LOLZ About a week ago, I went up to Hat Kamala to see what the nightlife was like (considering getting a house nearby). There were about 15 bars in operation with about a 5 bargirl/waitress to 2 customer ratio except for a "BeerGarden." Inside the "BeerGarden" were a lovely bunch of sweaty 50 someting, paunchy, Germanz drooling over 20 something Thai Girls. Been here over 3 months now and it's still hard to get used to that sight.

Yeah, it's pretty gross. Whatever, I'm gonna go get drunk and bang a hooker.

Damn, if only they were legal. Oh wait, the age of consent is 15. Just don't pay them.

I'm picking my sister up at the airport tonight. I'm going to keep calling her so she has to look at her phone and say "Shhhhh, it's my brother" before answering. If you don't get it, I'm not going to explain it.

Forgot to mention that I took a bus from Laos to Bangkok and several times it was boarded by military and/or police who demanded to see our passports. Standard? It might have something to do with the military wanting to keep pro-Thaksin people out of bkk. I read in the Bangkok Post yesterday that the junta "can't guarantee the safety of Thaksin if he returns." I think we can all read between the lines here.

KKF, I packed the monitor in one of my suitcases.

Air asia has flights from bkk to chiang mai for under $40. Am I going to die?

Just got home from my first trip to Thailand [BKK, Koh Samui, Koh Tao) and what an awesome trip that that was! I was there with my fiancÈ. Thanks all for the tips.

Positive

   * Koh Tao (ended up spending 90% of our vacation on this island)
   * Scuba diving (holy [censored] I'm addicted, the best thing ever)
   * Fishing (barracudas (that restaurants coocked for free to us since we brought the ingredients) and other unknown fish)
   * Coconuts (tasty!)
   * Thai people (the ones not trying to sell you stuff)
   * Food (very good, very cheap)
   * Fake t-shirts (that I washed and shrunked)
   * Waterfalls
   * Bangkok

Negative

   * Chaweng, Samui (what a tourist trap!)
   * People trying to sell you stuff (annoying)
   * Anything with no A/C
   * Fist fighting tourists (brits. entertaining though... so might be positive)

Is there a section of Bangkok with a lot of middle eastern or Indian people? I need to buy some self-lighting charcoals for my hookah and this seems like the logical place to do it.

I'm feeling kind of ambivalent about Bangkok. I'll reevaluate the city when I: 1. Have more money 2. Actually can access to the money I have. I'm starting to realize that I really need to work on my Thai if I want to live here. In Patong and Vientiane I was fine using English and maybe 30 Thai words/phrases that I could mix in. I mean, I know how say "no sadism" but I need to know how to say "turn left" or "wtf is this food you're selling."

I really liked Vientiane and I'm considering going back there to stay for at least a few months. I've done some research and quality internet access is available but it doesn't come cheaply. It could be around the same price as my rent depending on where I live and how fast and reliable I want my connection to be. Lol, the best plan is a dedicated 512k wireless connection for US $5k/month.

When I was picking my sister up at the airport, the thought occurred to me that if you were really broke, you could just live there for free and support yourself by playing poker on the free wifi. Your only expense would be food but sleeping well would obviously be a problem. Prop bet anyone?

Just go where you are happy man. Bangkok is nice in fact you just have to make a few more bucks to discover it. Why not trying a month or two in issan ( udon thani or another city ) it's very nice. And you will learn to eat spicy there guaranteed.

WhoIam and I had tentatively planned a trip up to Issan (khan Kaen being my gf's home city) for the rocket festival in may but those plans laid dormant (as many a tentative plan will in Thailand as it's so easy to just "sabai sabai" it day by day.)

i really suggest the non-self lighting coals for a hookah. obviously, if you don't have access to a gas burner or other way to start the coals you have to get the self lighting. make sure you let it burn hot for a little while before using it. you don't want to inhale the self lighting chemicals.

I gave up on the idea once I realized my visa expired on that Friday. Planning the logistics of a visa run/mini vacation was way too much for my Phuket level of laziness.

I'll be sure to check out Isan sometime. One of the Lao girls actually offered to take me on a holiday (as in pay for me) to Udon Thani if I didn't go to Bangkok. Maybe I should have accepted.

I think I'm just not into Bangkok for the same reason I don't really like NYC: it's just too big, too crowded, too everything. I prefer smaller cities like Boston or San Francisco. Again, this perception of BKK probably has a lot to do with the fact that my financial situation will continue to suck for another week or two.

This would probably work because older Asian women love me By this I mean older than me (27-33) but I imagine the middle-aged ones would as well. We actually were talking about this the other night. "Bangkok Gigolo" would be a great undertitle.

Hey all, This was a fascinating thread. Really makes you want to visit Thiland. My law school has a bridge course with a two-week residence in Chiangmai, Thailand. I'm really considering going after reading this. I just hope two weeks with classes would leave me time to meet some local people and see some sites. Hope this hasn't been covered but how is Chiangmi?

Lived there for 18 months in 2002-2004. I really liked it. It is not huge like BKK; maybe 200K in the area. Very manageable size, easy to get around. Plenty of ex-pats there and a clearly defined tourist zone where you can easily get by without any Thai language. The best parts are outside of that though.

PM or add specific questions you might have. I can recommend a guesthouse if you do go.

I'm hopefully going to Chiang Mai tonight. In Bangkok right now. What guest house? Also, for people who have been there more recently, who is giving the best jungle treks nowadays? Also where is the train station in Chiang Mai?

Basic Thai question also: In my book it says that "a" is pronounced like the "u" in "run." So that means that farang is pronounced furung ya? wat=wut(like what)? I need the basic pointers because I'd feel really embarassed if I mispronounced hello or thank you or something like that.

You are not correct about those pronunciations. Ask a Thai how to say those words and it will help.

There's no standard system for converting Thai into the western alphabet. As a result, you'll see the same thing spelled in different ways, even something as common as Khao San Rd. I have a similar book and as KJS pointed out, you really need to hear a Thai person say the phrase. Even if you get the sounds right, you won't be understood because the tones and general flow of the words would be wrong. http://www.learningthai.com/ will show you how to pronounce all the basic stuff.

Does anyone have any ideas about what to do with all these 1 baht coins I keep accumulating? I'd like to give them to a soup kitchen or something provided they have a collection box. I feel like walking in somewhere and handing them a bag of coins would be a dick move.

LOLZ There happens to be a completely [censored] cashier working at CarreFour (was really rude to me several times for no apparent reason on different trips).

Soz, when Puk and I went to get a new bed set for our new House (around 1500THB), I specifically waited in line for this cashier and paid out like 700+ of it coins and the rest in 20 baht notes. It was quite hilarious watching him count and recount and recount. It seemed he's not well liked by his colleagues either cus they were pissing themselves laughing whilst he counted. So rather than come off as yet another [censored] farang move it was great entertainment for the rest of the employees.

PS I was considerate enough to warn all the those who tried get in line behind me that they should pick a different cashier. Only one got pissed off (and he was a standard issue, 50ish, fat, I am ruler of Thailand, German). The Thais in line actually stayed in line to witness the event.

PPS WhoIam can attest that I am insanely laid back/calm/respectful when dealing with Thais of all walks of life so for me to do this this guy was clearly a CNUT.

Well I for sure just got ripped off for a taxi and now I'm paying 20 baht for 5 minutes of internet access just to tell 2+2 about it. I was going from Khaosan Rd to Hualamphong Station. I heard it was a 30 min drive (like airport to Khaoson), so when the guy quoted me 300 baht and he was in a metered taxi I figured whatever I'll not make the trouble 30 min ride would be close to 300 baht. So I'm riding and all is good and then he stops. I'm like wtf but alas it's hualampong. Probably got fleeced for $8US or so. time running out bye

KSR to Hualampong has never cost me more then 40 baht. Maybe 50 baht if there is a little traffic.

