pooh's has the right philosophy.

NewTeaBag and I had no problems the first month we were there, then both had digestive problems throughout the second month. It's more a problem of moderate diarrhea rather than a "I couldn't leave my hotel room for five days" nightmare. Just go to the nearest pharmacy, describe your symptoms (they all speak English), and take whatever pills they give you. You'll feel better within a few hours.

Do you just need to cross the border or do you need to go to a Thai consulate? If you're just crossing the border, you're spending maybe 20 minutes in the other country so it doesn't really matter where you go.

So the cops are after you...

Vientiane is 5-6k baht round-trip flight from Bangkok and is awesome. There's also a sleeper train but the flight is only about an hour.

Also, she's there for like a week. Anything she should make sure she does while she's there? She'll probly be in Bangkok most of the time. I think they may hit up "ko samet or ko chang" too.

Thanks in advance.

I plan to hit the santika ( but it's very thai ) RCA is a popular choice, and there is a special party with some DJs from europe at the Qbar soi 11 tonight.

But on friday every nightclub in bangkok is booming so should not be to hard to find a place.

Snow,

If you have a friend who is a farang girl and wants you to take her out, I'd take her to Q Bar+Bed Supper Club or RCA as mentioned. You could also take her to Ratchida (Soi 5 is my favorite but many people prefer Collisieum or Hollywood Bar), those are on the opposite side of the road, should be Soi 6 or 8 or something.

MBK is the closest thing that Bangkok has to a Downtown or Town Center...so she picked a good spot to navigate from. If you guys are feeling up for some more fun after the traditional clubs close at 1 or 1:30, you could take her to Spicey, its an after hours club very near MBK. You wont find it in any tour guides because its illegal but its huge and pretty cool. Sometimes the owners don't pay the cops enough and they shut it down at 3 or 4, instead of 6 or 7 like normal. Just tell any taxi or tuk tuk driver that you want to go to 'Spicey Disco' if they dont understand that then tell them Long Muan Soi 1. I'm sure I spelled that wrong but thats how it sounds, or at least they always nod and take me to Spicey when I say it like that to them

Other after hours spots:

Boss: not sure where it is buts its not bad if the others are closed...mostly hookers though

Spice Club on Sukhumvit 11 (not to be confused with Spicey, this one is in the basement of the ambassador hotel)...good house band that sings horribly accented american cover tunes

Black and white: sukhumvit soi 1, lotta hookers, ok music, better than sitting in your hotel at 3am

lol. this is not a poker strategy thread. chris furgeson just turned $0 into $10k on FTP though...so if you can do that, you can probably live about a year in thailand if you tried really hard/didn't live in bangkok/didn't bang whores/had your thai girlfriend make all meals for you from things she bought at the thai grocery store

Too much Chivas, some pool hustling by F, a gay guy hitting on me, cookie's girl hitting on me, rewket and a ladyboy, a strange after hour place, more alcohol, jappe missing a 4000 bucks if you sleep with this girl bet, cookie drunk out of his mind, rewket's girl too drunk to [censored], a girl refusing to kiss me cause it's "wrong" ( but feeling her ass was ok) and some more nonsense.

Sunrise tacos delivers 24/7, they have great food. My bar is on Sukhumvit Soi 11, and they delivered to us at like 3 AM a couple nights ago. They have kick ass tacos and are open 24/7...next to the times square building.

It's the Fun House bar at the end of the Soi, between Bed Club and Q-bar. It's basically like Cheers there. Half of the regulars are poker players, mostly from the states. We'll be playing beer pong there tomorrow night after our pool tournament if you want to join. I'll be there around 10 or so dressed as a pimp for Halloween...not much of a change because technically speaking I guess I am a...oh whatever.

Degen won't be there as he's traveling now, but he's an occasional Fun House guy as well. It'd be nice to meet up some 2+2ers there.

