The term dealer has two meanings in poker:

  1. The player who has the dealer button in front of them and is therefore the nominal dealer, who acts last in certain games with a predetermined order of action such as hold 'em. See the Button article for more discussion of this dealer.
  2. The casino employee who in addition to distributing the cards keeps the game running and acts as a first-level referee. This dealer is the subject of this article.

You can see the relationship between the two functions in home games, where the players take turns dealing the cards on their button hands.