Obviously if he is quoting you a price instead of using the meter then he is ALWAYS ripping you off.

Also, someone mentioned that they needed hookah coal, Suk. soi 3 and 5 are where all the indians hang out and they sell that crap in the back of the sois.

ALmost every ATM machine I've seen in Thailand has the like 15 different logos of types of cards that work so I'd tentatively say, Yes. My gf's ATM card (issued from Bangkok Bank has the PLus/Cirrus/etc stuff on it)

I have also seen several Western Union Outlets over here (not sure bout moneygram).

currently in BKK for 2 months, was wondering a good place to buy high quality fake watches?

I have a friend who got a great one from china, and I had a look around silom and mbk but the watches don't look *really* good.

Any suggestions? :-)

currently in BKK for 2 months, was wondering a good place to buy high quality fake watches?
I have a friend who got a great one from china, and I had a look around silom and mbk but the watches don't look *really* good.
   Any suggestions? :-)

That's funny, ofdabeat and I were just talking about this today. He knows of some places in China but nothing here. I assume you mean watches in the several hundred dollar range, right?

Shameless addition/promotion of friends place in Patong.

Patong Hotel

If anyone is visiting Patong, this place is close to the beach and nightlife and I can get you a decent disoucnt on their advertised rates.

(Owner is woman who spent a week with my gf at the temple and pretty nice/straightforward)

Normal english but slowly and keeping it simple.

Ex to a hot fruit seller : Hey honey pie could you please give me one kilogram of fresh rambutan?

becomes : Sawatdee kap, one kilo of rambutan please, kap.

I'm lucky in that I've been able to talk to Americans on an almost daily basis while in SE Asia. I still find myself saying things like "where you go?" to other farang. My friend here (American) lives in Buenos Aires and speaks with a Spanish accent when he talks to Thai or Lao people in English.

I just came back from the ladyboy bar in Nana Plaza. There was this one which looked like Jennifer Love Hewitt and had the best [censored] ever. She spoke quite good English as well. I bought her a drink but told her that I had no sexual intentions at all. I just wanted to talk and learn more about the ladyboy culture. She kept insisting we went to the hotel upstairs and I just had to try a ladyboy. I kept saying I was tired and kept asking her questions like are you post op or pre op, how many customers do you get a day, etc. She got kinda annoyed and kept on asking why won't I leave with her. I then said I really think you are beautiful but I just want to talk. In the end, she kept quiet and looked really sad. I feel kinda bad. I told her I would come back and buy her another drink another day and left.

FAO Degen, great GREAT post. I'm trying to read it all but more pages get added than I read everyday ;P

I'd looked into this previously but some advice would be great. How far would 650k THB stretch to? I figure I could live on roughly 44k THB a month or is this being pessismistic. I know you said a little higher than that?

I know its all subjective but really I want to know how quickly you blow money over there as I'd have a steady income but no more than $1000 a month.

Keep the good work up anyway!

It all depends where you want to live and what you want to do. If you want to live in a nice Bangkok apartment, go to good clubs all the time, and bang hookers every night, then $1k/month isn't going to cut it. If lounging by the beach and drinking at local bars is more your thing, that's certainly doable. Or do what I did which is move to Vientiane where $1000 will let you do anything you want. I personally prefer it to Thailand but I think most here would disagree.

If you are looking to stay in Asia, I'd suggest East Timor (Indonesia area) or Solomon Islands.

If you are looking for cheapest in general, I'd suggest Malawi or Somalia.

To put things in prospective, Thailand's GDP per capita is about 10x higher than these countries. Thus the piss poor economy suggests much lower standard of living. So, I'm guessing you can get by on a few hours of 10NL

It definitely happens, just like in most countries. Obviously I'm probably not going to meet my future wife from some drunken hookup but...

Also, I'm in Laos, not in Thailand, the sex capital of Asia. For example, last week I meet a girl in a Lao club where I'm one of two falang and maybe half the people are gay or ladyboys. And just to avoid the obvious joke, no, she was not a ladyboy. If you're a hooker, this is clearly not the place you go to meet rich white guys. I've picked up girls before in Asia and Western countries, and obviously "hey, before we go back to my place, you're not a hooker, right?" would be a deal breaker in most cases.

Last night I randomly met Thai film star Arnas Lapanich in a late-night Vientiane restaurant. Everyone was fawning over him so I assume he's a pretty big star. I chatted with him for a bit and found him to be a very friendly down-to-earth guy. Some random Lao girl wanted a picture of us together (?!) so I'll post it if I run into her and can get her to send it to me.

Running into celebrities is probably normal for you guys that live in LA, but the whole situation was very strange and Entourage-like to me.

Degen was banned. After Degen was banned, he used some of his gimmick accounts to try to drum up support for his account not being banned or something. His gimmick account cited the longevity of this stupid thread as some sort of testament to his worthiness.

One of his gimmick accounts was named "Falang": http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...part=1&vc=1

I guess I had no idea what a Falang or Farang0 is, and I just assumed it was stome stupid thing Degen made up. A google search shows it might be some Thai thing, so maybe you're just some independent Thai enthusiast who also chose a similar sounding username.

Anyone going to be on Phangan for the full moon?

Anyone been to Kanchaburi or cities like that around Bangkok?

I tried boots and the places in pat pong.

if you can't find any melatonin in smaller dosages, you could always chop up the tablets, won't cause any problems, or just eat the 3mg tablets. your body just rids itself of extra melatonin that it doesn't "process" or whatever, with no bad side effects at all.

out of curiosity, about how many 2+2ers are in proximity to Thailand right now (Thailan + Laos, + Cambodia, maybe even Vietnam)?

How many plan on going in the next year? Like seriously planning, (research stuff, know you will have free time to travel, saving up $, etc...)

Is it common for 2+2ers to not only meet up, but to hang out for multiple days?

I want to go eventually, possibly as soon as spring or summer 08.

The 2+2 community over there is a factor in my trip going. It would be much more comforting knowing I would have some degenerates who could either show me around, or guide me in my travel.

Hell, down the line, if our travels are success, we can pitch in on a property and work out a time share type of deal, and have a 2+2 club house!

I came here 1.5 months ago and have spent most of my time in BKK.

I met up with a couple 2p2ers for a beer and found that their apartment/hotel was a lot better than mine and moved into the same building. We have hung out/ gone out together a lot since.

Though I cannot quote a number for how many are in the region, I would say that there definitely isn't a 'community'. Maybe I haven't dug enough. The problem here is that there are not too many long term expats that a typical 2p2er would want to hang out with. There are a lot of young westerners here, but they are on a 1-2 week vacation. Most of the permanents are older men here for one reason or another (see: sex trade).

So, I kinda wish there was more of a community. I lived in Buenos Aires for 3 years (and will be going back) and my core group of friends were all pros. Though all were not necessarily 2p2ers, it was an optimal situation, as we were very like minded and had similar interests.

On a side note: I am heading to Bali for a month. Anybody living there? Anybody wanna grab a beer, eat some fondue, play some croquet, etc...?

If i take 3mg the next day i can't think properly...

Also, you're not supposed to chop them up because the tablet coating should result in a reasonably slow release into the stomach.

btw, if anybody wants to meet up in bkk in the next couple of weeks for a beer or similar (going back to australia for a bit). pm me?

PS: please take notice : i won't barfine in gogo's for at least a few months, too much freaking drama. Anyone up for a massage?

Hotmark is from (I think) Lebanon. He is locked out, as is his friend from Beirut. Its not a glitch, they have confirmed via email that they are not accepting players from my location, however they have not verified if they are only not accepting players with a Thai address, or anyone logging in from a Thai IP address.