Heres the thing about Bangkok. You have all of these amazing places you can go out to...Sirocco or however you spell that has one of the most amazing views in the world, hands down. Patpong, Soi Cowboy et al have their obvious draws, you can go to Pegasus, The Pent or one of the other assorted 'members only' gentelemans clubs and pay american prices to tap ex-atresses, go pickup some hot young college girls at RCA or do whatever other people do at 1am in Bangkok...or you can find a chill little bar painted like a 12 year olds birthday party with a bunch of like minded people who can speak your language and don't bow at you...and you can go there every time you feel like drinking. Orgies ensu, coke parties, mass whoring or just playing pool and passing out. Ya. If you read this far you should probably understand what I mean. lol

Yeah, Bangkok does have everything at your fingertips. That's one of the reasons why I call this place home now. I do miss friends and family, but going back to the states for a couple weeks now just bores the hell out of me. Do any you guys speak/read Thai?

I'd designate a week in Bangkok, a week on the islands, and then keep a week free to play it by ear. Flights are really cheap and you can book them the day before.

You want to stay as flexible as you can, but definitely see the islands and enjoy the bangkok nightlife.

Woops, misread that. I thought you were here for three weeks. Either way, what I've said basically stays the same. Play it by ear, and no need to lock yourself in with set plans.

I'm pretty sure that with better hair, pink sunglasses and a cigarette you could fit the place pretty well.

Housenuts,

Bangkok is an acquired taste. Try it for a few nights but if you aren't feeling it then make a B-line for the islands. Koh Phi Phi or a Full Moon Party on Koh Pha Ngan...or Samui or even just Samet (2 hours from BKK).

As DTTG said, best not to have fixed plans. There are many different Thailands, best to remain flexible and find your own.

I'm very jealous as I don't think I'm going to be there for New Years.

There is an APPT Event with a $2500 and a $15k buy-in coming up in Macau, anybody heading to that?

APPT Manilla was pretty awesome and I heard great things about Seoul as well.

This is definitely true. Bangkok is like any other major city, some people love it, some people hate it. Throughout this thread, I've seen a number of posts like "Hey guys in February I'm moving to Bangkok for 8 months. What's a skytrain?"

Stay in the place a while before committing to living there.

best way to visit bangkok is to only book a 1 way ticket there. and then blow your whole bankroll on bad play and booze in 2weeks then u have to love it. It's pretty hard to hate anyways.

It was nice to meet you guys at my bar the other night. I had a great time, though the end is a bit blurry. Who ended up winning the last game of beerpong?

We have another pool tournament tomorrow at Hillary Bar, but we'll end up at the fun house possibly for some beer pong afterwords. PM me if you're headed out manana.

You can get poorly made suits made from terrible fabric cheaply anywhere in Thailand. You can get much nicer suits at the places I listed above, but you'll have to pay more than $80.

Suits - I've been going to the same guy on Soi 17, "George" for the past few years. Don't go for the crap 80 dollar suits. Even your grandma will notice how cheap it is at the party.

The toilet - Wow, you guys actually sat on that toilet?

Tonight (Monday) - Hillary Bar is on Soi 4 about 40 meters after the plaza on the right side (there is another Hillary bar on the left side, don't go to that one).

Pumpui - You're on for HU beerpong

UPDATE:

Just learned that we are playing pool at Hillary Bar's Soi 11 location...it's about halfway down the soi on the left side before Bed Supper Club and the Fun House. Much cuter girls at that place, they have three floors of pool tables and a great food menu. Starts at 8.

Definitely worth the hassle. Tailor made suits for less than 200 USD are hard to come by. You can even have them line the inside with "armani" silk or whatever. Once you start getting tailored clothes, you'll never buy off the rack crap again (besides Red Sox World Series Championship t-shirts...yeah baby).

Really depends on what you like to do. You could use everything between 10K baht and 200K baht.

I just use the ATMs to get money out, far from optimal, but dont really know what else to do...

There are exchange places EVERYWHERE. Little booths run by banks that are more common than Starbucks locations in any major city in North America.

There are also ATMs EVERYWHERE. Look for the "PLUS" symbol:

At any one of them, and make sure your debit card is on the network. You could also withdraw money from your credit card, but seriously, why?

For under a month, I'd say $1000 (US) would keep you very comfortable as long as you don't need to stay at high end chain hotels and don't plan on doing a lot of shopping.

