Aladdin

Elvis and Priscilla got married at the old Aladdin Hotel, but soon the venerable name will disappear from the Vegas strip when it becomes "Planet Hollywood" in 2006. The chips and the signage never let you forget that. Construction is heavy currently.

The poker tables, as of this writing (November 2006) have been moved to the mezzanine while the casino undergoes a remodel. According to the staff, the plan will be to move the room back to its own space when the work is all finished. This new space is reportedly near the sports book.

The games being offered during my visits were the typical Las Vegas fare of 3/6 and 1/2 ($200) max no-limit hold-em. I saw no stud or Omaha, but they do hold regular low buy-in tournaments. One of the high-hand jackpots was hit, quad 3s, at my table and the winner received $190 for it. They give jackpots to any quads or straight flush. The amounts paid vary according to a big board at the front of the room. Once a jackpot is paid it starts over at $50 with the maximum payout being $599.

The dealers are generally competent and quick. The auto-shufflers have been removed from the tables in this temporary space. We should see them return when the room moves to its permanent home.

The cocktail service is excellent. There is some smoke wafting into the poker area. The brush will sell you chips and dealers keep their own tips. You cash out at the podium where you initially talked to the brush.

The waits are generally pretty short as they are quick to start new games when possible. I do recommend you pay attention to where you stand on the list, however. At one point I was first on the list for 3/6; players started walking in and getting immediately seated at a table. I enquired with the brush if he was starting a new 3/6 and when he said yes, I had to remind him I was first on the list. So, pay attention.

The Aladdin room is a nice little place and one of my favorites on the Las Vegas Strip.