Around khao san no, probably the worst value for food in the whole thailand. Dependaing of what kind of food and what budget i can give you a few adresses no problem.

I would definitely recommend calling PP and clarifying that you are in vacation and playing in thailand. previously, this was the policy and you were allowed to play from thailand with a foriegn address after you confirmed it with them via phone.

yoo,

i read that there's a kite surfing company set up on chaweng, samui. can any of you guys in samui confirm it's there?

planning a short trip in sept. seen samui too many times already but if that's there i'll have to visit for at least 3 days. i think onwards to ko tao (been diving there before but never visited) to get away from the tourist trap ways, any advances on places to go instead of ko tao. shooting for chilled out, food, some nightlife, will do some diving, etc.

ty ty ty.

The little research I've done tells me that December is when the weather starts to get good, marking the beginning of the "high" season. How much do prices increase at this time? Same with tourism - does it get really packed? e.g. will I be able to snorkle in peace or will there be hundreds of other tourists snorkling too?

Could someone please clarify the Visa rules regarding the whole 90-day thing? What's the best solution if I wanna get there around December and leave in March? Should I just cut the trip to 12/15 - 3/15 to avoid the hassle of having to leave the country for Visa reasons?

Also, I'm sure this has been answered before, but what's the recommended method of renting an apartment for 3 months? Are craigslist listings worth looking at? I'm looking at some of the apts listed there and the cool looking 1BRs seem to be in the 20-25,000 baht range ($700-850 USD) - is that to be expected, or do better deals exist?

1. Get 60-day visa from Thai consolate in your country. 2. After 60 days, go on Visa run and get 30-day visa. 3. After 30 days, go on Visa run and get 30-day visa. 4. Repeat 3. 5. If you want to stay longer, go to Thai consulate in foreign capital and get 60-day visa.

   1. Get 60-day visa from Thai consolate in your country.
   2. After 60 days, go to the Immigration Department (in most major cities) and get a 30 day extension
   3. After 30 days, fly to Singapore, Hong Kong, Manilla, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpoor or ??? and get a new 60 day visa
   4. Repeat 2 and 3 until you get sick of Thailand, die of Aids or can find a way to get a one year visa

There are two short visas:

1. Tourist visa - you need to get this at an actual embassy/consulate. This is 60 days and u can extend it for 30 days. After this, you can go to Kuala Lumpoor, Penang, etc whatever to get the same thing and come back.

2. Visa on Arival - As your coming in, they give you this, so you don't need to do anything before hand. It is only valid for 30 days, and after that, you can head to any border (up north we go to Mae Sai) and get another 30 day visa. NB They did change the rules last october saying that after 90 days on a Visa on Arrival, you can not get it again for 90 days after that (3 x 30 day stamps max per 180 day period)

So, if you are out of your country now, I would suggest getting a 60+30 Tourist visa (some countries you can get a year, so try for that).

Now, if you want to stay for a long term, when you arrive, ask them to NOT stamp and use this. Get the visa on arrival. Then do a border run 2 more times. After this, head to a border (or maybe u can just go to immigration, i dunno) and tell them to use your Tourist Visa. This will last 3 momths (2 months plus go to immigration to extend for 3rd month) and then you can go and do 3 more monthly border runs. That gives you 9 months without leaving the country other than a border run.

After that, you need to head to one of those countries to get a new 60+30 Tourist visa, then when that is used up, do 3 border runs. Rinse and repeat every 6 months.

Or if you don't mind travelling to another country, you can just get a new Tourist visa every 3 months.

I think there are lots of western countries where you can get a 1 year visa. Like the UK, probably Australia (where I'm from), but it might need to be your home country.

If money is no object (ie like trying to buy a 5-yr visa), then going to ur home country to get a new yearly each year is probably not a bad bet (tho someewhat expensive for me when I don't even wanna go back there just for a visa).

There is also permanent residency which is like 5k USD or something but you have to have lived here on 1-yearly visas for a few years first.

I think they did away with that visa or were trying to. Besides why spend 1 million baht on a visa when you can spend 5,000 baht every 3 months to fly to Singapore or Hong Kong for the weekend?

I will be flying back to Bangkok sometimes in about 6-8 weeks and need a place to stay. Im looking for a 2 bedroom place around the BTS. I prefer the Rachadamri / Sathorn / Silom area. Can anybody currently staying in this general area chime in on what they are paying. Previously I paid 25k a month for a 1 bedroom in a condo behing the Four Seasons but I want to look around a bit more this time and find something a little different.

Hahahaha. With that 25k you can travel half the world. Or you can spend 20% of that and go back to your home country once a year and get a yearly visa.

ya well, whatever. to some people $25k isn't a lot of money and its worth that not to be forced to leave the country all the time, get free massages/facials/country club privelages, airport concierge service etc etc.

one thing that gets lost in all of the budget talk about thailand is the fact that there are quite a few expats who have a great deal of money to spend and live a very luxurious life. top end condo's in bangkok go for $5000+ per month, there are loads of places to eat a $150 kobe steak, Gaysorn Plaza looks like something you'd see on Park Avenue, with every big designer you could think of.

If you want to stay in Thailand for 12 months without having to leave then signup at one of the bigger language schools for a 1 year program. It will cost about 30,000 baht and you will get 3 sessions a week each about 3 hours.

You dont actually have to goto class though once you have your visa. So pay the 30k for the visa and then your home free.

I'll probably be going to Bangkok in the next few weeks for a visa run/mini vacation. While I'm there I want to get a complete physical--tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, STDs, liver function, etc. It's not that I'm a hypochondriac, it's just that the health care system in Laos sucks and I want to make sure everything is ok with me physically. How would I go about doing this? Just go see a doctor? Anyone know a good one? I should also probably get my teeth cleaned so if anyone's had a good experience with a doctor or dentist just PM me.

If you're serious, just call your doctor and say you want a physical including bloodwork. They'll listen to your heart, take your blood pressure, look in your ears, etc, then draw some blood. They'll send you the results and your doctor will tell you if anything is off. I think pretty much all insurance covers a yearly physical.

Ok, I'm sold...I didn't read the whole thing, but still, I'm sold.

That said, my gf and I are going to be coming to Thailand for a month or so in Feb 2008.

What island(s) should we be looking to get a "hut" on and I'd kill for links/ideas/suggestions, fellas.

Gonna start getting our passport's next week

Lastly, for 1 month, for the both of us, how much should we budget and do the islands have reliable internet service?

Meh, your mentioning it doesn't bother me at all. Are "farang" hated because they're Americans looking for a quick fk? I have multiple friends who go to Thailand to do this, and they're all pretty good looking/successful. They just want to bang hot broads on the cheap, said broads apparently being in abundant supply. Hopefully I'll make it over there someday and be scorned by the locals too.

What I described will be harder in Thailand then other countries because there are more tourists, but there are many parts of Bangkok where there are very white faces and large Universities. If you read this thread there is tons of information.

What do you guys do about US taxes etc? I promise to go back thru this thread, between now and Feb. but long story short, what's the trick?

We (gf and I) have talked about just taking a year or so and just traveling abroad, but I have yet to make the transition to "full time" poker etc... I understand the tax implications if you are IN THE US PLAYING POKER, but what about if you're traveling abroad and the money isn't made in the US, nor comes into the US?

thoughts/help?

If you are outside of the USA for at least 330 days in any given tax year then your first 80k is 100% tax free. There are certain limitations to this law though so you should read up on the specifics. 'Self employment income' is not covered by this break. Im not sure if poker winnings falls under this category so if it doesnt then you should be home free.

The tax break alone is more then enough reason to live in Thailand if you are making more then 80k playing.

Additionally, under certain circumstances you can deduct your housing costs among other things. So if you make more then 80k you could still take some nice deductions off the rest.