One of my my last trips I spent almost $1000 on clothing and shoes alone, whereas on another visit I spent that on accommodation, transport AND food for an entire month. You can be extremely flexible with your budget.

is it safe to use your credit card in places, and will they give you cash back on credit card purchases? they did this in greece for an additional 5%, which is probably about the same amount a bank would charge you for an interac withdrawal, ya?

usually have 3000THB on me.. and I don't keep debit card and CC on me when I'm out, would be too much of a pain if I loose it.

withdrawal are cheaper than paying with CC for me. also if you pay with CC they'll charge your card with THB so you'll still have fees to pay.

Change everywhere in BKK at bank booth. Airport might have a worse rate than in the city so only change enough for taxi at the airport. The rate is 33.6 THB per USD for $50 and $100 banknotes. Really, the only rule is don't change your money before coming to Thailand because the offshore rate is like 5% worse than the inshore rate, current offshore rate is 31.6.

how much u need...600 Baht/day not counting accomodation and alcohol. ymmv

If you change one thing, everything changes. So basicly you cant ask this question in a vacuum.

And as pumpui Ive used more or around the same as at home, which is a lot, Im from Denmark which has a high cost of living compared to almost any other place in the world. But the money is just spend on other stuff.

WOW!!!!! Uninspiring architecture!!! I've gotta get on the next plane to Bangkok.

How much do you spend a month? Do things cost the same or do you buy more and live in a place you couldn't really afford in Canada?

Why would anyone live in a dirty, smelly, heavily polluted city when you can live in the developed world? Any Thai would happily swap places and live in Canada.

btw, airasia has a "free" flight promotion for booking right now until sunday on some routes: http://www.airasia.com/site/th/en/promotion.jsp?reference=bkk071147

Great thread guys. I'm looking to move out to Bangkok by the start of January. Can anyone recommend any nice 1 bedroom apartments? My rent budget is about 30k baht/month.

manylevels, I'm pretty sure that hardly any casinos in macau offer poker (apart from chinese poker and the like), so if you're going there looking for some live action, it may not be easy to find

You can get a sweet suite for that. Check out Centre Point Serviced apartments. I couldn't get past all the hotel brokers, but google it and ye shall find. There are better recommendations, but I just can't think of them right now...I'll back to you on that.

There is an online speed dating party at my bar this saturday (cheezy, but lots of single chicks).

The Riverside Hotel is Chiang Mai does the job, though I've only been to Chiang Mai a couple of times. It's centrally located, price is affordable, and its uh...by the river.

I know Bangkok a lot better, so whats your price range?

Instead of another city, I would go to one/some of the islands. Phuket, Krabi, Samui are all nice, especially over the next few months.

I live by the Lao border (Vientiane is 15km away) and I've never heard of anyone getting malaria or of this being a serious concern. Dengue fever is a possibility but your chances of catching it are very low and it is rarely fatal.

Is it easy to fly in and out of Thailand? Anyone have any recommendations on where I should go and what I should see?

I'm in Bangkok also until next summer. Travel to the nearby countries is easy and cheap, especially with Air Asia. A round trip to Singapore from Bangkok cost me 170 $ and it can be cheaper. I went to the Philippines and didnt liked it a lot. Its a bit too much poor, its really worse than thailand, outside of makati wich is the rich part of manila. Also, much of the girls tend to be fat wich is kind of weird in asia. I heard theres good beach on baracay and some other places but i didnt go.

Singapore is like the perfect city. Its very clean everywhere with a lot of tree and beautiful buildings. The crime rate is very low. The traffic is good, theres a good nightlife also, but its very expensive. You cant find a decent hotel under 100 $ us a night, and most of them are 150 and up. A beer in a good bar cost about 10 $ us, etc

All that said, it lack the energy and sense of freedom that I like in Thailand.

The area around Vientiane shouldnt be bad, but for instance if you stay close to the cambodian border etc you might be at risk, but its just what I remember from the doctor before I went here... But in the end the guy who asked should ask his doctor IMO...

Obviously send assault squad in through lower balcony door--you're protected against fire from all upper windows and upper balcony. Sniper team can neutralize exposed targets on upper level.

Bring some food (preferably chicken) and I probably wont even notice the guns. Seriously we're sitting ducks here. Roger couldn't even bring home 4 pizzas without losing 2 of them in a brawl against the pack of mad dogs patrolling the muddy road outside our house!

Bangkok is probably not the best place to learn to ride a motorbike. Make sure you get an automatic; you'll have enough to worry about while driving without having to pay attention to switching gears.

My friend has a proper motorcycle but it's not very useful in the city and he's trying to sell it. It's not nearly as maneuverable as a motorbike and is generally a pain if you aren't traveling long distances on highways.

alright expats help me out please.

trying to decide on a take the gf away type vacation. preferable somewhere chilled and nice beach in the day then nightlife on the night. for example Ko Samui staying on the chilled side then going to Chaweng on the night would be ideal but i don't want to do Samui again.

so options i have come up with so far are either Ko Chang or Krabi then phi phi. Chang seems to be winning out of those as from travelfish it seems krabi has no nightlife and phi phi is going to suck with the amount of tourists around christmas time.

so, which do you guys think is better and any improvements on this? also visited and don't want to revisit ko tao, ko pang yang, pattaya, phuket.

thank you.

Check out my Bangkok bike. VFR 750 with MotoGP body kit. I had it for a couple months then sold it. It was fun but pretty quickly it wore off and it was just impractical for the city. Sounded killer though.

As a girl, I have to vote for Costa Lanta on Ko Lanta. It's one of the few areas I have yet to visit and the hotel is sexy and private as hell. Pricey, though, and I'm unsure of the nightlife factor. But who needs bars when there is wine and hammocks? (imo.)

Also, how about an upscale resort in Chiang Mai? Or Koh Lipe/Adang (very different accommodation options, however) Or a cheap flight to Singapore + nice hotel? There are a lot of possibilities here. Exciting!

As a man, I make fun of you because you suggest a place you don't even know. But ok it's a pretty nice place.

There is no nightlife on koh Lanta and basically nothing to do ( stay 3 days max I'd say ).

Koh Chang is probably my favorite island, quite beautiful and you can stay there a week without getting bored to death.

If the girl is worth it, the four seasons chiang mai is perfect IMO.

Buy the cheapest phone you can, should be about $45. If you own a compatible phone, just buy a Thai sim card.

You get 30 day stamp at the airport immo desk. Depending upon their mood, they my ask for your return ticket and a hotel destination. Return tic should be easy (since you plan on leaving) and for a hotel you can just use a name (say Grand President, BKK). But yeah, you're deffo fine unde 30 days.

If we don't make it out there should be just skip going and head somewhere else. Or is the FMP something you definitely would not miss?

Most US plugs work just fine. I reccomend picking up a power strip anywayz (for like $3) just to be sure though. They are widely available in supermarkets etc.

actually, he doesn't play poker. he came over here to teach 4 years ago. he plays in some hockey league and him and a couple of his teammates started a hockey apparel company. it is doing well enough that he quit his teaching job this past year. anyways, maybe it is price. he pays $750 for 2 story house. bedroom, bathroom and living room upstairs. office for 4 people, kitchen, dining room and bathroom downstairs. obviously, i have no idea how that price compares to others. i believe it is rama 9, soi 41. not too far from the university.

we went to bully's tonight and then to nana. i'm not really into nana. i prefer regular bars and clubs. bully's was pretty cool. places i liked from my last trip include: scratch dog, gullivers, woodstock, and few others that i don't remember the names of.

i will be here until december 1st. my buddy spends most of his time working and hanging out with his new gf so it would be great if i could meet up with some 2+2er's for some beers some night.

tuesday night we went to some local bar over here. myself, my friend and his gf all on his motorbike was one of the most hilarious/ridiculous things i've ever seen.

So Bones and I are coming to Thailand Jan 27th through Feb 29th next year.

To do list:

-Breakfastsupperclub -Check out other various clubs -kick ass Seasfood place I saw on TV -Have orgy w/ various thai hookers -scuba diving

Other then that I'd love to hear other suggestions. Money is not an issue at all. I literally want to have the time of my life.

Next question, am I correct to assume that it shouldn't be an issue finding a place that is broadcasting the superbowl right?