(My uncle is a CPA and did my taxes and I paid almost nothing while living in Thailand for 2+ years)

Ok good stuff. So it may just behoove us to hire a CPA to do this for us and let me know, before we go, what we need to do etc.

Thanks bro.

Just read that :

Saudis Ban Thai Tourism... Due to wine, women & crime

Based on an article from Arab News

Travellers and travel agents were not informed of a ban on Saudis travelling to Thailand and so many Saudis, who visited the country at the beginning of the summer, have returned to face questioning from the Kingdomís authorities.

Thailand has for the past 12 years been on a list of countries that Saudis are not allowed to visit. The list includes Israel, Iraq and Bosnia.

Many Saudis still continue to apply for tourist visas to Thailand, which are easily obtainable. There are no direct flights from the Kingdom to Thailand. Connecting flights are available in Dubai and Qatar. The Thailand Tourism Commission states it received 9,000 Saudis tourists in 2006. People this summer have once again been asked not to visit Thailand unless for business reasons, a rule that many members of the public are unaware of.

People believe the ban has been reinforced because of men who visit Thailand to drink alcohol, visit prostitutes and then be robbed and at times murdered.

The administration has stressed that those who have travelled to Thailand as tourists and come back will be questioned about why they travelled there. They would also be prevented from travelling for six months to three years and fined SR5,000 for breaking the ban.

However, not all visitors to Thailand have been questioned on return but an employee at a travel agency said: Those who have not been questioned will most likely be questioned when they renew their passports.

Lolz

It's definitely not always easy to tell.

Some signs: - adams apple (LOOK FOR IT!) - tallness (thai chicks are almost always short-ish) - those who seem 'overly effeminate' are often overcompensating for their lack of BEING A WOMAN - the voice - something not quite right that you can't quite put your finger on

Also, from what I've heard, don't accept drinks from (seeming to be) chicks at bars - katooey are known to spike ur drink and u end up in the morning not knowing much of what happened or how it happened, and with a wallet cleared out (and if your lucky you don't get aids - which is much more common in thailand, in particular among gays/katooeys)

I am now 100% going to Thailand at the end of the year because of this thread. I got the Pimsleur Thai language set, and I have the brand-new (just published this month) Lonely Planet Thailand in the mail from Amazon. I am so hyped it's ridiculous. I plan on staying 90 days, and traveling everywhere. The only constraint is money, but I can live cheap and I don't drink.

One thing that hasn't really been addressed by this thread unless I missed it is any contemplative resources. Thailand is one of the strongholds of Theravada Buddhism, which is the tradition that my meditation practice comes from. I am not so much interested in seeing temples and so forth, though I'm sure that I will, but in maybe studying with Thai teachers for some period of time. Apparently Goenka Vipassana offers the same 10-day course that I have taken here but I would like to do something different.

Previously unmentioned ladyboy detection technique: ladyboys tend to hang out with other ladyboys, so that cute girl hanging out with a bunch of ladyboys isn't a girl. Same thing if you see a pair and one is an obvious ladyboy.

Here's a useful link for you guys: list of durex condoms . I never know what the hell I'm buying because the labels are either in Thai or they're called something like "pleasuremax" and don't have a description.

very easy if you're outgoing. find an irish bar, live music bar etc where backpackers will be hanging out and you'll probably see a line of 10 individuals leaning on the bar not speaking to each other, this will be the backpackers who arrived that day and haven't drank enough yet.

just spark up a chat about which thai beers/whiskey/buckets to try. all else fails, you could get a thai gf in minutes, failing that taxi drivers will show you a great night out.

Also, for the ladyboys, check the hands, they have big man hands, not like the usual very small thai girls hands.

I'm heading out to Bangkok at the end of September to meet my friend who has some family out there, were looking to get a place together for about three months. I've looked around online and hes talked to his brothers some (locals) but I'm finding a huge variation in price and not a whole lot of info on quality.

We're looking for a reasonable but not lavish 2 bedroom near a BTS stop, the location doesn't have to be so great as long as its easy to get around. We want to keep it around 25,000 baht, furnished, with internet and all that.

I've found a few links that could work, but I've also read in here that the online listings are ripoffs, any suggestions?

It's been over a year since I stayed here but at the "Centre Point" serviced Apts' on Petchburi Road, Soi 15 I had a room for 29,000 a month. It was a large room with small kitchen and on-suite Bathroom. Fully furnished with cable T.v and free internet access. Good room service, nice clean swimming pool and a small but decent Gym. I had to haggle the price down from 32,000 though and (please note that I walked in and negotiated )I paid for two months and gave a months deposit if I recall correctly. The walk to the BTS was a full 10 minutes. Outside the grounds was Burger King, Swenson ice cream, Pizza hut, a 7/11 as well as local street vendours during the day. It is only a 10 minute Taxi drive to the infamous "Nana" area where I am sure you will venture, however 10 minute Taxi rides in BKK can become 30! However I would like to suggest you book a Hotel for a couple of nights and then have a look when you get there so you get a feel for the places you look at. Also you are in a better posistion to haggle, just be polite and smile and you should be able to save a few Baht. A few suggestions for your Hotel for the first few nights would be www.Amari.com/Boulevard

www.landmarkbangkok.com

www.majesticsuites.com

www.ConradHotels.com/Bangkok

and I have to mention this one because, well everyone has stayed here! www.nanahotel.co.th.

All above Hotels are in the Nana area and next to the BTS. With the acception of the last one they are a good place to stay whilst finding somewhere more permanent. Hope this helps. Kob Khun Khrap.

Wow... a bit under 1000$ a month for a room 10min from the bts. Sorry sir but you are a fish at renting.

Yes, thank you for your consructive opinion, we await your suggestions. I do accept though that price maybe on the top side, however I am from the UK and at that time the exchange rate was healthy at 70 baht to the pound sterling and I felt having looked at various other appartments it was the best value for what I wanted at the time. All said and done it all comes down to personal choice and where your going to feel the most comfortable and for that reason it is probably a good idea to get out and about to check some places over. A copy of the Bangkok post been a good place to start.

Right, back to my pond.

The bangkok post is probably the best place to find overpriced apartment aimed at farang on expat packages.

You paid way too much and made it sound like if it was a good deal. It's misleading for newbies. ( anyone with some common sense would not pay 1000 for an apartment in bangkok especially far from the BTS and in a inconvenient area )

There are a lot of better options all over the place and if somebody want the info they can pm me ( like the last 4 guys looking for a place in bkk did )

ofdabeat,

CentrePoint are really nice apartments. There are all sorts of apartments for > $1,000 in BKK. If you want modern furnishings, a nice view and other such amenities, and are willing to pay for it...CentrePoint and the other serviced and non-serviced luxury apartments are a good way to go.

As I said in a prior post, there are loads of places all the way up to $5,000+ per month in Bangkok. You can also slum it in a $100 a month place if you want. The choice is yours.

The fact that this guy chose for nicer digs doesn't make him a fish, it makes him a guy who looked at the relative cost of what he was getting in BKK as opposed to what he was getting at home, and chose to spend a comparable amount for something way nicer.

If you want to look at the absolute cost of an apartment and get one for what is considered cheap in Thailand, you can do that. Some might call you a fish at economics, life, reality or whatever...but at least you wouldn't be a fish of apartment shopping in Bangkok

Lol sure the centrepoint is a very good deal for 1000 bucks no not at all I can show you at least 10 apartments better/similar in the center of the city for 15k max a month. For 25k you can rent a 3-4 bedroom townhouse in Sathorn...

I think you have absolutly no idea of the apartment/condo rental market in bangkok atm...

Since i got a few pm asking " what can i rent for 1000bucks"

My first choice would probably be the riverside Win long apartment( next to the oriental/shangri la and bts ), for 1k ( 30 bahts ) you can have the "presidential" suite, sorry no pics. But here is a pic of the executive suite :

not too shabby. Plenty of other choices if i have time i'll post a list.

Dude if you have a lot of time (which you do), just find a forest monastery, walk in, and ask if you can stay. If that particular one can't help you it's likely that they will direct you to someone that can. Will be a million times better than any course that's offered at some city monastery where the monks all have cell phones.

I think price varies a lot in BKK by locations. It generally costs a lot more to live in the city center although why you would want to is another matter it's so crowded, congested and polluted. That Riverside Win apt looks a cut above even the Centerpoint Serviced apartments I stayed at on Lumpini near all the Embassies.

LOLZA hadn't seen this.

ESP LOLZA since an uber drunk Saudi guy bought me a beer at one of the "after hours" beer cooler stands on the beach a couple of nights ago. As soon as he found I was 'Merican he couldn't stop saying "FK Bush and FK Saudi gubment! We, the peoples of the countries be friends!" He was also uber thankful that I informed his super drunk son that the "Lady" he had chosen for the evening was in fact a katoey.

Mine worked fine since my power adapters for both take a variety of currents and voltages. For example, the brick that powers my laptop says Input 100-240v, 50-60hz. Depending on what country you're from, you may need an adapter so you can actually plug it in because the shape is different.

Travel health insurance is really cheap if you're young. I would just get some. I'm not sure about this, but I think you get taken to the crap public hospital if you don't have insurance in case of an emergency.

heres degen's reply " I have a few questions regarding moving to thailand

-Is there any other way than registring for a class to stay there a year? (where can i find a website to register for such class?)

www.thaivisa.com i see ads for this on there and thats the place to go for info

-Which site would you recommand to find a studio downtown bangkok that is in a secured building w/ internet, gym, pool and that looks a little baller(furnished)? Can i rent it before actualy showing up? if not.. where do i stay the first nights? random hotel?

post in the thailand thread in the Travel forum on 2+2 for this, those guys know a lot more about this than me

-Cellphones? quick overview? where to get one?

MBK or anywhere. buy a sim card at 7-11, this is very easy and cheap

-electronics? will my computer work there and my 2 screens? im not just bringing my laptop for a year.. or are computers cheap there?

make sure you get an adaptor or you will blow your power supply, but ya it will work. computers are far more expensive and you cannot find good monitors, you'll be happy you brought that stuff

-honestly, is it hard to learn basic thai when you live there?

not if you have a thai girlfriend or hang out w/ thai women a lot.

-Do hotels/apts charge more when you are 2 to live in? Can you live in a upper class suite with someone else for about 500-600$ each a month?

for sure, check the thread. $1000 a month total will get you a very nice furnished 2 bedroom apartment in a great area, centrally located.

-cars... how much are cars there? like skylines or wahtever you can only get imported here? can you rent them ? if so do you have to pay much in advance?

everybody takes taxi's and the skytrain, both very cheap. taxi's are insanely cheap. cars are v expensive and you wouldn't want to drive there anyway, roads are crazy.

-Paying in advance, same goes for hotels/apts... do you really need to pay a lot in advance?

3 months or so for a 6 month to 1 year lease.

-Health care. How does it work?

doctors are cheap and hospitals are high quality. ive never looked into health insurance, thaivisa.com would have that info

That's all i can think of. Thanks!

good luck "

So anyways, is there anyone else thinking of moving soon? If you have no one, we can always meet up and do this as a team at first at least. I am in canada but would be willing to meet up in the states

I would really like to finaly have someone to talk to in real life that is actualy as good as me or better at poker.

What is your budget? how long will you stay?
Stay a while in an hotel you want to check the places yourself before renting.

You can get the adress for your when you book it?

As far as taxis, it said earlier in the thread to get one with a meter.

From the airport use ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY the METERED taxis and make sure they turn ON the meter.

Get a local phone number from the hotel you booked into. Also get it's address. If showing the printed address doesn't do the trick, call the hotel's phone number and have the receptionist talk directly to the taxi driver to give him direction.

No idea on this one but I see tons of cosmetic surgery clinics even down here in the islands.

I grew up in NYC, have lived in Seattle, D.C., San Diego and more recently London for 5 years.

Living on Phuket Island, which has all necesary amenities, AND beaches, jungle, mountains is just far more relaxing/suiting to me these days.

hey guys first of all thx for the thread, i have a few question i am sure a lot already been covered but this is a hell of a thread ...

Iam almost 20 and iam german fwiw.

So iam willing to move to thailand at 1. november and stay there for long. I am planning to stay at least 1 year but ive never been there before so take that fwiw.

Because i need a stable internet connection of course i thought i have to decide weather i want to stay in pattaya or BKK at least for the first 6 months and since i want to live at the sea i thought pattaya would be a good start and jomtiem beach would be a fair place in pattaya. Id like to hear what u think of that and if u have any suggestion about other nice places with a stable internet connection.

Since i travel alone i want to get a (baller) condo with large balcony, pool table or jacuzzi or /and stuff like that. From what ive seen at the internets prices for those are insane, i mean thyere still cheap but not what i expected to see when i read this thread.Of course its because they want to sell if for rich farangs but i have no clue how to avoid that. I found houses are cheaper then condos in proportion, is that true?

Anyone would like to help me to get settled?

Would be really aprecciated.

Personally I got vaxed for everything under the sun when I was in military so I camover here without doing anymore.

I was in Pattaya from the end of December thru the middle of February. In both the hotel and my apartment, a 6 unit building where my landlord provided wireless to the tenants utilizing his architecture firms internet access, I was unable to have internet service reliable enough to play poker. There was an earthquake off the coast of Taiwan at the end of December that may be the cause, and the problems it caused may have been fixed; however, I currently have the opinion that playing online poker from Pattaya may not be possible. Even in my hotel in BKK (stayed from mid Nov. to mid Dec. prior to the earthquake) at times I was unable to play online as the connection would simply get too slow during certain times of the day. The problems while in Pattaya were slow service and frequent disconnects.

If you never been to thailand it's probably better to start in bangkok ( more 2+2ers, more stuff to do and a more "normal" lifestyle ). Pattaya is whores city and the full time residents will rarely be under 50 years old.

You can go to the beach from bangkok ( pattaya or hua hin ) in 2h30 by bus for about 2 euros. Pattaya is great for the WE but for living there you have to really love the hoes.

But our main concern is the internet connection. Can we get a stable one ?

We found that website anyone know anything about that kind of satellite internet connection?

It's expensive and I'd bet a significant amount of money that it's garbage quality. If this is your first time going to SE Asia, you'll probably pack too much clothing. Take some out of your bag and throw a can or two of whey in there instead.

Connection is pretty solid in Pattaya. Have you ever been there? If not maybe you should reconsider. Great for shagging week ends but living there is another story.

Hey ofdabead, our mutual friend has mentioned a "hooker from hell" story several times and still hasn't told me about it. What happened?

Ifear, I would just take the whey protein with you instead of worrying about tracking some down. To amend my previous "legal drugs in Thailand" post, you can get gear with absolutely no problem if that's what you're into.

Standby for the ex-GF from hell story soon.

Puk's lost her absolute mind and I'm physically and mentally prepping myself to either be attacked by a knife weilding mental woman or a herd of hired ya ba junkies.

I think my odds of survival are 90/10 against knife weilding woman and 50/50 against the ya ba herd

Embassies in many European countries aren't so strict about the visa rules (although that may be changing). I got my one year non-immigrant type "O" visa just by walking into the embassy and saying 'Hi! I'd like to play poker in Bangkok for a year' without any paperwork required.