Next question, we have a 14 hour layover in south Korea. Can we just leave the airport, or do we need to get a visa? I feel like this a noob question, but I've never been over seas before.

Next question, it isn't that big of a deal to get a 30day visa at the airport is it? Would I just be better off going to DC and visiting the thai counsalette?

I think that about covers all my questions/comments. Look forward to seeing whomever is around then.

It's bed supperclub, worth dining and wining there but the club itself is meh at best, ( my farts-smell good crowd. ). The thai nightclubs ( RCA, Thong Lo, Ekkamai ect... are just way better )
-Check out other various clubs : ok then
-kick ass Seasfood place I saw on TV : Is it the "if it can swim we have it" one? Kickass indeed and i'm not really into seafood.

   -scuba diving

Way too much stuff to do. Once in the city all your plans will change anyway.

I dunno. It's a nice place, but I wouldn't stay anywhere near Haad Rin or the party zone, it's a [censored] dump afterwards for a few days.

The times I went I arrived two or three days early and it was still tough to find even a halfway decent guesthouse on the north coast. I might almost suggest staying on Samui (ugh?) and taking a speedboat over. Of course, the last time I was at a FMP was four years ago.

If you like parties, hippies, and loud music that mixes horrible on a trash littered beach, it's your thing. If I ever went again I think I'd just arrive for the sunrise and to watch all the goofy yobs piss in the ocean and get arrested.

But that's just me.

Suggestion: Get your degenerate expat friends together and make a reservation and pig out at a Thanksgiving buffet like the Marriott on sukumvit or other hotel. I think the Westin has a good one too.

Because this has been asked and answered at least three times. If the adapter can handle the different voltage, then yes, you can use your devices. If not, no.

Google is your friend: http://www.theballinhand.com/

There are two of them (at least there were last year)

The Original Ball in Hand is located in the Rajah Hotel Complex, Sukhumvit Soi 4 (Nana). (downstairs from Sin bar)

The Ball in Hand Asok:

  • 314 Square meters
  • Featuring Nine Brunswick Metro Pool Tables
  • Seven 9 foot tables and two 8 foot tables
  • Pro Shop that caters for A-Z of any cue repairs
  • Large center bar
  • Perfect playing environment for pool players of all levels

Located between Sukhumvit Soi 12 and 14 in the basement of Times Square Building.

Brunswick tables are pricey, that's all I know about it.

This quite obviously depends on the airline you choose. Changeable dates will obviously cost more, how much I dont know. For my ticket there was a big difference between 6 month and 6 month + 1 day.

But in the end, call the airline you want to fly with...

Im pretty sure the entry thing said nothing about past crimes. You can get visa from ur own country. I got 3x60 days, which means I just need to cross any border for 2 seconds every 60 days to be here for 6 month. If you are not broke I think a 1 year visa is pretty easy obtainable from ur home country too, they just need to see bankstatements saying you are in fact not ¸ber broke.

From a NYTimes article:

To catch the infectious Thai spirit of the day (and show your enthusiasm), pack a yellow shirt. The National Commission on the Celebrations has asked everyone to wear yellow shirts (the royal color) every day from Dec. 1 to 5 to demonstrate their love and respect for His Majesty.

You can buy the 'official' King shirts anywhere, pretty much. Polo style seem to be the most popular, and they aren't expensive.

Use credit card and withdraw money at the ATMs, max card every time for best value. And then you dont have to bring monopoly money

I wouldn't try to use it to buy things. Just go to one of the hundreds of kiosk type money changing places in Bangkok and get them turned into baht as you need them. Or deposit the money at your Canadian ATM while at home and withdraw at will when in Thailand.

60baht for a yellow t-shirt. I have no intention of wearing those yellow polo with the logo. and yeah, that's the first piece of yellow garment I've ever bought

The yellow shirt sucks?

Also, Kanchanaburi is a really nice area. I've never been for the festival (which I think remembers those lost) but the town is great.

Relaxed, river centric (obviously) and is quite slowly paced, if you avoid all the tour buses. I got a riverhut, used the bicycle they had to get around and saw all the historical sites. A pretty somber place, but well worth the visit and the scenic train ride in.