Lol, you went back to that place? He just told me the story and it's no big deal since it was his last night in bkk. It would have been a much different story in Cambodia or something. The key to dealing with crazy Thai people is to keep saying "mai khao jai" (I don't understand) until they finally go away.

I know about the visa rules puplished at thaivisa.com. Just call the german Thai embassy in Stuttgart, Hamburg or Essen. In their defintion of "O" (other) also falls "tourist".

You wont find these information offically published on the internets i guess, i just read it in a german thailand forum then called the embassy and they approved it.YOu just send them a mail with ur passport flight ticket the fees and the bank statement etc and youll get your visa.

My wife and I are flying out tonight!!!

Here is our schedule:

sept 8 - 12: Koh Samui sept 12 - 15: Koh Phangan sept 15 - 18: Phuket sept 19: Chiang Dao sept 20 - 22: Hill tribe trek sept 22 - 27: Chiang Mai sept 27 - ???: Bangkok (where we will live)

If you live in (or have been to) any of these areas and there is something we absolutely must do or see, let me know. Also, let me know if you want to hook up for a beer. It will be fun to meet some 2ers out there. I think I will end up living pretty close to fellow SSSH brassmonkey in BKK.

Hey guys one last request.. as i have said im really stressed about my visa and for some reason my brain just seems to block there thats the little page for my country http://www.magma.ca/%7Ethaiott/visa3.htm

Just want to be 100% sure i understand it completely.

So, i have to mail my passport and the form with a second passport picture that isnt the same as the one in my passport. i think i have to send 80$(money order) + xpress post send back envelope i have to choose tourist visa as non immigrant seems to be only for buisnesses.

They say we do not accept courrier services... wtf is a courier service? i thought all fast mail was a courier service

So then 2 days later i get my visa which is good for 60days. That visa is the one that i can renew for an other 60days @ at the border right?

So i guess you can just get 60days visas every 60days if you dont care about paying? They say that the 30days extentions are not always given, its at the discretion of the officer. Are 60days visa almost always given out, and has anyone in here lived off those for like 6months, so 3 times?

Yes, as long as you don't mind going to the Thai consulate in a foreign capital. It takes 2 working days, but some places you can drop off your passport in the morning it pick it up the following afternoon. Cost is 1000 baht. If you wanted to, you could get to Vientiane for under 500 baht by train not including the Lao visa fee that varies depending on country of origin. Round-trip flights are 5 or 6k baht and I imagine this is similar for other nearby capitals.

I just went through this as well and was rather sketched out at the thought of sending my passport away. I wrote an email to check on the status of my visa last week, no response, kinda nervous. Yesterday it comes in the mail, no problem.

Of course I don't live in Canada ...

If your currency is us dollar buy at home the change will kill you. If not Thailand may be a bit cheaper but not much. Middle range stuff will be quite cheaper but top of the line not.

The pills look like generic Immodium. Wow, you're really tearing through that valium. Did they just give it to you or did you ask for it? The powder just contains a a bunch of electrolytes (like Gatoraid) to replenish the ones you've lost through, um, fluids.

I just told them to fix my foodpoison. What i have googled thats the most basic "set" they give to you. The antibiotics even will fix chlamydia if you have one . After taking the pills and 40hours sleep i'm feeling like a newborn baby jesus.

Unless you plan to go in the south it won't be rainy anymore. And it's not really rainy even now.

About as hard as finding a virgin in Nana Plaza.

edit: They have a different name for it. Just go into a pharmacy and tell them you want "yaa baa."

That would be a really bad idea, you could potentially spend years in prison. Maybe try to get a prescription and then make sure you'd be allowed to bring some. I'm not sure "how" illegal it would be, but there's no way it's worth risk. Just drink red bull, it's really cheap.

I'll be in Bangkok in 3 weeks I found some websites listing apartments and hotels at what seems to be a good price, esp. the last one: http://www.bangkokapartments.info/ http://www.thaiapartment.com/ http://en.9apartment.com/

but if anyone has first hand experience I'm a taker cuz I don't really feel like checking out 50 different hotels on my first day there looking to spend ~12k thb/month max (not including water/electricity/internet...)

By Rosalind Russell

BANGKOK (Reuters Life!) - He may be old, flabby, and far from handsome, but a Western husband can bring a lifetime of happiness, according to a new book advising Thai women on how to meet and marry foreign men.

"Foreign Boyfriend, Foreign Husband", with chapters written by Thai women already married to "farang", or foreigners, sells a Cinderella-style dream to young Thai women hoping for a passport to a better life.

The book is packed with tips on dating, kissing, sexual positions, weddings, living abroad and bringing up children.

An early chapter gives basic advice on how to meet your foreign man: hang out in a bar, hotel or department store, be alone, wear a sexy dress, make eye contact, and, if you get the chance, tell a funny story.

   Quote:
Once you've found your boyfriend, follow these rules to make him fall in love and marry you: always look good, have sex with him whenever he asks, don't be jealous of other women, don't be too demanding and do all the housework.

A certain stigma has always been attached to poor Thai women marrying foreigners. At worst it is seen as an extension of a red-light transaction, an exchange of youth and beauty for money and security.

But the book portrays a more romantic vision. Western men, it enthuses, are kind and respectful and less likely to have the bad habits sometimes associated with Thai men which include drinking, adultery and violence.

"Thai men may have sweet words," it says, "but they want to sleep with your sister too."

While your foreign man may be years -- even decades -- older than you, see that as a good thing. "An old man is very kind. An old man has more money. An old man is faithful," the guide says.

And foreigners are much more likely to accept a divorcee or widow, it claims, women not considered ideal wives in traditional Thai society.

Written in simple Thai, and available at bookstore chains across Thailand, the slim tome is aimed at impressionable, uneducated women and would be seen as a joke by many Thai women, said Aomjai Sarkhampee, a 27-year-old teacher in Bangkok.

"We don't believe that marrying a farang can make our dreams come true," she said. "We want more in life."

But in rural Thailand, finding a foreign husband is a common aspiration for young women. In the poor northeast, an influx of more than 15,000 foreign men has brought an economic windfall and a welcome alternative to back-breaking work in the paddy fields.

"Foreign men are not handsome, but they have more money," sums up the book.

Actually I'd be happy to if there's a place to cook. There's going to be fingers chopped off if you try to interfere though.

KKF, sounds like you really need that rb FWIW, none of the people I know personally in Thailand (some of whom are active on this thread) play on Party. You can try emailing Degen since he's an affiliate and would know about this.

A nice story for you guys: ( well worth a read IMO ) "All hiss and arrogance and sex power. She made me wilt." (Fanta)

KRYPTONITE IN WHITE

I'm heading for the big glass lobby door of the AA Hotel and before I get to it I see an apparition of femininity, and sexuality, and smoldering ego coming down the center of the soi from the 2nd Road end that just stops me in my tracks. She is about 5'10" in heels, serpentine curved, sexually vibrating like a tuning fork, and clothed in a bare shoulders-to-knee micron thin white dress that looks like it had to pulled on with pliers. White heels.

My hand does not even get to the door handle. I am just frozen, transfixed, hypnotized. And then it hits me. I saw this same woman going up Soi 8 a couple of nights ago. I was sitting at one of those kinda open air bars with a nice Thai lady when this woman in white appeared walking up the center of the soi. I could not help but stare and the woman I was with did not take offence. "Bootiful lady", she said. I agreed and the two of us watched her walk all the way up the soi like two old fishermen staring at a lights blazing luxury liner going by. Most of our lives are bluff and bluster but once in a while you just know that your tawdry life and your common thoughts have been trumped. Gods and goddesses walk amongst us and every now and then you get to see one.

And why in each case was she walking in the center of the soi; the other night on Soi 8 and on this night on Soi 13? Walking down the centers of sois is dangerous because of motorbike and car traffic. No sensible person would do it. Thais know better. She is walking down the centers of the sois in Pattaya in this gaspingly beautiful white dress and white heels because that is her job. Her job on earth is to display. To show the world our sex dreams in the flesh. Sure I know that when you were young you had hidden in your bedroom National Geographic magazines with pictures of bare breasted native women. And then after that in your teenage years you graduated to the fancy men's magazines or maybe in your small town you managed to score some porno playing cards. Then of course you were in the military and you still tell big stories about bad girls from that experience. Marriage followed, then divorce; and then some catch up time with girls. Yup, you're a real man. Done it all.

Well, not quite. It's tough sometimes to retrench mentally but this woman's job is to show you what you do not know, and what you have not done. You are not qualified to be toilet paper stuck to the bottom of her shoe. She knows it and you looking at her as she walks up the center of any soi in Pattaya would know it also. This is a different game, and a different woman, and a different level of sex. It is start over time for you Mr. Big Talk. This is sex you didn't dream of when you were looking at National Geographic pictures of dusky maidens with dirty feet and fleas. That is why she is using the sois as stages of display. The walk up the center of the soi is the maximum exposure, the biggest show; the performance she was put on earth to do. She is doing her job. She is fulfilling her destiny. She is sex.

Sweet Jesus on a cracker she is headed for this hotel. God give me the strength to breath, she is coming up the AA Hotel steps. I open the glass door and put my arm around her and start to walk her to the elevator. I know what I want, and I am not going to turn a gift from God down. But she twists out of my embrace and makes for the front desk. ID card time. Hookerville. That means she is here to meet someone.

Just then the elevator door opens and out comes Bill. Bill who I had chatted up in the Sportsman's Bar yesterday at breakfast. Bill who is from Australia and worked in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia for a US construction company building plywood forms for pouring concrete at the new airport in the 70's. I had done the same work at the same time for the DeFelice construction company out of Connecticut in the United States. So Bill and I had something in common. We were not equal but it was fun to make a connection. Then my new Sportsman's Bar breakfast friend Bill got hired on at Aramco in Saudia Arabia. I had entertained the idea in the 70's but wasn't man enough to make it happen. Like I said, Bill and I were not equal. Then the oil industry and Bill hooked up for good. They spent money on him and he never let them down. He became a global player with a file in Human Resources that had a cover stamp that said--WILL GO ANYWHERE ANYTIME. Never went back to England. Bill is about my age now and has had a life of well adjusted gypsy work, and a well adjusted gypsy personal life all over the world. Not for most. Worked for Bill. He does what he wants, and he gives his employer good service, and the rest is nobody's damn business. Living the life of a man.

Bill can see my misty eyes, and he can see his lady love at the front desk. "Sorry mate", he says: "Already taken. But you can ride up in the elevator with us if you want to get one more hungry dog look." I don't have to be asked twice. Three of us in the elevator. Two old dogs and a woman of such surpassing beauty, and ego dense sexuality that everyone can hear their hearts beating. Bill playfully pushes her towards me. Confident. He knows she won't leave oil rig money. She likes being offered up as sex bait. Mature people playing adult games.

I am staring at her without pride and without shame. Everyone doing their job. Bill making the process go forward, she filling the elevator cab with the Devil's temptation, and me worshiping like a dog staring at a meat wagon. Out of the elevator on the fifth floor and the three of us snake around the skylight that connects all the floors. At the maid's station I stand and stare as the woman in white and Bill go down the hall. She looks over her shoulder at me and smiles a kryptonite smile that would neuter Superman.

God bless trannies.

That's from Dana, this guy is a legend. He's also a complete madman, writing a book about thailand since a few years now.

Another one from him that i like :

Captain Pattaya here with an idea of such brilliance and such 'smack-your-hand-on-your-- forehead' obviousness that when I lay it out for you embarrassment will be your emotional state. No ploblum dude. Not many people are as smart as I am. Hey, don't worry about it. I am used to people smacking themselves on the forehead when they are around me.

But first a review. It is estimated by Thai government officials that from Soi 1 to Soi 16 and from Beach Road up to 3rd road in Pattaya that there are approximately 20,000 working girls. And we are not talking about maids. We are talking about the wonderful women that your father should have clued you in on and had you meet when you were eighteen years old. But he was married so a lot of important things did not get done. He wasn't getting any sex so screw you. People get mean.

Since there is little or no control over how people breed there are a lot of idiots in the world and invariably the fascist inclined wind up in charge of some part of your life. All of these people hate happy people and all of these people hate sex. So just as the Universe has a background radiation noise that is constant; Pattaya has a constant noise from these moralists and leaders and community activists and church people and family advocates. And that constant noise is that the wonderful women of Pattaya that will exchange sex for money should be somehow . . . well, something should be done.

I believe their secret wish is that all of these angels from heaven be sent to Antarctica to service penguins. Maybe that is why all of the penguins have been wearing tuxedos for the last 10,000 years--they have been waiting. Anyway, in the opinions of these fascists and moralists and little dick dweebs; the resulting Pattaya community between Beach Road and 3rd Road and Soi 1 to Soi 16 would be improved by the absence of these angels. One could sell Bibles door to door again without having to hear the banging and crashing and screaming and moaning and heaving and grunting and laughing and giggling of people inside doing something Biblical. Sex.

Well, I am nothing if not a modern man of conciliatory impulse and bone marrow reasonableness and diplomacy. Add my brain to this and you never know what will happen. So it follows as the night follows the day that compromise might just be the social solution that would make everyone happy. I have an idea . . . oh forget the word idea. This is an intellectual explosion of brilliance that makes a supernova look like popping a pimple. Prepare to rewrite all of the Great Men of the World books. Luckily I am humble.

Anyway, this social concept will make the seekers of sex happy and will also make the haters of sex happy. That's right--I am going to make every single person in Pattaya happy without increasing the tax base. Do I hear the birds chirping the word genius?

To wit: The community from Beach Road to 3rd Road and from Soi 1 to Soi 16 will have no obvious signs of sex commerce but the total amount of sexual opportunity will not diminish. Grab your baht bus Heinz and Sven and Manny and Todd--here it comes.

Sound of Trumpets . . .

I propose that all twenty thousand prostitutes in Pattaya be moved to the Beach Road boulevard between Sois 13/0 (opposite the AA Hotel) and Soi 13/3 (Pattayaland 1). It is a distance of about two hundred yards. So that works out to about 100 women per yard. Naturally with density such as this there would be some spillage and there would be women on the beach and maybe even standing in the water. Guys cruising with big elections should probably avoid negotiating with the water girls because we all know what cold water does to . . . well, you know what I am talking about. Anyway, there would be 20,000 girls in about 200 yards at a linear density of 100 girls per yard. If you add another 30,000 guys to this mix you are going to be having 50,000 sexually interested people in one place. 250 people per yard of boulevard. It's a good thing there is the beach and water for spillage (don't you love it when a plan comes together). Anyway, there will be interested private parts touching without calculation or forethought. Who wants to party?

Hell, all you would have to do would be to stand in one spot and you would have pale faced Chiang Mai wonders, and dark skinned Isaan minxes, and southern Thai Malays, and spooky Khymers, and incomprehensible Laotians rubbing against you. Works for me. Drop 100mg of Viagra and wander around with a tent stake sticking out. Honk if you love Asian culture. Honk if you love big elections.

The Bible people can simply avoid driving down Beach road and seeing happy human beings; and the sexually normal humans will have choice and convenience and happy vibes heretofore only imagined. Naturally I will be in charge of everything and I will accept my fee in trade (if you know what I mean). I will supervise from the 6th floor ocean facing suite in the AA Hotel and from the Starbucks Coffee 2nd floor outside terrace and from the mezzanine landing on the way up to Swenson's Ice Cream and from the steps of the Royal Garden Plaza.