In any case, a quick Google search found a bunch of stuff on the festival itself.

I also found some photos of the laser show and fireworks over the bridge.

Get visa with multiple entries or 1 year visa depending on how long you plan to stay from your home country before you go here. IMO

Yellow is not really my color

The main reason why I am going there is that lightshow. I am also going to check out the tigertemple and waterfalls.

It seems like a snooze place but I think I will appreciate that after a few weeks in bangkok.

Just like that article says "late November and early December" nobody seem knows any exact dates. I am going up there on the third of dec and expect a big finale on the fifth of dec.

Thanks for the info!

where's the best place to buy a suit in bangkok?

some tuktuk driver took me to CJ Collection Fashion Style. I looked around a bit, and the guy said he could give me 3 italian cashmere suits for 35,000 baht. or 3 english cashmere suits for 25,000. i didn't even try haggling because i wasn't ready to buy a suit at all. i'm sure i could get it down. funny enough, he told me there was a discount if i bought 3 instead of 1, then i asked him how much 1 one, and he grabbed his calculator and did 35,000 divided by 3, and that was the price.

i don't know much about suits, but if there are some places that are truly a good deal, i could be swayed to pick up a couple.

also, any idea how much it costs to ship them back to north america?

When the tuk tuk takes you somewhere the tuk tuk gets money from the place he takes you if you buy something, thus things are overpriced where the tuk tuk brings you, or even scams for the gem stuff.

I think it was donttaptheglass that mentioned Goerge on soi 22 or something like that, look at the last 10 pages or so. He has been here some time, so his probably right...

Going to Koh Samui for 3+ months in February. I know everybody said to just get a property when searching on the ground but myself and another 2p2er have found a pretty good place with broadband/ocean view etc on the north east of the island. Haven't booked it yet but will probably do so next week.

2 beds, 2 bathrooms with Sat TV. This is around 45k baht per month and i assume that doesnt include all the other stuff added on top of it. Are we getting completely ripped off here or not? It just seems to me that there can only be a limited amount of property there and even less that fit all the requirements so i might be being a bit of a vag but i dont really want to rock up there and have to change plans before we even get started because there's nothing suitable. any help on this is greatly appreciated.

We are both decent winners at 2/4-5/10 so an extra 20k baht a month or whatever isnt that big a deal but it's the principle i suppose.

Also if anyone is living there atm could they him me up on AIM at FletcherNineteen ? it would be an awesome help and i'll make sure to get the beers in when we arrive

Fletch

You can rent them almost anywhere on Patong beach in Phuket (and other beaches, but they're really everywhere there) and in most places on Samui if I remember. Just be careful, I've seen more falang on big bikes vs trucks than I care to remember. Great way to see the beaches and cruise over jungley hills though.

Yeah. Bikes (and Jeeps) vs trucks. Dudes on bikes that can't control them sliding on wet roads. Mangled wreckage of bikes.

I wouldn't necessarily advise against it, especially knowing you ride a bike back home, but I think a lot of people can't handle the power of the bike (maybe they've just been riding scooters and can't handle the big bikes) or the roads are too chaotic for them or they're drunk. I don't know. People get dumb over there or don't understand the Thai rules for driving, I'm not sure. There are something like 10,000 accidents (car and bike) involving tourists every year on Phuket, and about 175 die. The Phuket Gazette always has some morbid numbers.

I've also heard that sometimes the big bikes get abused, so be sure to keep a number on you for the bike rental place incase it [censored] out on you on a big hill. I am also not really sure on the insurance policies.

I was once in Phuket for bike week (http://www.phuketbikeweek.com/), that was pretty awesome. I think a lot of people rent bikes and tour the North as well. It is still a great way to see the island, and a fun way to get around (the roads are amazing, hairpinned, curvy, elephants are spotted, etc etc) so just be cautious, I guess.

Check out: http://www.trv.net/bigbike/index.htm Or visit Patong BigBike. Their website is under construction, but they are on 39/18 Rat-U-Thit Rd. just near Patong beach. Also you might want to read this for a bit of info on the driving rules, fueling up etc on Phuket http://www.knowphuket.com/driving.htm