There will be almost no rules of any kind. Women and guys can dress anyway they want. Ok, forget that. There will be some rules. The women will have to wear high heeled shoes. Now there are no more rules. Wait a minute, the guy thing needs some attention. No French, or mainland Chinese, or rich Koreans, or Japs, or Russians, or Eastern Europeans, or skinheads from Britain and Europe or Thais. I know what you are thinking--

"That's not a complete list Dana."

Yes, I know. There are some other religious-cultural party killers. Societies and people that do not treat others different than themselves with respect, and societies and individuals who do not treat women with dignity and respect. Don't worry. The girls will take care of that. All of the girls have been issued scissors and all of the girls have been issued monthly quotas they can't exceed. No worries mate.

Ok, that's it. Now it is party time. Hours for boardwalk liaisons will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. (we need four hours to clean up mystery meat sticks and eggshells from boiled eggs). No public misbehavior (it's a meeting place, not a performance venue), and no yelling and no arm waving (sorry Italians), and no displays of money, and no fighting and grabbing and groping, and no drunkenness (sorry rugby and soccer 'fans'). Although there will be 50,000 people in a two hundred yard strip of the boulevard that should not dilute the dignity of the gathering. It is all about love.

Ok, let's get away from the nitty gritty details and just imagine this guys. Every day of the year weather permitting there would be 20,000 Thai females of the happy bonking kind between Soi 13/0 and Soi 13/3. One hundred of them per yard. Any man who actually walked from Soi 13/0 opposite the AA Hotel to Soi 13/3 past the Royal Garden Plaza without falling in love would be instantaneously excommunicated because he was defective in some way. Active participants only. No neuters, gays, religious literature fools, backpackers, or farang women of any kind.

The above categories plus nationality and cultural group non-inclusions plus yelling and grabbing and groping and cigarette smoking and drinking and arm waving and fighting are some of the infractions, infringements and violations I'll be watching for from the various official vantage points like Swenson's and Starbucks and the AA Hotel and the steps of the Royal Garden Plaza.

Will I be incognito? No. I'll be extremely highly visible and addressed as Captain Pattaya. I'll be wearing the official Captain Pattaya uniform of elephant decorated beach pants, Indian cotton shirt, black foam Nike sandals, silver jewellery, cell phone, binoculars, laptop, head mounted antenna, megaphone, handcuffs, stun gun, mace, pepper spray (works on foreigners only--Thais actually like it), baton, ticket book (yes you can get ticketed for infractions--it's not anarchy), official badge on chain around my neck, rules handout forms, aviator sunglasses of the military kind, sun umbrella, pith helmut, clipboard, and big pen. I'll also have a backpack with emergency items for the girls such as cell phone batteries, condoms, tampons, and makeup mirrors. Ok, I can't run in this outfit (the head mounted antenna is a bitch) but there will be other deputized Danas working the crowd.

People think my job being in charge of this whole thing will be nothing but clear blue skies and slavish hero worship. Who are you kidding? When is the last time you were in charge of 20,000 of the world's most beautiful and most promiscuous women? In fact, not to put too fine a point on it; when was the last time you were actually in charge of one woman? It won't be easy for me but sacrifice for the team is practically my middle name. Selfless giving is my natural instinct. I've been giving to the girls of Pattaya for years and I intend to keep right on giving. Right living produces good karma and that is its own reward. Or something.

Actually, I would rather have cheese as a reward but I digress. At any rate, I'm in charge of everything which is why big ass midgets in short pleated skirts and big bulge trannies in clear plastic heels will be encouraged. It's a party. Get with the program. If you haven't had Wan the door girl from the Hollywood Strip bar and a rolling eyeball transvestite from the Obsessions bar and an anxious-to-please midget from the first floor NEP Lollipops bar in your hotel room at the same time--well, then . . . ok, I'm not a storyteller. You'll just have to imagine. Whether it is Bangkok or Pattaya you either know what a party is or you don't. With this new social program and geographical change we are going to ratchet up the P for Party in Pattaya. Get with the program.

Anyway I am not a Himalayan cave mendicant but a highly socialized animal not immune to the charms of public recognition. I predict that as this idea becomes a social success for the greater Pattaya community that I will become recognized by the Bible readers, and moralists, and fascists, and family value people, and community standards advocates (yawn), and given various kinds of awards and things. I love receiving awards and accolades and cutting ribbons and holding up plaques and trophies and posing for photographers because there is usually some kind of cheese around at these events. I love cheese. (Hint: If you put your medications in cheese you do not get that bitter taste.)

Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if the mayor of Pattaya recognised me for my public contributions at a function where the centrepiece was a life-size bargirl carved from a giant piece of cheese. You could take a som tam spoon and scoop some mozzarella right out of her crotch. Just thinking. Cheese dips and cheese on toothpicks and slices of cheese and cubes of cheese. Cheese nipples maybe. Love cheese.

In the psychiatric treatment facility in Boston (diagnosis: 'Pattaya Possessed with Delusions of Grandeur') the nurses used to tape oven mitts to our wrists at night so that we wouldn't touch ourselves. Attempts at self-love were still possible but the fine motor skills were gone. A little like trying to put a worm on a hook wearing boxing gloves. Theoretically possible but hardly worth the effort. Oven mitts taped to your wrists and loving don't go together. It was kind of a bummer. But during the daytime there was always lots of thirty year old surplus government cheese in the recreation room. You could eat it until you got so stopped up they had to use the rectum apple corer to get you going again, or you could carve a huge chunk of it in the shape of a transvestite and wander the halls with a cheese tranny in your pants. So it was oven mitts at night--kind of a bummer; and cheese by day--simply fabulous. Kind of a ying and yang thing. Life works out. Love cheese.

Anyway, I predict public recognition from the Pattaya Municipal government and the World Council of Churches for my forward thinking social solution to the Pattaya Prostitute Problem (PPP). I also predict that an orgasm in Pattaya will become known as a Dana.

aptain Pattaya here beaming this question out to you worldwide through my head mounted antenna from the steps of the Royal Garden Plaza: Who thinks this whole thing is a great idea?

Who wants me to carve a cheese tranny for them? I'll meet you on the boardwalk between Soi 13/0 (opposite the AA Hotel) and Soi 13/3 (Pattayaland 1). Twenty thousand women will be there. And they won't be selling prawns or sunhats. Big elections? No ploblum. Don't speak Thai? No ploblum. Electric shock burns on your balls? No ploblum. You like to tie girls to the bed and lick their feet? No ploblum. You like to walk around with a cheese tranny in your pants? No ploblum.

Psychiatric ward oven mitts taped to your wrists? That's a ploblum. Oven mitts and loving don't go together. No oven mitts allowed.

iPoker works. Party is blocked by Party. I don't know what network Betfair is on, but it works in Laos, so I assume it would work in Thailand. I think Moneybookers is the best ewallet available.

PARTY: I played at party when I was in patong earlier this year(march). It worked then but it lagged. Then I heared it was blocked in pattaya, thats why I added the 'where they work' part. But I would trust teabag and not go down there with any money on your account.

ONGAME: I couldent logg on, the tables dident appear(betsson). According to the support on a smaller skin the website should be blocked but you should have access to the tables. This is the opposite of what i experienced.

FTP: Their clients where everywhere on the cafes.

It can be almost impossible at times to find a usable internet connection at public places. Assuming you have a laptop, you can get a reliable connection at Joma (Vientiane's version of Starbucks) but you have to pay roughly $2/hr. This is 4-5x what you would pay in an internet cafe. If I'm still here in '08, you can play at my house in exchange for some beer or coaching if you play higher than I do.

There are plenty of buses and inexpensive flights between the major areas of Laos. The country is a lot more spread out than Thailand.
